The glycocalyx and the structure of the microvilli were analysed in electron microscopy in 122 children with coeliac disease and secondary syndromes of malabsorption. Slight differences were noted in glycolayx structure between both groups of children. In children with coeliac disease its reduction was noted (after gluten challenge). Changes were observed also in the structure of the microvilli. They were lower and often with abnormal shape in coeliac disease, while they were high and of normal structure in secondary malabsorption syndromes.

We report a case of chronic infection by Strongyloides stercoralis in a 29-year-old Colombian woman who had been living in Spain for 2 years. The patient had recurrent abdominal pain and malabsorption syndrome. The diagnosis was made through intestinal biopsy in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Transport of the parasite through the lung parenchyma (Loeffler syndrome) was visible on simple chest X-ray. Bronchoalveolar lavage, bronchoalveolar aspirate and repeated stool examination were negative.

Fifty-four infants with the malabsorption syndrome and cow's milk intolerence seen during 1962-1971 were investigated. All had diarrhoea and failed to thrive. Most had vomiting and about 20% had atopic eczema and recurrent respiratory infections. Laboratory investigations revealed malabsorption, raised serum IgA, and precipitins to cow's milk.
