Mental health and educational support strategies for students with learning disabilities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Learning disabilities limit students' participation in education and pose restrictions on their daily functioning, as they are often excluded from mainstream schools and lack adequate support due to stigmatization, poor inclusive teaching resources, and limited trained special educators. This narrative review aims to examine the relationship between mental health and educational support strategies for students with learning disabilities in Sub-Saharan Africa. For this review, a literature search was conducted using databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, alongside organizationa

"Please listen, it's my turn": instructional approaches, curricula and contexts for supporting communication and increasing access to inclusion.

BACKGROUND: Four elementary (primary) school students with severe speech and physical impairments (SSPI) who used augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) aids were selected to take part in an intensive, 4-week summer intervention program. The program was designed to explore effective approaches, content and contexts for supporting communication (including oral language, literacy, and technology skills) among young people who require AAC. METHOD: Features of the intervention included (i) using an integrated approach to provide language and literacy opportunities intended to elicit the

Economic costs and health utility values associated with extremely preterm birth: Evidence from the EPICure2 cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is associated with adverse health and developmental sequelae that impose a burden on finite resources and significant challenges for individuals, families and societies. OBJECTIVES: To estimate economic outcomes at age 11 associated with extremely preterm birth using evidence from a whole population study (EPICure2 study). METHODS: The study population comprised a sample of children born at ≤26 completed weeks of gestation during 2006 in England (n = 200) and a comparison group of classmates born at term (n = 143). Societal costs were estimated using parent and teac

Mainstreaming Sure Start speech and language therapy services.

Mainstreaming is the process of transferring policy, activity or good practice from a community-based initiative, such as Sure Start, into the core service. This paper will explain how one Sure Start programme developed a strategy for speech and language therapy (S&LT) that had an impact on the development of mainstream S&LT provision. The strategy explained here has shown the potential for team working and multi-agency delivery of new services. The new service was based on quality standard setting (as highlighted in government policy); positive multi-agency working based on sharing and skill

American Sign Language Interpreters in Public Schools: An Illusion of Inclusion that Perpetuates Language Deprivation.

PURPOSE: Many deaf children have limited access to language, spoken or signed, during early childhood - which has damaging effects on many aspects of development. There has been a recent shift to consider deafness and language deprivation as separate but related conditions. As such, educational plans should differentiate between services related to deafness and services related to language deprivation. DESCRIPTION: Many deaf children attend mainstream public schools, and the primary service offered to students who use American Sign Language (ASL) is generally a sign language interpreter. ASS

Eo na Mahu o Hawai'i: the extraordinary health needs of Hawai'i's Mahu.

An overview of health and social issues is presented here regarding Native Hawaiian transgenders. Perhaps due to relatively greater tolerance of gender diversity among Polynesian cultures, approximately 70% of all male-to-female transgenders in Hawai'i are Native Hawaiian. However, the overall climate is one of discrimination and harassment such that transgenders--who tend to be under-educated, under-employed, and medically underserved--may be the most severely impacted of all Native Hawaiians. Lei Anuenue, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention program for Native Hawaiians, has provide

Key developmental milestones helped to identify children with special educational needs and disabilities at an early stage.

AIM: Responding to developmental delay promptly is important, as it helps children to reach their full potential. This study investigated how developmental milestones predicted primary school children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at an early stage. METHODS: We obtained data about 36 milestones between 12 and 45 months using the Dutch Development Instrument. Development, primary school classification and background characteristics were collected from the Dutch Preventive Child Healthcare system in Utrecht from 2008 to 2016. We investigated SEND classifications and the

School performance at nine years of age in very premature and very low birth weight infants: perinatal risk factors and predictors at five years of age. Collaborative Project on Preterm and Small for Gestational Age (POPS) Infants in The Netherlands.

To assess the impact of both perinatal disorders and developmental problems identified at preschool age on school performance, we followed a virtually complete birth cohort of very premature (< 32 completed weeks of gestation) and very low birth weight infants until they were 9 years of age. In 84% of the survivors (n = 813), data on school performance were available for analysis. At the age of 9 years, 19% of the children were in special education. Of the children in mainstream education, 32% were in a grade below the appropriate level for age and 38% had special assistance. After correction

Cross-sectional investigation of gender differences in health-related quality of life among HIV patients: implications for gender mainstreaming in HIV management.

INTRODUCTION: health-related quality of life (HRQoL) can be affected by the existence of long-term medical conditions. This study compared the HRQoL of male and female patients living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who sought care at the antiretroviral clinic in a tertiary hospital. METHODS: a comparative cross-sectional study with 512 female and 512 male HIV outpatients receiving care at the antiretroviral clinic in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. The WHOQoL-HIV-BREF which conceptualized HRQoL as a function of six factors - physical, psychological, social, env

Mainstreaming of genomic medicine in gastroenterology, present and future: a nationwide survey of UK gastroenterology trainees.

OBJECTIVE: Genomics and personalised medicine are increasingly relevant for patients with gastroenterological conditions. We aim to capture the current state of genomics training in gastroenterology to review current understanding, clinical experience and long-term educational needs of UK trainees. DESIGN AND SETTING: A web-based nationwide survey of all UK gastroenterology specialty trainees was conducted in 2017. RESULTS: 100 trainees (14% of UK gastroenterology trainees) completed this survey. Only 9% and 16% of respondents believe that their local training programme adequately prepares t

Prevention of mental and behavioural disorders: implications for policy and practice.

There is sufficient evidence indicating the efficacy of interventions in reducing risk factors, increasing protective factors, preventing psychiatric symptoms and new cases of mental disorders. Macro-policy interventions to improve nutrition, housing and education or to reduce economic insecurity have proven to reduce mental health problems. Specific interventions to increase resilience in children and adolescents through parenting and early interventions, and programmes for children at risk for mental disorders such as those who have a mentally ill parent or have suffered parental loss or fam

Perceptions of mainstreaming: a systems approach.

This paper examines the perceptions of mainstreaming among six young people (mean age, 15.5 years; range 13 to 18 years) with physical disabilities, their parents, and seven teaching staff of one 'designated' school in the United Kingdom. The study used semistructured interviews to allow the participants to talk about their experiences of mainstreaming in their own words. The results were then analysed and formed the basis for a multiperspective case study. The analysis revealed that the processes involved that exclude the child with a physical disability from mainstream school life are highli

Socio-ecological barriers to women's empowerment in sanitation in Eastern Indonesia.

Low-income and marginalised groups in any setting are affected by inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sanitation access, particularly women and girls who are disproportionately affected mainly because of gender inequality. This paper discusses barriers to women's access to and participation in sanitation programs based on the case study in Central Lombok and West Manggarai, Eastern Indonesia. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted on 28 informants and 6 groups, respectively, and analysed using thematic analysis. The study found that women and girls in Easter

Genomic multidisciplinary teams: A model for navigating genetic mainstreaming and precision medicine.

AIM: Recent rapid advances in genomics are revolutionising patient diagnosis and management of genetic conditions. However, this has led to many challenges in service provision, education and upskilling requirements for non-genetics health-care professionals and remuneration for genomic testing. In Australia, Medicare funding with a Paediatric genomic testing item for patients with intellectual disability or syndromic features has attempted to address this latter issue. The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network - Westmead (SCHN-W) Clinical Genetics Department established Paediatric and Neurology

The End of the X-waiver: Excitement, Apprehension, and Opportunity.

With the passage of the MAT act (Mainstreaming Addiction Treatment) and the MATE Act (Medication Training and Expansion), the Drug Enforcement Agency "X-waiver" program governing the office-based prescription of buprenorphine for opioid use disorder has been immediately eliminated. The move was championed by vocal organizations with a rightful concern about buprenorphine access but was opposed by most physicians. Nonetheless, buprenorphine can now be prescribed like any schedule 3 medication. Studies show that despite rising opioid overdoses, buprenorphine prescription increases have been slow

Restrictive educational placements increase adolescent risks for students with early-starting conduct problems.

BACKGROUND: Students with early-starting conduct problems often do poorly in school; they are disproportionately placed in restrictive educational placements outside of mainstream classrooms. Although intended to benefit students, research suggests that restrictive placements may exacerbate the maladjustment of youth with conduct problems. Mixed findings, small samples, and flawed designs limit the utility of existing research. METHODS: This study examined the impact of restrictive educational placements on three adolescent outcomes (high school noncompletion, conduct disorder, depressive sym

Descriptive study of young disabled children aged 2-6, enrolled in mainstream schools, and benefiting from special needs assistants in the Bouches-du-Rhône in 2014.

BACKGROUND: Since the law of February 11, 2005, in France, the number of children with disabilities enrolled in ordinary schools has increased steadily. As a result, the amount of personal support provided by a special needs assistant (personal support) is also increasing. The aim of the study was to describe the diseases and impairments of disabled children aged 2-6, enrolled in mainstream schools and benefiting from personal support for schooling by special needs assistants in the Bouches-du-Rhône (France) in 2014. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed. Children include

The experience of bilateral cochlear implantation in a child with LEOPARD syndrome.

We present a 3-year old boy with Leopard syndrome. His clinical manifestations included a congenital bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. He underwent cochlear implantation on the right side at age 1 year and on the left side at age 1.5 years. The patient is doing very well and mainstreamed in a regular pre-school program with a teacher of the deaf and home based speech therapy. Bilateral cochlear implantation in the case of a child with Leopard syndrome can be successful.

Short breaks services for children with autistic spectrum disorders: factors associated with service use and non-use.

Short break services in a UK county were studied using a postal survey of 256 families with a child with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Results confirmed high degrees of stress and low levels of informal support for all families, but no significant difference in the informal support available to non-users as compared to users of short break services. Robinson & Stalker's (1990) 10-point dependency scale showed a significant difference in dependence and more difficult behaviors between children of users and non-users. However, a large number of non-users had children with high dependence

Still teaching 1948: the unfinished decolonization of Nigerian medical education.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing global momentum to decolonize health professions education, Nigerian medical education remains underrepresented in mainstream decolonization scholarship. APPROACH: This is a narrative, interpretive perspective informed by selected Nigerian medical education literature and the authors' professional experience, rather than a systematic, scoping, or integrative review. It examines why the visibility gap exists, what it obscures, and traces the field's evolution from its colonial curriculum origin to current reform efforts. KEY ARGUMENTS: We argue that this limited vi
