Sinusitis of dental origin is a relatively frequent entity, but the presence of an odontoma in the sinus as a source of this pathology is exceptional. Here we present a case of a young patient who presented chronic maxillary sinusitis over 2 years, originating in an odontoma located in the sinus drainage area.

Osteomas are relatively common, benign, slow-growing, often asymptomatic neoplasms of the paranasal sinuses, occurring mainly in frontal and ethmoid sinuses. Surgical removal is done if they extend beyond the boundaries of the sinus, keep enlarging, are localised in the region adjacent to the nasofrontal duct, or if signs of chronic sinusitis are present and, irrespective of their size, in symptomatic tumours. Progressive headaches and chronic inflammation of the adjacent mucous membrane are most common symptoms. Endoscopic surgery plays an important role in management of ethmoid, sphenoid and

Ameloblastomas are slow-growing, aggressive odontogenic epithelial tumors that originate from the jawbone. One of the most easily relapsing maxillofacial tumors, ameloblastomas mainly occur in the mandibular molar area and ascending branch, although they can occasionally occur in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. A 14-year-old child with autism spectrum disorder underwent sinus computed tomography (CT) under anesthesia. A swollen tumor had grown in the left maxillary sinus, and the bone of the maxillary sinus was damaged. Nine months after the first operation, recurrence was observed in

BACKGROUND: Nasopharygeal fibroangioma (NPF) can be approached through lateral rhinotomy, the middle skull fossa approach and the transcranial-facial combined approach. It is complicated and thus results in more insults, and when adopted, the total resection rate of tumor is still low. The nasal endoscope is minimally invasive, the dead angles of a craniotomy, such as sphenoid sinus, maxillary sinus, and nasopharynx are easily approached by an endoscope. Lateral rhinotomy have to make facial incision and affects maxillary bone development. We combined the craniotomy and endoscopic approach int

Introduction Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare benign neoplasm in the nasopharynx. The tumor tends to be locally aggressive and is typically seen in adolescent boys. Extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas have been reported sporadically in the literature. They most commonly originate from the maxillary sinus. Objectives A 26-year-old woman was referred to our clinic with intermittent epistaxis from the right nasal passage for the previous 2 months. Maxillofacial magnetic resonance imaging showed a lobular, contoured mass originating from the right inferior turbinate and hanging in the

OBJECTIVES: Tumors involving the anterior portion of the maxillary sinus remain technically challenging to access via an endoscopic approach. The modified endoscopic Denker's (MED) procedure was recently introduced to address such lesions. We present a multicenter series of 58 patients with tumors involving the anterior maxillary sinus successfully resected using a MED procedure and present the clinical outcomes and complications.
METHODS: A multi-institution retrospective chart review was performed on patients who underwent the MED approach for the management of tumors involving the anterior

Summary A 44-year-old woman with left nasal obstruction and facial numbness for 4 months was admitted to hospital. The patient did not have amblyopia, vision loss, runny nose with blood, dizziness ,headache or other discomfort. In 1991 and 2001, the patient were pathologically diagnosed as pleomorphic adenomas.CT of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses showed that in the left maxillary sinus there was an about 4.4 cm×4.5 cm×4.7 cm large mass soft tissue density, showing expansive growth protruding into the left orbital floor.MRI showed that the lumped short T1 signal was seen in the left maxillar

Using a biochemical technique, the authors characterized and identified a plasminogen activator (PA) derived from tissue extracts of antrochoanal polyp (AP) and paranasal mucous membrane (PMM) with chronic sinusitis. The results of fibrin zymography indicated that the tissue extracts of AP revealed two lytic zones and that those of PMM revealed a single lytic zone on fibrin-agarose plates. One of the AP zones exhibited the same relative mobility as the PMM zone (molecular weight: 65 kd), while the other AP zone had a smaller molecular weight (about 54 kd). Goat immunoglobulin G (IgG) fraction

A case of zygomycosis involving the maxillary sinus in a normal host and mimicking paranasal malignancy is presented. Computed tomographic images showing destruction of adjoining bony structures and histologic features of fungi are described and presented. A successful outcome was achieved with amphotericin B irrigation and parenteral amphotericin B. Nasal biopsy should be advised by both radiologists and clinicians in all cases of lesions that look like malignancy in the sinus areas before a treatment modality is initiated.

Photoimmunotherapy (PIT) using lasers to target treatment areas is effective for unresectable locally advanced or unresectable locoregionally recurrent head and neck cancer; however, there are only two devices to target the treatment area. One illuminates tumour tissue through a needle, and the other illuminates tumour tissue superficially. Treating lesions surrounded by bone, such as in maxillary sinus cancer, is difficult. We report the first case of PIT for unresectable recurrent maxillary sinus cancer employing surgical navigation and computed tomography guidance in a 56-year-old man. Alth

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy (MNTI) is an uncommon tumour affecting predominantly the craniofacial bones of the newborn infants. The neural crest origin of the tumour has been confirmed. MNTI is generally accepted as a benign tumour despite of its rapid and locally infiltrative growth. Recurrence rate varies between 10% and 60%, and malignant behaviour has been reported in 6.5% of MNTIs. Systematic review of the literature revealed 445 MNTIs published between 1918 and 2010. We present additional two cases of MNTI from our Department, typical in all terms, which equals a total nu

Sarcomas are a rare heterogeneous group of neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. In the redistribution of all head and neck malignancies, sarcomas are represented by only 1%. Herein, we report a case of a 66-year-old patient with right maxillary sinus sarcoma that spread through the ostiomeatal complex, infiltrated the septum, all ethmoid cells, frontal sinus, involved the entire right nasal cavity and penetrated to the nasopharynx. Patient was treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy. The histopathology indicated poorly differentiated sarcoma with elements of Ewing'

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the maxillary sinus in an 82-year-old Caucasian woman.
BACKGROUND: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the maxillary sinus has non-specific signs and symptoms that may be confused with benign inflammatory conditions and upper respiratory infections.
METHODS: An incisional biopsy was performed. CD20+ /CD3- /Ki-67: 95% cells were observed.
CONCLUSION: A good medical history, clinical and imaging evaluations and immunohistochemical reactions are crucial to establish a correct and early diagnosis of DLBCL.

Ethmoid sinus osteomas are rare, benign, encapsulated neoplasms of the paranasal region. They can lead to various complications such as sinusitis, orbital cellulitis, proptosis, and diplopia. The treatment protocol of these lesions changed remarkably as powered instrumentation of functional endoscopic sinus surgery evolved and otolaryngologists gained experience. Here, the authors report a 30-year-old female who was diagnosed with a giant right-sided ethmoid sinus osteoma and discuss diagnostic and treatment modalities of these lesions in consonance with the current literature.

This article is a continuation of the "Do You Know Your Guidelines" series. This was launched as an initiative of the American Head and Neck Society to increase the awareness of current best practices pertaining to head and neck cancer. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines for managing cancer of the paranasal sinuses are reviewed in a systematic fashion. These guidelines outline the workup, treatment, and surveillance of patients with cancer of the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses.
