ACL reconstruction with quadriceps tendon graft and press-fit fixation versus quadruple hamstring graft and interference screw fixation - a matched pair analysis after one year follow up.

BACKGROUND: The objective of the study was to compare the results of a primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) using the press-fit fixation technique for a quadriceps tendon (QT) graft to a standard quadrupled hamstring (HT) graft with interference screw fixation. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study with a 12-month follow up provided data for 92 patients. Exclusion criteria were accompanying ligament injuries and contralateral ACL injury. Patients who suffered a graft failure, which was defined as a side-to-side difference of > 3 mm, or infection were rated 'D' according to

The comparison of minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy and retrograde intrarenal surgery for stones larger than 2 cm in patients with a solitary kidney: a matched-pair analysis.

PURPOSE: To compare the treatment outcomes between retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) and minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy (MPCNL) for the management of stones larger than 2 cm in patients with solitary kidney. METHODS: Between December 2012 and March 2014, 53 patients with a solitary kidney suffering from urinary stones larger than 2 cm were treated with RIRS. The outcomes of these patients were compared to a cohort of similar solitary kidney stone patients who underwent MPCNL using a matched-pair analysis (1:1 scenario). Cases were matched sequentially using the following c…

Autologous bone-marrow transplants compared with chemotherapy for children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in a second remission: a matched-pair analysis. The Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster Study Group.

It is unclear how best to treat children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) who are in a second remission. Treatment with bone-marrow transplants from HLA-identical siblings results in a statistically greater likelihood of leukaemia-free survival than does chemotherapy. Less than 25% of relapsed patients are able to benefit from this therapy due to a lack of matching donors; chemoradiotherapy or autologous BMT are considered for the rest. We compared treatment results for children who underwent autologous BMT with those who had chemotherapy. All patients were registered between 1983-94 i

The outcome of patients with inflammatory bowel disease-associated colorectal cancer is not worse than that of patients with sporadic colorectal cancer-a matched-pair analysis of survival.

PURPOSE: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk for colorectal cancer (CRC). In IBD patients, cancer is often diagnosed in advanced stages and conflicting data on survival compared to sporadic CRC have been reported. The aim of this study was to directly compare clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients with IBD-CRC and sporadic CRC. METHODS: The clinical and pathological data of 63 patients with IBD-CRC and 3710 patients with sporadic CRC treated at the University Hospital of Erlangen between 1995 and 2015 were compared. Forty-seven M0 patients with IB

Copy number evolution and its relationship with patient outcome-an analysis of 178 matched presentation-relapse tumor pairs from the Myeloma XI trial.

Structural chromosomal changes including copy number aberrations (CNAs) are a major feature of multiple myeloma (MM), however their evolution in context of modern biological therapy is not well characterized. To investigate acquisition of CNAs and their prognostic relevance in context of first-line therapy, we profiled tumor diagnosis-relapse pairs from 178 NCRI Myeloma XI (ISRCTN49407852) trial patients using digital multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification. CNA profiles acquired at relapse differed substantially between MM subtypes: hyperdiploid (HRD) tumors evolved predominantly in

The prevalence, type and severity of cardiovascular disease in diabetic and non-diabetic patients: a matched-paired retrospective analysis using coronary angiography as the diagnostic tool.

People with diabetes mellitus have a 2-8-fold excess in cardiovascular mortality than people without diabetes. This study compared angiographically determined cardiovascular disease in 79 patients with diabetes mellitus and an equal number of matched controls without diabetes under the age of 55 years. Seventy-nine diabetic patients coming to coronary angiography during a 12-month period were reviewed retrospectively along with 79 control patients matched for age (+/- 3 years), sex, ethnic origin and risk factors (hyperlipidemia, body mass index and smoking history). The angiographic features

Molnupiravir compared to nirmatrelvir/ritonavir for COVID-19 in high-risk patients with haematological malignancy in Europe. A matched-paired analysis from the EPICOVIDEHA registry.

INTRODUCTION: Molnupiravir and nirmatrelvir/ritonavir are antivirals used to prevent progression to severe SARS-CoV-2 infections and decrease hospitalisation and mortality rates. Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir was authorised in Europe in December 2021, whereas molnupiravir is not yet licensed in Europe as of February 2022. Molnupiravir may be an alternative to nirmatrelvir/ritonavir because it is associated with fewer drug-drug interactions and contraindications. A caveat for molnupiravir is the mode of action induces viral mutations. Mortality rate reduction with molnupiravir was less pronounced than

Trans-anal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) versus trans-anal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM): a comparative case-control matched-pairs analysis.

AIM: Since its introduction, transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) has become the treatment of choice for rectal benign lesions not amenable to flexible endoscopic excision and for early rectal cancer. Disposable soft devices as the Trans-anal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) are a valid alternative to non-disposable rigid trans-anal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) platforms. The aim of the present study is to compare TEM and TAMIS in terms of incidence of R1 resection and lesion fragmentation which were combined in a composite outcome called quality resection. Perioperative complication and

A matched pairs analysis of non-rib-spreading, fully endoscopic, mini-incision technique versus conventional mini-thoracotomy for mitral valve repair.

OBJECTIVES: Advances in video-assistance lead to an increase in minimal access mitral valve surgery (MAMVS) with decreased incision size yet maintaining the same quality of surgery. Further reduction in surgical trauma and at the same time improved visual guidance can be achieved by a non-rib-spreading fully 3D endoscopic technique (NRS-3D). We compared patients who underwent MAMVS either through an NRS fully 3D endoscopic or rib-spreading (RS) access in a retrospective matched-pair analysis. METHODS: A matched pairs analysis was undertaken of retrospectively collected data of 284 consecutive…

Prediction of outcome of total hip arthroplasty based on initial postoperative radiographic analysis. Matched, paired comparisons of failed versus successful femoral components.

All patients treated by total hip arthroplasty (THA) from 1971 to 1980 were analyzed to assess cause and rate of revision. Multiparameter radiographic analysis of failed femoral components ( FFC ) and matched control THAs was performed to determine predictability of failure, based on initial postarthroplasty and subsequent follow-up radiographic examinations. Rate of revision for all causes was 10.4% (35 THAs ) for 335 THAs in 270 patients with a follow-up period averaging 5.0 (range, 2-10) years. Cause of revision was component loosening in 7.2% (24 THAs ) [23 (6.9%) with femoral component lo

Does Residual Invasive Disease in Wide Local Excision after Diagnosis with Partial Biopsy Technique Influence Survival in Melanoma? Matched-Pair Analysis of Multicenter Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial I and II.

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend excisional/complete biopsy for melanoma diagnosis, owing to high rates of residual disease found at wide local excision (WLE) after partial biopsy techniques. We sought to determine any survival disadvantage associated with the presence of residual invasive melanoma in the WLE after diagnosis with a partial biopsy technique. STUDY DESIGN: Data were examined from Multicenter Selective Lymphadenectomy Trials I and II (MSLT-I and -II), 2 large melanoma trials. Patients diagnosed with excisional/complete biopsy were excluded. Clinicopathologic characterist

Minimally invasive surgical treatment of minimally displaced acetabular fractures does not improve pain, mobility or quality of life compared to conservative treatment: a matched-pair analysis of 50 patients.

BACKGROUND: Currently available procedures for the treatment of minimally displaced acetabular fractures include conservative treatment and minimally invasive percutaneous screw fixation. Screw fixation of acetabular fractures allows patients' early full-weight bearing due to improved biomechanic stability. Can the range of motion, pain and mobility and quality of life in patients with acetabular fractures be improved by minimally invasive screw fixation, compared to conservative treatment in the long term? METHODS: Patients treated for a minimally displaced acetabular fracture, either conser

The Impact of Hypothermic Pulsatile Machine Perfusion Versus Static Cold Storage: A Donor-Matched Paired Analysis in a Scenario of High Incidence of Delayed Kidney Graft Function.

BACKGROUND The present study analyzed the impact of hypothermic pulsatile machine perfusion (MP) following a long period of static cold (SC) storage in the peculiar Brazilian scenario of high incidence of delayed graft function (DGF), despite good donor characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective analysis, with a 1-year follow-up, of 206 recipients of donor-matched paired kidneys was performed. Of the 206 donor kidneys, 103 were maintained exclusively in static cold storage (SC group) and 103 were kept on machine perfusion after a period of SC preservation (MP group). All donors were

Concomitant fractures in patients with proximal femoral fractures lead to a prolonged hospital stay but not to increased complication rates or in-house mortality if treated surgically: a matched pair analysis.

BACKGROUND: Impact of concomitant fractures on patients sustaining a proximal femur fracture remains unclear. Rising numbers and patient need for rehab is an important issue. The objective of our study was to investigate the impact of concomitant fractures, including all types of fractures, when treated operatively, for proximal femur fractures on the length of hospital stay, in-house mortality and complication rate. METHODS: Observational retrospective cohort single-center study including 85 of 1933 patients (4.4%) with a mean age of 80.5 years, who were operatively treated for a proximal fe
