Carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma of mandible: A case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The most common benign neoplasm of major and minor salivary glands is pleomorphic adenoma (PA). Around 80 % of all parotid neoplasms are pleomorphic adenomas, while 44-68 % and 38-43 % tumors were pleomorphic adenomas of submandibular and minor salivary gland tumors. PA has been reported in a variety of anatomic locations including true intraosseous mandibular tumor, external ear canal, TMJ region, lacrimal gland, epiglottis, larynx and nasopharynx, breast, lung, esophagus, sinonasal and skull base and trachea. Pleomorphic adenoma has a tendency to transform into a

Repair of complicated mandibular defects.

In most instances, the injured mandible can be successfully repaired with arch bars and intermaxillary fixation. However, it is important to identify certain potential problem situations early and apply special techniques for their treatment. Potential management problems, such as the non-compliant patient, the edentulous patient, gunshot wounds, radiated mandibles, tumors, and osteomyelitis, are reviewed. The use of special techniques, eg, the dynamic compression plate, the Morris biphase apparatus, the cobalt-chromium alloy (Vitallium) basket, a suction-irrigation apparatus, and the mandibul

[Complications of post-irradiation radiotherapy mandibular resection: problems of reconstruction (author's transl)].

One hundred and twenty-six patients underwent a mandibular resection (segmental or marginal) as a part in the treatment of a malignant lesion. The surgical morbidity is increased by the preoperative high-dose irradiation. Complications such as osteitis and/or fracture of the mandible were noted in 31 cases (a total of 80) who underwent a preoperative external irradiation with a tumor-dose of 5,500 rads or higher, whereas only in 8 cases (a total of 46) without such preoperative radiotherapy. Prophylactic antibiotics, the use of flaps to replace the buccal mucosa without any suture-tension, rep

In situ axial vascularization for regeneration of challenging mandibular defects, a feasibility trial and case report with long-term results.

Reconstructing mandibular defects using tissue engineering and regenerative modalities as an alternative to free flap surgery is a challenging procedure especially after cancer resection, irradiation or multiple surgeries due to the suboptimal local vascularity. In such cases using a mandibular construct without a dedicated vascular supply carries the risk of central necrosis and failure. We present an in situ vascularization of a tissue engineered mandibular construct with long term results up to 60 months. A 46-year-old male presented with a large marginal mandibular defect following 4 previ

Reconstruction of Extended Orbitomaxillectomy and Hemimandibulectomy Defects With Fibula Flaps and Patient-Specific Implants.

An extended orbitomaxillectomy and hemimandibulectomy for polyostotic juvenile ossifying fibroma resection were performed with the assistance of patient-specific cutting guides. The resulting defects were reconstructed in stages. First, a patient-specific mandibular reconstruction plate was fixed to the hemimandibulectomy defect in the same operation as the resection. After margins were proven to be free of tumor on histologic analysis, a free fibula flap contoured to the reconstruction plate was used to reconstruct the mandible. Reconstruction of the maxilla, alveolus, and orbit were performe

Three-dimensional evaluation of condylar position after mandibular reconstruction with a fibula free flap-comparison of different surgical techniques.

Three-dimensional positional changes of the temporomandibular joint after mandible reconstruction using microvascular fibula flaps were investigated in 58 patients. The results of preoperative virtually planned surgery, intraoperative resection- and cutting-guided surgery, and non-guided surgery were compared. Pre- and postoperative computed tomography data of each patient were processed and superimposed digitally. The condyle deviations and rotations along the axes and planes of the skull, as well as Euclidean distances, were determined. Reliability analyses, descriptive statistics, and non-p

[Mandibular condyle lacunae. A report on three cases (aneurysmal cyst, granuloma eosinophil and metastasis) (author's transl)].

Three cases of rare cystic tumors of the mandibular condyles are described: One case concerned a young 17-year-old girl with pain and joint crepitation due to an aneurysmal cyst. In the second case the presence of pain and a swelling led to the discovery of an eosinophil granuloma, with similar lesions in two other locations. A mandibular metastasis from a bronchial epithelioma was present in the third case.

Brown Tumor of Hyperparathyroidism Presenting as Mandibular Mass.

Mandibular tumors could be benign or malignant. Benign lesions could be cystic or solid. Examples of benign solid lesions are ameloblastoma, odontoma, and ossifying fibroma. Periapical cysts, follicular cysts, and odontogenic keratocysts are a few benign cystic lesions. Hemangioma, neurofibroma, giant cell granuloma, and metabolic bone disease are additional lesions to be considered in the differential diagnosis. An important uncommon cause of a mandibular mass is a Brown tumor secondary to primary hyperparathyroidism. Presented here is a case of a mandibular mass secondary to primary hyperpar

Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle: Resection and reconstruction using vertical sliding osteotomy of the mandibular ramus.

Osteochondroma is one of the most common benign bone tumours, although not in the craniofacial region. More than half of these appear in the coronoid process. It can appear on the mandibular condyle, especially in its medial half, and mainly affects women aged around forty years. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman with pain of several months' duration in the right temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and no other symptoms. Panoramic radiography showed an enlarged condyle with no subchondral cysts. Computed tomography showed a bony proliferation with benign signs and a scintigraphy revealed an

Osteoma of the mandibular condyloid process. Case report.

The incidence of true osteoma in the mandibular condyloid process is extremely rare. An unusual case in a 35-year-old man with a classic picture of facial asymmetry is reported. Because of the microscopic similarity of benign osteogenic neoplasma and the hyperplastic overgrowths, the diagnosis of osteoma is sometimes difficult. We believe that the essential differences between an osteoma and an exostosis lie in the location of the overgrowth, the extent of involvement of the condyle, and the age of the patient. Surgical excision is justified because benign tumors of bone do not invariably reta

Combined Use of Nonvascularized Iliac Crest Bone Graft and Submental Island Flap in Mandibular Reconstruction: A Technical Note.

Reconstruction following segmental resection of the mandible due to tumors poses significant aesthetic and functional challenges. While vascularized free tissue flaps remain the gold standard, they are associated with prolonged operative time, high cost, requirement for microsurgical expertise, and donor site morbidity. We present a novel technique combining a nonvascularized iliac crest bone graft (NVICBG) with a submental island flap (SIF) for mandibular reconstruction. Between February 2024 and May 2025, three patients underwent this procedure. Graft and flap survival was achieved in all ca

A rare case report of extensive mandibular osteoma corrected by unilateral mandibulectomy: Cytological, radiological, and pathological investigation.

BACKGROUND: Osteoma is a benign bone tumor that rarely affects animals. The most common bones involved with this tumor included the mandible, maxillofacial bones, and nasal sinuses. Definitive diagnosis is based on pathology findings which allow for differentiation with other bone lesions. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient, a 5-year-old intact male Mongrel dog presented with a huge mandibular mass that involved both the right and left mandible, and led to dental occlusion. The radiography was performed and depicted the intense mass with a well-demarcated edge, a short transitional zone between no

Rare clear cell odontogenic carcinoma associated with impacted tooth in a young patient: case report and literature review.

Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma (CCOC) is a rare malignant odontogenic tumor. It is characterized by showing, on histopathological examination, clusters of vacuolated and clear tumor cells with epithelial differentiation surrounded by fibrocollagenous stroma and fibroblasts. The present study presents a rare clinical case of mandibular CCOC associated with an impacted tooth in a 26-year-old woman surgically treated with mandibulectomy and reconstruction with iliac crest bone graft. The patient has been followed up for 22 months without signs of recurrence. A search for case report/case series

An unusual osteoma in the mandibular condyle and the successful replacement of the temporomandibular joint with a custom-made prosthesis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: An osteoma is a benign tumor of bone with unknown etiology and is considered rare, mostly restricted to the craniofacial skeleton. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes an uncommon condylar osteoma in a 67 years old white female patient with laterognathism to the left side, limited mouth opening, aesthetic change and pain associated with the right temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The histopathological examination confirmed osteoma. The lesion was surgically excised and immediate reconstruction was carried out using a custom-made total TMJ prosthesis. The patient has been in

Unilateral mandibular condylar osteochondroma treated with ipsilateral condylectomy and contralateral ramus osteotomy.

We successfully treated a 32-year-old woman who had facial asymmetry and unilateral mandibular condylar osteochondroma using ipsilateral mandibular condylectomy and contralateral ramus osteotomy. Mirror image analysis with a noncontact 3-dimensional image scanner showed that the soft tissue on the deviated side was protruded more than 5.50 mm compared with the nondeviated side. The patient was diagnosed as having facial asymmetry with a skeletal Class III jaw-base relationship caused by unilateral mandibular condylar osteochondroma. After 18 months of preoperative orthodontic treatment, an ips

Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a previously enucleated radiolucent lesion in the mandible. A case report.

Central muco epidermoid carcinomas (CMC) are rare tumours, representing about 2 to 3% of all mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Usually affecting the mandible, they appear as uni- or multilocular radiolucent lesions. We report a case of CMC in a 52-year-old Middle Eastern woman who presented with pain, limitation of jaw movement and tingling sensation of the tongue, related to a radiolucent lesion in the angle of the mandible. The lesion was first detected but not diagnosed in another hospital three years earlier. We describe the progression of the lesion over the past three years and describe the cli

Bilateral mental nerve neuropathy as the sole presenting symptom of Burkitt's Lymphoma.

Vasculitis restricted to the peripheral nervous system (PNS), referred to as nonsystemic vasculitic neuropathy (NSVN), has been described in many reports since 1985 but remains a poorly understood and perhaps under-recognized condition. There are no uniform diagnostic criteria. Classification is complicated by the occurrence of vasculitic neuropathies in many systemic vasculitides affecting small-to-medium-sized vessels and such clinical variants as nonsystemic skin/nerve vasculitis and diabetic/non-diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy. Most patients present with painful, stepwise pr
