A case of chondroid lipoma located in the submandibular region of a 21-year-old man is presented. On macroscopic evaluation the tumor was lobulated and quite yellow. Microscopic examination showed that this tumor was composed of mature adipose tissue and eosinophilic cells. The eosinophilic cells displayed single or multiple vacuoles and resembled lipoblast or hibernoma-like cells. These were set in a myxoid or chondromyxoid stroma. Most cells reacted with antibodies directed against vimentin and neuron-specific enolase. Focal weak positivity for S-100 protein was noted. Principal consideratio

Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord is rare and is usually discovered during hernia repair operation. We report a 71-year-old patient with spermatic cord liposarcoma. The patient presented with a painless mass in the left scrotum measuring up to 25 cm. The mass had gradually been enlarging during the last 6 months. Clinical examination suggested inguinal hernia and after a routine clinical check-up the patient underwent surgery. During surgery, a large, yellow, lobulated mass adherent to spermatic cord was found. The mass was not spreading to the retroperitoneum, epididymis or testis. Simple orc

Liposarcoma is a soft tissue neoplasm that commonly develops in the lower extremities and rarely in the head and neck region. Herein, we report the case of a patient with primary liposarcoma that was detected in the mastoid antrum during staged tympanoplasty for cholesteatoma. The tumor adjacent to the attic cholesteatoma was resected completely, and the pathological diagnosis was that of myxoid-type liposarcoma. Because positron emission tomography after the surgery showed no signs of tumor remnants or systemic metastasis, a second-stage surgery was performed 8 months after the first surgery.

There are more than 50 subtypes of soft tissue sarcomas, among which 30% are associated with specific genetic alterations, including translocations. Several studies have reported associations between cancer risk and polymorphisms of DNA repair genes from the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway. NER involves more than 20 proteins whose inactivation leads to xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) or cockayne syndrome (CS), among which XPD, a helicase allowing DNA strand excision by the endonuclease XPG. DNA from 93 patients with synovial sarcomas, myxoid liposarcomas, dermatofibrosarcomas protuberans (

Topoisomerase-II alpha (Topo-II alpha) is known as a cell cycle-related intranuclear marker. To the best of our knowledge, the expression of Topo-II alpha on extranuclear sites has not been reported. The aim of the present study was to determine the usefulness of Topo-II alpha immunostaining for detecting the lipoblasts that are essential to diagnosing liposarcoma. Surgical specimens, including benign lipomatous tumors (four cases), well-differentiated liposarcomas (three cases), myxoid liposarcomas (six cases), pleomorphic liposarcomas (two cases), dedifferentiated liposarcomas (two cases), m

Liposarcoma is very rare mesenchymal tumor that occurs in deep soft tissue and mostly seen in limbs and retroperitoneum, accounts for 24% of extremity and 45% of retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcomas. Retroperitoneal liposarcomas are typically present with advanced disease and often carry a poor prognosis. Retroperitoneal liposarcomas grow slowly in the very expandable retroperitoneal space in the deeply hidden and clinically silent therefore diagnosis is usually made late. Liposarcomas have five histological subtypes; well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLS), dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLS),

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of liposarcoma of the spermatic cord in a young male, with special reference to the difficulties encountered in making the clinical and histopathological differential diagnosis.
METHODS/RESULTS: A 43-year-old patient underwent surgery for a tumor (8 x 7 cms) in the left spermatic cord. Pathological analysis demonstrated a well-differentiated liposarcoma with myxoid areas. Radical orchidectomy was performed. The patient is well, with no tumor recurrence or metastasis.
RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Paratesticular liposarcoma is rare. It is therefore difficult to establish th

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare tumor with an incidence of 2.5 per million individuals. Early diagnosis is difficult as there is an absence of specific clinical presentations. The present case study reports a patient diagnosed with retroperitoneal liposarcoma who was treated by complete surgical resection and relapsed 3 months following the surgery. In addition, the clinical data of 14 patients with retroperitoneal liposarcoma were reviewed and analyzed. The mean age of the 14 patients at presentation was 54.1 (range, 36-73 years) and 5/14 patients experienced recurrence, ranging between

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma that has unusual ultrastructural and molecular features. However, unlike other soft tissue sarcomas, it does not have specific clinical symptoms or radiological features, which can make its diagnosis difficult. Nevertheless, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma has a rare gene fusion (EWSR1-NR4A3) that is useful for making a differential diagnosis.

The purpose of this study was to obtain further information regarding cellular differentiation and proliferative characteristics of dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDL) arising in the retroperitoneum and mesentery for accurate diagnosis and prognostic criteria. The patients included 20 men and 12 women, mean age, 60 years (range, 33 to 80 years). Twenty-seven tumors were located in the retroperitoneum and 5 in the mesentery. Tumor size ranged from 9 to 51 cm (mean, 24 cm). Follow-up was available on all patients and ranged from 4 to 243 months (mean, 64 months). Twenty-four (75%) patients develo

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Myxoid liposarcoma is not an uncommon form of sarcoma. However, it usually affects the lower extremity long bones. Scapular involvement is extremely rare, as is a metastasis to the parasellar region. We present a case of liposarcoma of the skull base originating in the scapular region and metastasizing to the sellar and parasellar regions and provide a review of the pertinent literature.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old female patient diagnosed with left scapular myxoid liposarcoma was treated with surgical resection. She had clear resection margins and was trea

PURPOSE: To assess the role of CT in diagnosing and characterizing gastric fatty tumors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed the CT scans of 16 patients (8 men, 8 women, mean age 52 years) with gastric fatty tumors (11 lipomas, 3 liposarcomas, 1 angiolipoma, 1 teratoma) examined from 1990 to 1999. The differential diagnosis considered primary and secondary lipomatosis, carcinoma engulfing the perivisceral fat and thus mimicking a liposarcoma, mesenchymal gastric and primary peritoneal tumors.
RESULTS: Lipomas involved the fundus (7/11), the body (3/11), the antrum (1/11). Multifocality was fou

Between 1977 and 1992 four patients with liposarcomas of the head and neck region were treated and regularly reexamined at the ENT department of the University of Tubingen. Our patients were aged 19, 64, 66, and 73 years at primary diagnosis. Three patients were female and one was male. The tumors were located in cheek/parotid gland, the neck, the tracheoesophageal region and larynx/hypopharynx. In three patients complete primary resection was planned. In three cases further surgery was necessary due to recurrences. Two patients are free of tumor for seven and nine years, respectively. One pat

Laryngeal and hypopharyngeal liposarcomas were studied in seven men and one woman. Patient age ranged from 25 to 81 years, with a median of 64 years. Symptoms included dysphagia, airway obstruction, and the sensation of a foreign body in the back of the throat. Histologically, seven of the tumors were of the biologically favorable types, either representing well-differentiated (lipoma-like) liposarcomas or myxoid liposarcomas. One tumor was a pleomorphic liposarcoma. Six of the eight patients had one or more episodes of recurrent tumor. Surgery is the treatment of choice and can include conser

A patient with an intramuscular lipoma (infiltrating lipoma) located within the tongue is presented. There is only one previously reported case of an intramuscular lipoma located within the oral cavity. Because of its infiltrating nature, this tumor may be mistaken for a liposarcoma. Here, as in other sites, the important characteristics serving to distinguish an infiltrating lipoma from a liposarcoma are the absence of lipoblastic proliferation, myxoid differentiation, cellular pleomorphism, increased vascularity, and mitotic activity. Achievement of adequate surgical margins is essential, as

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The therapeutic armamentarium of adult soft-tissue sarcomas (STS) has widened in recent years. This was also due to increased consideration of their variegated histology. Trabectedin is a new chemotherapeutic agent, which significantly strengthens the armamentarium along this direction.
RECENT FINDINGS: Trabectedin has proven efficacy in STS, mainly in leiomyosarcomas, liposarcomas, and other translocation-related sarcomas. Among further subgroups, its activity in uterine leiomyosarcomas is noteworthy. Moreover, it exerts special antitumor activity in myxoid liposarcomas, w

A 54-year-old man presented with pollakiuria and dysuria. Ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a retroperitoneal tumor 10 cm in diameter. Pathological examination of a transrectal biopsy specimen obtained from the patient revealed the presence of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT). The patient underwent surgical resection of the tumor. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of 3 parts : the largest part was compatible with an inflammatory pseudotumor: the second part, well-differentiated liposarcoma: and the third part, a myxoid l

The liposarcoma is mainly located in the retroperitoneum and rarely involves the spermatic cord. Dissemination occurs more often via haematogenous way than by lymphatic way. The incidence of local recurrence is higher than distant metastases. The treatment of choice is the wide excision. Adjuvant radiotherapy is recommended in the well differentiated and myxoid type of tumors if the local control during excision is not complete or wide enough. Benefit of chemotherapy is still controversial and limited. Case report of a stage 1 liposarcoma of the spermatic cord, four years after excision of a l

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare but distinct entity with special clinicopathological, immunohistochemical, cytogenetical and outcome features. This tumor developed from soft tissues. A few cases have been reported in the head and neck in the literature. We report two new cases of extraskeletal myxoid chrondrosarcoma presenting in such an unusual site: one involved the left nasal cavity of a 67-year-old man and the second the sphenoidal sinus of a 71-year-old woman. The microscopic examination revealed nests of round small cells dispersed in a myxoid stroma. The myxoid material wa

BACKGROUND: Liposarcoma of the head and neck region represents approximately 1% of head and neck sarcomas. Therefore, there are few data on the natural history, presentation, treatment, and prognosis of this neoplasm.
METHODS: This study is a report of data from 76 patients with head and neck liposarcoma of whom 4 were treated at The Royal Marsden Hospital during the past 50 years.
RESULTS: The median age of patient presentation was the seventh decade (range, 6 months-86 years), and 65% of the patients were male. The commonest site of presentation was the neck (28%), followed by the larynx (
