Sensing, Feeling, and Regulating: Investigating the Association of Focal Brain Damage with Voluntary Respiratory and Motor Control.

UNLABELLED: Breathing is a complex, vital function that can be modulated to influence physical and mental well-being. However, the role of cortical and subcortical brain regions in voluntary control of human respiration is underexplored. Here we investigated the influence of damage to human frontal, temporal, or limbic regions on the sensation and regulation of breathing patterns. Participants performed a respiratory regulation task across regular and irregular frequencies ranging from 6 to 60 breaths per minute (bpm), with a counterbalanced hand motor control task. Interoceptive and affective

Endovascular exclusion of superior mesenteric artery pseudoaneurysms: an alternative to open laparotomy in high-risk patients.

Over 100 free-ranging adult California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) and one Northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus), predominantly adult females, were intoxicated by domoic acid (DA) during three harmful algal blooms between 1998 and 2000 in central and northern California coastal waters. The vector prey item was Northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) and the primary DA-producing algal diatom was Psuedonitzschia australis. Postmortem examination revealed gross and histologic findings that were distinctive and aided in diagnosis. A total of 109 sea lions were examined, dying between 1 day an

[Following sensory neuropathy, anti-Hu antibody-positive paraneoplastic neurological syndrome presenting with limbic encephalitis occurs after complete remission].

Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis is a rare neurological disorder that frequently precedes the detection of malignancy. We report the case of a 68-year-old male with small-cell lung cancer who developed paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis associated with presence of the anti-Hu antibody, after achieving complete remission of the tumor by chemotherapy. The patient visited our hospital because of progressive sensory disturbance of the distal extremities at 65 years of age. Though paraneoplastic sensory neuropathy was suspected, we could not find any tumor and he did not improve with steroids or

SOBP is mutated in syndromic and nonsyndromic intellectual disability and is highly expressed in the brain limbic system.

Intellectual disability (ID) affects 1%-3% of the general population. We recently reported on a family with autosomal-recessive mental retardation with anterior maxillary protrusion and strabismus (MRAMS) syndrome. One of the reported patients with ID did not have dysmorphic features but did have temporal lobe epilepsy and psychosis. We report on the identification of a truncating mutation in the SOBP that is responsible for causing both syndromic and nonsyndromic ID in the same family. The protein encoded by the SOBP, sine oculis binding protein ortholog, is a nuclear zinc finger protein. In

The effect of post-labeling delay on cerebral blood flow is influenced by age and sex: a study based on arterial spin-labeling magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Whether the effect of post-labeling delay (PLD) on cerebral blood flow (CBF) is influenced by age and sex in adults is unknown. … ver, the CBF decreased for 12 to 17 mL/100 g/min as the PLD increased per 1 second in the bilateral limbic lobes, insula, and deep gray matter. In these regions, the speed of the changes for CBF increased for 0.2 to 0.28 mL/100 g/min/s as the age increased per 1 year. Furthermore, compared to the female, the speed of the changes for CBF decreased for 3.58 to …

Diagnostic utility of plasma p-tau217 differs by Alzheimer's disease tau-based subtypes.

INTRODUCTION: Blood-based biomarkers, most notably plasma phosphorylated tau (p-tau)217, have transformed the diagnostic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: We applied an unsupervised machine learning approach to tau positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in 606 participants (age 73.95 ± 7.72; 309 female) to identify AD subtypes. Within each subtype, we evaluated plasma p-tau217 levels, their association with regional tau PET uptake, differences between cognitively unimpaired (CU) and cognitively impaired (CI) individuals, and relationships to cognitive performance. RESULTS:

Region-resolved proteomic map of the human brain: functional interconnections and neurological implications.

While progress has been made in transcriptomic profiling of the human brain, functional characterization of brain regions and their interactions on the basis of regional protein expression remains limited. Here, we constructed a proteomic map from thirteen anatomical brain regions of eight cadaver donors to elucidate region-specific protein expression patterns and their implications for brain function. The results underscore the interconnectivity of the four cerebral lobes, suggesting facilitated information integration through large-scale neural networks. We propose a three-module framework (

[A case of normal pressure hydrocephalus with orthostatic hypotension].

A 67-year-old male case of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) after subarachnoid hemorrhage with orthostatic hypotension is reported. He was admitted with gait disturbance two months after a V-P shunt procedure for NPH. Because of shunt malfunction, a triad of clinical symptoms of NPH (dementia, gait disturbance and urinary incontinence) appeared and orthostatic hypotension developed. These conditions gradually worsened. After a reshunting procedure, the triad of NPH symptoms diminished and orthostatic hypotension disappeared. The same etiology that induced NPH symptoms was suspected in this

Depth electroencephalography in selection of refractory epilepsy for surgery. Our experience with the suboccipital approach.

Despite new diagnostic tools, the precise localisation of an epileptic focal discharge remains an important step in the surgical treatment of epilepsy. Conventional EEG not always gives enough information to decide about surgery and more invasive methods have to be used. Epidural, subdural, and intra-parenchymatous electrodes have been used to come closer to the epileptic foci. Superficial hemispheric foci are well recorded by conventional epidural or subdural, strip or grid electrodes. Deeper foci, located in the medial temporal lobe or limbic areas are much more difficult to access from surf

Is the immobility of advanced dementia a form of lorazepam-responsive catatonia?

Patients with end-stage dementia typically are very immobilized. Could this state actually be a form of lorazepam-responsive catatonia? Catatonia has been documented following cerebrovascular accidents, head injury, HIV encephalitis, brain tumors, and multiple sclerosis. Identified anatomical substrates include frontal lobes, parietal lobes, limbic system, diencephalon, and basal ganglia. Given that Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, corticobasal degeneration, frontotemporal dementia, and Parkinsonian dementia often have degeneration in some of the same areas, dramatic

Case report: Bridging limbic network epilepsy with psychiatric, memory, and sleep comorbidities: case illustrations of reversible psychosis symptoms during continuous, high-frequency ANT-DBS.

The network nature of focal epilepsy is exemplified by mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE), characterized by focal seizures originating from the mesial temporal neocortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. The mTLE network hypothesis is evident in seizure semiology and interictal comorbidities, both reflecting limbic network dysfunction. The network generating seizures also supports essential physiological functions, including memory, emotion, mood, and sleep. Pathology in the mTLE network often manifests as interictal behavioral disturbances and seizures. The limbic circuit is a vital network, and

Practical microscopic neuroanatomy of the limbic system and basal forebrain identifiable on clinical 3T MRI.

Microscopic neuroanatomy of limbic system and basal forebrain on MRI is complex and is a terra incognita for many radiologists, clinicians, and neuroscientists. Interestingly, most of the important structures/at least anatomical regions containing these structures demonstrable on cadaveric and surgical dissections can be identified on clinical MRI, with 3T being much better than 1.5T. This article teaches the practical MRI identification of these structures which will greatly help in evaluating complex ailments like temporal lobe epilepsy, Alzheimer dementia, and other neuropsychiatric disorde

Double dissociation of memory capacities after bilateral occipital-lobe or medial temporal-lobe lesions.

Memory for recently encountered information can be reflected in conscious recall and recognition of that material, or in facilitated reprocessing of that material, an effect known as repetition priming. Repetition priming may be perceptual (form-based) or conceptual (meaning-based). A patient with bilateral occipital-lobe lesions (L.H.) and a patient with bilateral medial-temporal lobe lesions (H.M.) showed a double dissociation between visuoperceptual priming (impaired in L.H. and intact in H.M.) and visual recognition memory (intact in L.H. and impaired in H.M.). L.H. showed intact conceptua

Neural Response to Low Energy and High Energy Foods in Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder: A Functional MRI Study.

OBJECTIVE: Bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) are eating disorders (EDs) characterized by recurrent binge eating (BE) episodes. Overlap exists between ED diagnostic groups, with BE episodes presenting one clinical feature that occurs transdiagnostically. Neuroimaging of the responses of those with BN and BED to disorder-specific stimuli, such as food, is not extensively investigated. Furthermore, to our knowledge, there have been no previous published studies examining the neural response of individuals currently experiencing binge eating, to low energy foods. Our objective w

Epilepsy-related cytoarchitectonic abnormalities along white matter pathways.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is one of the most common forms of epilepsy. Unfortunately, the clinical outcomes of TLE cannot be determined based only on current diagnostic modalities. A better understanding of white matter (WM) connectivity changes in TLE may aid the identification of network abnormalities associated with TLE and the phenotypic characterisation of the disease. METHODS: We implemented a novel approach for characterising microstructural changes along WM pathways using diffusional kurtosis imaging (DKI). Along-the-tract measures were compared for 32 subjects with left

CRH receptor antagonism reverses the effect of social subordination upon central GABAA receptor binding in estradiol-treated ovariectomized female rhesus monkeys.

Persistent exposure to environmental stressors causes dysregulation of the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis and alters GABAA receptor (GABAAR) levels throughout the brain. Social subordination in socially housed female rhesus results in distinctive stress-related physiological and behavioral phenotypes that are dependent on the ovarian hormone estradiol (E2). In the present study, we utilized ovariectomized adult female rhesus monkeys undergoing hormone replacement with E2 to test the hypothesis that the chronic psychosocial stress of subordination alters GABAAR binding potent
