Solitary fibrous tumors of the skin: a clinicopathologic study of 10 cases and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a relatively uncommon neoplasm that most commonly arises in the pleura. However, SFT is now known to affect various other anatomic sites as well, including rare examples in the skin, where the histologic features of this lesion may create diagnostic confusion with a variety of other spindle-cell tumors. In order to further the characterization of cutaneous SFT, all available cases of that entity were retrieved from the authors' institutional files. Immunohistochemical analysis for CD-34, CD-99, vimentin, bcl-2, factor XIIIa, S100 protein, smooth muscle actin, pa

Cutaneous mast cell tumors in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus).

Seven cutaneous mast cell tumors were identified in 6 geriatric California sea lions (Zalophus californianus). All tumors were within the dermis and grossly appeared as single, or in one case two, less than 1-cm-diameter, well-circumscribed, raised nodules. The majority (6/7) of the neoplasms occurred near mucocutaneous junctions (eyelid, lip, or anus). The mast cell tumors were composed of round cells arranged in sheets with poorly granulated cytoplasm or an absence of cytoplasmic granules in routine hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections. Cytology (n = 1) showed adequate staining of mast cel

Calreticulin mutations affect its chaperone function and perturb the glycoproteome.

Calreticulin (CALR) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-retained chaperone that assists glycoproteins in obtaining their structure. CALR mutations occur in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), and the ER retention of CALR mutants (CALR MUT) is reduced due to a lacking KDEL sequence. Here, we investigate the impact of CALR mutations on protein structure and protein levels in MPNs by subjecting primary patient samples and CALR-mutated cell lines to limited proteolysis-coupled mass spectrometry (LiP-MS). Especially glycoproteins are differentially expressed and undergo profound structu

SMARCB1 (INI-1) and NUT immunoexpression in a large series of head and neck carcinomas in a Brazilian reference center.

BACKGROUND: SMARCB1 (INI-1)-deficient carcinomas and NUT carcinomas are aggressive neoplasms, often affecting the sinonasal region. Not uncommonly, their diagnoses are made retrospectively. METHODS: Through SMARCB1 (INI-1) and NUT immunomarkers, 643 head and neck carcinomas were assessed retrospectively. Moreover, SMARCB1 (INI-1)-deficient and NUT carcinomas were additionally evaluated by immunohistochemistry, as well as in situ hybridization analysis for HPV and EBV. RESULTS: Four SMARCB1 (INI-1)-deficient carcinomas (located in lower lip, soft palate, hypopharynx and vocal cord, this latte

Warthin's tumor at the Brazilian National Cancer Institute: additional evidence of homogeneous sex prevalence and association with other neoplasms.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To report the largest Brazilian series of Warthin's tumor (WT). PROCEDURES: The medical files of 76 patients with WT treated in the Brazilian National Cancer Institute from 1996 to 2006 were reviewed. RESULTS: The male:female ratio was 2:1, with a predominance of white, old, and smoking patients. However, there were more women among the nonsmokers. One fifth of the patients presented with synchronous multiple lesions. Parotid lesions were prevalent, but there were patients with lesions in cervical lymph nodes and in the inferior lip. Most cases were treated by superfici

Selective use of radiation therapy for neoplasms of the skin.

Radiation therapy is preferable treatment for a minority of basal cell and epidermoid carcinomas of the skin. Proper use exploits the inherent advantage of preservation of function and cosmesis. Therefore, many cancers involving the eyelid, canthus, nose, nasolabial fold, pinna, ear canal, vermilion surface of the lower lip and skin of the chin can be advantageously treated by radiation therapy as compared to surgery, if pretreatment destruction of normal tissue is minimal. Although irradiation is equally effective, surgery is more expeditious for small lesions and cancers at other sites, whic

The cost of oral cancer: A systematic review.

Although clinical and epidemiological aspects of oral cancers (OC) are well-documented in the literature, there is a lack of evidence on the economic burden of OC. This study aims to provide a comprehensive systematic assessment on the economic burden of OC based on available evidence worldwide. A systematic review was conducted. The population was any individual, who were exposed to OC, considered here as lip (LC), oral cavity (OCC), or oropharynx (OPC) cancer. The outcome was information on direct (medical and non-medical) and indirect (productivity loss and early death) costs. The data sour

Cornu Cutaneum: Case Reports of Patients With a Cutaneous Horn Associated With Either a Verruca Vulgaris or an Inverted Follicular Keratosis and a Review of the Etiologies of Cutaneous Horns.

A cutaneous horn, referred to as a cornu cutaneum in Latin, presents as a mound of keratinizing epithelium. The etiology of the cutaneous horn is associated with the lesion at its base. In addition to numerous benign and malignant neoplasms, cutaneous horns may be related to infections and skin conditions. The features of a 22-year-old woman with a cutaneous horn associated with a recalcitrant verruca vulgaris on her left fifth toe are described. In addition, the characteristics of a 57-year-old man with an inverted follicular keratosis-related cutaneous horn on his upper lip are reported. Functional and Aesthetic Lower Lip Reconstruction Using the Yotsuyanagy Flap.

Lower lip defects are a major challenge from a reconstructive perspective. The lower lip is an anatomical region formed by different types of tissue, and it is essential to obtain adequate functional and aesthetic results. When local tissue is available to be a donor area, it becomes the best option to repair the defect. This article's purpose is to present our experience in reconstruction of partial or transfixing total defects of the lower lip with the musculocutaneous flap of the depressor anguli oris described by Yotsuyanagi.

NEOPLASIA AND PROLIFERATIVE LESIONS IN FREE-RANGING MOUNTAIN AND GRAUER'S GORILLAS (GORILLA BERINGEI).

There are no published data on the occurrence of neoplasia in wild great apes of any species. The aim of this study was to utilize postmortem and histopathology reports collected from wild human-habituated mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) and Grauer's gorillas (Gorilla beringei graueri) to determine both the incidence and types of spontaneous neoplasms and proliferative lesions that occur in these species. Pathology records of 194 mountain gorillas and 12 Grauer's gorillas necropsied from 1985 to 2020 were examined for all cases of neoplasia or hyperplastic/proliferative disease.

[Submental artery island flaps for reconstruction in the head and neck region].

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of defects after extirpation of head and neck neoplasms is a highly challenging and complex surgical undertaking. Commonly used techniques, such as the radial forearm flap or anterior lateral thigh flap, have numerous disadvantages, e.g., donor-site morbidity, poor color match for cutaneous reconstruction, and excessive tissue bulk for intraoral reconstruction. Use of a submental artery island flap is a relatively new and increasingly performed option for reconstruction in the head and neck region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From March 2013 to August 2015, 12 patients w

Minor salivary gland tumors: A clinicopathological study of 18 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Minor salivary gland tumors (MSGTs) are infrequent, representing 10-15% of all salivary neoplasms. Despite this low frequency, MSGTs conform a heterogeneous group of neoplasms characterized by a broad range of histological types. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We identified cases of MSGT in a retrospective study of the biopsies made in the period 1997-2007 in the Service of Oral Surgery (Dental Clinic of the University of Barcelona, Spain). The data collected comprised patient age and sex, the clinical characteristics and location of the tumor, the duration of the lesion, its size, the tr

Median cleft of the upper lip associated with a mass: a rare case.

Median cleft lip is a midline vertical cleft through the upper lip. This is a very rare anomaly described in the literature. Median cleft lip is caused by the failure of fusion of the medial nasal prominences. In this case report, a 4-month-old boy with a median cleft associated with a mass of the upper lip is presented. The patient has no other anomalies of the nose or alveolus. The patient has normotelorism. A Z-plasty technique was used on the skin of the base of the columella. A vertical excision of the cleft with muscle approximation was performed on the white roll and the wet-dry border

Dermatoscopy of an invasive melanoma on the upper lip shows possible association with Laugier-Hunziker syndrome.

We report mucosal melanoma of the upper lip in a patient affected by the Laugier-Hunziker disease. Using dermatoscopy, two distinct parts were identified in the same mucosal area: nodular (malignant) and macular (benign). A complete surgical excision was performed and the patient has been free of disease for 16 months.

NHL - Extranodal T-cell lymphoma.

Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKL) is a rare lymphoid neoplasm that in the past has been grouped with a variety of granulomatous diseases. ENKL occurs in all age groups. However, it seems to occur more often in people in their 50s and affects more men than women. It is strongly linked to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), especially in people of Asian countries. Because this type of lymphoma occurs in organs or tissues other than lymph nodes, it is called ENKL. This is a case report of a 25-year-old female patient who presented with a nonhealing ulcer at the right nasal ala involving

Alimentary-tract ganglioneuromatosis. A major component of the syndrome of multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2b.

Although the syndrome of multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2b, is known to comprise mucosal ganglioneuromatosis, medullary thyroid carcinoma, pheochromocytoma and skeletal anomalies, we wish to document the importance of the alimentary-tract components. In nine patients with this syndrome, we found diffuse ganglioneurmatosis extending from the lips to the rectum. Alimentary symptoms, constipation or diarrhea or both were present in six of these patients. Similar symptoms were present in six of seven other affected patients from whom alimentary-tract tissue was not obtained. Five of the 16 pat
