PURPOSE: To be successful, mandibular fracture reduction requires restoring premorbid occlusion. Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) is a founding principle of accurate mandibular fracture repair. Although arch bars are currently the standard in securing IMF, IMF screws have many potential benefits and should therefore not be overlooked. The goals of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of IMF screws in the management of mandibular fractures, describe the technique, and identify those who will benefit from it without compromising the end results.

Gunshot injuries of the mandible can result in high rates of complications, especially in cases of bone loss. A fractured mandible accompanying a gunshot wound almost always has an external wound; the fracture is always compound and comminuted. Sometimes management of these injuries may require multiple surgical interventions. In this clinical report, treatment of a patient, who had a mandibular fracture due to a gunshot wound, is presented.A 52-year-old man with a mandibular fracture in the right mandibular body accompanying a gunshot wound was operated on. Owing to a nonunion, a second surge

This report is a retrospective review of 74 cases of mandibular fractures managed in a craniomaxillofacial trauma centre between January 1994 and May 1998. Demographic data revealed that 85% of the patient population were male, with a mean age of 27.5 years. The commonest causes of injury were motor vehicle accidents (48.6%), followed by assault (16.2%) and accidental falls (17.6%). In 25 patients (33.8%) the fractures were single. Of these, fractures of the condylar region were the most common (8 patients). The remaining patients sustained fractures in two or more anatomic sites. There were o

Miniplate osteosynthesis with 2.0-mm screws is being increasingly utilized in the treatment of mandibular fractures, midface fractures, zygomatic fractures, orthognathic surgery, and in craniomaxillofacial surgery. It enables better anatomic reduction, better stability of fracture lines, quick recovery and return of function. To examine complications related to its use, data were compiled from the preoperative, immediately postoperative, and 6-months' postsurgery examinations of 143 patients with isolated mandibular fractures. Sixteen of the patients (11.2%) presented with postoperative compli

The authors report on a retrospective study of 205 consecutive patients at the Maxillofacial Unit of The Royal Melbourne Hospital to assess if adherence to Champy's principles in placement of miniplates in mandibular fractures minimises morbidity. 205 well documented cases of mandibular fractures treated with internal fixation, January 1985 to April 1990 were studied. The patients were assigned into three groups according to the type of fixation; 83 patients had miniplate fixation according to Champy's principles, 40 patients had miniplate fixation ignoring Champy's principles, 82 patients had

Much has been written on the aetiology of impacted maxillary canines, but ectopic mandibular canines, being a rarer anomaly, have attracted much less attention. This report describes a case in which the probable aetiology of the displacement of a lower canine was a mandibular fracture through the developing crypt.

A total of 45 mandibular fracture patients with 54 teeth in the fracture line were evaluated retrospectively. One tooth in the fracture line was lost in the accident, 6 were extracted later and 47 could be saved (87%). At the follow-up examination 38% of the teeth were diagnosed to have pulp necrosis, which was found more frequently in the older patients and in cases in which the time elapsing between the injury and the follow-up was longer. Pulp necrosis was also more frequent in cases in which the fracture line ran through the apex or dislocation of the fracture parts existed after the injur

A case in which trauma to the mandibular midline resulting in posterior displacement of the left condyle and subsequent fracture of the tympanic plate is presented. Use of computed tomography was helpful in confirming the presence of the injury.

When facial nerve paralysis complicates a mandibular fracture, it may be difficult to locate the point of injury, since the nerve may be injured in the fallopian canal by a secondary temporal bone fracture or in soft tissue by mandibular fragments. Following a review of eight previously reported cases, this paper presents two additional cases, one with bilateral, complete paralyses and the other with a unilateral paresis. In the first, the condyles were driven posteriorly, resulting in bilateral temporal bone fractures, a unilateral external canal stenosis, and a unilateral sensorineural heari

We have described a rare sagittal unilateral fracture of the head of the mandibular condyle caused by a trauma around the chin area, resulting in a dislocation of the fractured middle part towards the front and downwards. The removal takes place through surgical operation carried out by the endoral method.

A rare type of ramus fracture-dislocation has been presented. The inadequacy of standard mandibular fracture radiographic views for proper diagnosis of variable dislocations has been stressed. It was noted that proper positioning of the mandible in panoramic radiography would facilitate a satisfactory radiographic survey of the glenoid fossa and the condyle. In this case, interpositional silastic gap arthroplasty was performed to correct an extraarticular ankylosis and to restore mandibular function.

Some patients are concerned that after satisfactory healing of a mandibular fracture the jaw will be weaker than it was before the injury, and will break readily at the same site after relatively minor injury. We aimed to find out if these concerns have any basis, and report the pattern of fracture in a series of nine patients who had sustained fractures of the jaw on two separate occasions. All fractures were at different sites from the original ones, and in only one case was the fracture adjacent to plates that had been placed previously. Once a mandibular fracture has healed, the bone at th

Mandibular surgery encompasses a wide range of procedures, including the management of traumatic fractures and elective osteotomies, where optimal bone healing and soft-tissue regeneration are essential for successful clinical outcomes. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), a second-generation autologous platelet concentrate, has gained increasing attention because of its ability to provide a fibrin scaffold enriched with platelets, leukocytes, cytokines, and growth factors that promote angiogenesis, osteogenesis, and soft-tissue regeneration. This narrative review summarizes the current evidence regard

This study aimed to examine individuals undergoing surgery for the treatment of the fractured mandibular angle, using bite force, mandibular mobility, and electromyographic (EMG) analysis in many different clinical conditions, after 2 months postoperatively. Bite force was recorded with a digital dynamometer, model IDDK. The EMG activity (Myosystem-Br1) included the analysis of the masseter and temporal muscles. Mandibular mobility was measured using a digital pachymeter. The subjects were divided into 3 groups: G1, mandibular angle fracture (n = 7); G2, condylar process fracture (n = 5); and

The extraction of mandibular third molars is a common dental procedure. The complications include hemorrhage, pain, dental fracture, the displacement of teeth or fragments, iatrogenic damage or luxation of the second molar, neurologic injuries, soft tissue damage, subcutaneous emphysema, trismus, swelling, infection, and iatrogenic mandibular fracture. Fracture of the angle of the mandible associated with third molar removal is a rare but severe complication. This article describes a case of mandibular angle fracture associated with third molar extraction after mandibular angle osteotectomy, i
