Performance of a constructed wetland in Grand Marais, Manitoba, Canada: Removal of nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and antibiotic resistance genes from municipal wastewater.

BACKGROUND: The discharge of complex mixtures of nutrients, organic micropollutants, and antibiotic resistance genes from treated municipal wastewater into freshwater systems are global concerns for human health and aquatic organisms. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are genes that have the ability to impart resistance to antibiotics and reduce the efficacy of antibiotics in the systems in which they are found. In the rural community of Grand Marais, Manitoba, Canada, wastewater is treated passively in a sewage lagoon prior to passage through a treatment wetland and subsequent release into s…

Manitoba aboriginal kindred with original cerebro-oculo- facio-skeletal syndrome has a mutation in the Cockayne syndrome group B (CSB) gene.

Cerebro-oculo-facio-skeletal (COFS) syndrome is a rapidly progressive neurological disorder leading to brain atrophy with calcification, cat … tions in the CSA or CSB genes. In this report, we present evidence that two probands related to the Manitoba Aboriginal population group within which COFS syndrome was originally reported have cellular phenotypes indistinguishable from those in CS cells. The identical mutation was detected in the CSB gene from both children with COFS syndrome and in both p …

Comparative effects of lumbar spine bone area from DXA on trabecular bone score and bone mineral density: the Manitoba BMD Registry.

UNLABELLED: Artifactual effects of bone area from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) confound bone mineral density (BMD) measurements and in turn complicate fracture risk assessment. Trabecular bone score (TBS) from the lumbar spine DXA image was found to be minimally affected by bone area, which helps to improve fracture risk assessment. PURPOSE: We hypothesized that TBS is less sensitive to the effects of skeletal size than lumbar spine BMD. Our aim was to compare the effects of DXA-derived lumbar spine bone area on lumbar spine TBS and BMD, and how this affects subsequent fracture risk

Ovarian Cancer in the Older Manitoban Population-Treatment Tolerance and Cancer-Related Outcomes: A Manitoba Ovarian Cancer Outcomes (MOCO) Group Study.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, individuals with gynecologic reproductive organs (ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus) over the age of 70 comprise a large proportion of epithelial ovarian cancer patients. These patients often have co-morbidities, polypharmacy, or decreased functional status that may impact treatment initiation and tolerance. Despite this, there is limited evidence to guide treatment for older patients diagnosed with ovarian epithelial carcinoma. METHODS: This is a retrospective study with data from Manitoba, Canada. The data were obtained from the Manitoba Ovarian Cancer Database, the Ma…

Real-world predictors of survival in patients with extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer in Manitoba, Canada: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) is an incurable cancer with poor prognosis in which characteristics predictive of long-term survival are debated. The utility of agents such as immune checkpoint inhibitors highlights the importance of identifying key characteristics and treatment strategies that contribute to long-term survival and could help guide therapeutic decisions. OBJECTIVE: This real-world analysis examines the characteristics, treatment patterns, and clinical outcomes of patients receiving chemotherapy without immunotherapy for ES-SCLC in Manitoba, Canada.…

Measuring the impact of COVID-19 on time to treatment for individuals diagnosed with cancer in Manitoba, Canada using an interrupted time series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Delays in treatment can lead to increases in cancer morbidity and mortality. There were many concerns that the COVID-19 pandemic led to delays in cancer treatment. Several studies have examined this issue but with serious limitations. We conducted a study that addressed many of these limitations and evaluated changes in first treatment, surgery, systemic therapy, and radiation therapy (RT) during the pandemic for individuals diagnosed with cancer in Manitoba, Canada. METHODS: A population-based, quasi-experimental cross-sectional study with an interrupted time series analysis was …

Dietary Intake Patterns and Lifestyle Behaviors of Pregnant Women Living in a Manitoba First Nations Community: Implications for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

The information on the nutrition status of women at-risk of carrying a child with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is scarce, particularly in the First Nations population living on reserve. This study examined and compared nutrition status, dietary intake, and lifestyle patterns of pregnant at-risk, defined as those who consume alcoholic drink during the current pregnancy, and non-at-risk women living in northern Manitoban community. Thirty-seven pregnant, First Nations women (at-risk n = 15; non-at-risk, n = 22) were recruited to participate in the study. A questionnaire, presented in p…

FRAX® Adjustment Using Renormalized Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) from L1 Alone may be Optimal for Fracture Prediction: The Manitoba BMD Registry.

Lumbar spine trabecular bone score (TBS) used in conjunction with FRAX® improves 10-year fracture prediction. The derived FRAX risk adjustment is based upon TBS measured from L1-L4, designated TBSL1-L4-FRAX. In prior studies, TBS measurements that include L1 and exclude L4 give better fracture stratification than L1-L4. We compared risk stratification from TBS-adjusted FRAX using TBS derived from different combinations of upper lumbar vertebral levels renormalized for level-specific differences in individuals from the Manitoba Bone Density Program aged >40 years with baseline assessment of TBS…

"Giving voice": Evaluation of an integrated telehealth community care model by parents/guardians of children diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in Manitoba.

BACKGROUND: In 2000, Manitoba began utilizing telehealth services for the assessment, diagnosis and follow-up of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Since that time, the use of telehealth in Manitoba has expanded to the delivery of education and support to families caring for children with FASD in rural and remote areas of the province. The purpose of this study was to expand on a previous evaluation through a focus on the participant experience. Our objectives were thus to explore the experience of families with the telehealth process and to examine the use of telehealth in diagnostic a…

A large novel deletion in the APC promoter region causes gene silencing and leads to classical familial adenomatous polyposis in a Manitoba Mennonite kindred.

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant syndrome caused by the inheritance of germline mutations in the APC tumour sup … ncing of the APC allele. A few genetic disorders have been characterized as over-represented in the Manitoba Mennonite population, however, the incidence of cancer has not been recognized as increased in this population as compared to other Manitoba ethnic groups. This study strengthens the likelihood that this novel APC promoter mutation is linked to this …

THE UNIVERISTY OF MANITOBA FOLLOW-UP STUDY: A PROSPECTIVE INVESTIGATION OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE. I. GENERAL DESCRIPTION--MORTALITY AND INCIDENCE OF CORONARY HEART DISEASE.

A prospective study of cardiovascular disease was initiated in 1946 whereby 3983 healthy North American males, 91% under age 40, were subjected to periodic electrocardiograms and medical examinations between 1948 and 1963. The health of all but five of the 3773 survivors was known in 1963. There were 210 deaths: aircraft accidents accounted for 45%, cardiovascular disease 20%, cancer 11% and other causes 23%. The aggregate mortality closely resembled that of the Canadian Life Table 1955-57 (Male). Extra deaths were observed under age 40 owing to a high frequency of flying accidents. At older a
