Mediastinal masses in dogs were diagnosed as basaloid carcinoma associated with multiple thymic cysts (MTCs). The masses were composed of MTCs and proliferating intracystic neoplastic basaloid cells, which immunohistochemically diffusely expressed p63 and cytokeratin 19. A gradual transition from the basal cell layers lining the cysts walls to the neoplastic cells was seen, and it was indicated that the neoplastic cells had originated from the basal cell layers of the cysts. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of basaloid carcinoma occurring in the mediastinal cavity in dogs

We hereby report a rare case of a mature type teratoma that perforated the lung and combined with aspergilloma in the tumor cyst. The patient was a 48-year-old female, who complained of coughing and sputum. The chest roentogenography and chest CT suggested aspergilloma. The patient was operated upon. From the intraoperative and pathological findings, a mature type mediastinal teratoma was found to have perforated the bronchus and lung, and combined with aspergilloma in the cyst of the tumor. The tumor was resected, the drainage bronchus was closed. The mediastinal teratoma and aspergilloma hav

Hattori reported isolated posterior mediastinal paravertebral müllerian cysts of undetermined pathogenesis in women. We report a 41-year-old woman with a family history of anencephaly, spina bifida, and scoliosis who presented with increasing left-sided mid-thoracic pain uncontrolled by her usual pain medication for symptomatic moderate rotary scoliosis. A magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a paravertebral saccular lesion at the level of the sixth thoracic vertebra. The 2.1×1.5×1.3 cm T6 paravertebral cyst was excised through a left thoracotomy. The final microscopic diagnosis and immunoh

OBJECTIVE: To review the experience of diagnosis and surgical treatment of mediastinal tumors and cysts.
METHODS: The clinical data of 343 cases with mediastinal tumors and cysts who underwent operation from March 1996 to April 2005, 208 males and 135 females, aged 40.5 +/- 16.1, were analyzed.
RESULTS: No specific symptom and sign was found among the patients. Tumor of Thymus accounted for 42.24%. 300 of the 343 patients were subjected to radical excision, and 25 patients to partial excision. The diagnosis of all the patients was confirmed by postoperative histopathological examination. Sur

The mediastinal bronchogenic cyst is one of rare congenital foregut anomalies, with low frequency and usually asymptomatic. When secondary infection develops, it rapidly increases in size and may compress the respiratory system, and cause acute respiratory distress, in that condition, emergency surgical intervention will be necessary. After operation which includes a complete cystectomy or a partial resection of the cyst, the prognosis is good. It is difficult to differentiate the bronchogenic cyst from the esophageal cyst on the basis of clinical examination. Correct diagnosis depends on the

INTRODUCTION: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is less commonly used in nonmalignant diseases. In particular, its application in mediastinal cystic lesions has been reported less frequently. EBUS-TBNA is a reassuringly safe procedure with an overall complication rate less than 2%, and serious adverse event rate of 0.14% to 0.16%. The most common complications are infections (mediastinal cyst infection most seen).
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 28-year-old male presented to the hospital with mediastinal cyst that was incidentally discovered by computed tomograp…

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus species. Mediastinal involvement is rare, especially in children. We report a case of a four-year and eight-month-old girl who presented with progressive shortness of breath, cyanosis, and weight loss over two months. Imaging revealed a large cystic lesion in the middle mediastinum, compressing the trachea and superior vena cava. Surgical excision confirmed a hydatid cyst, and postoperatively, the patient received antihelmintic therapy with a favorable recovery. Mediastinal hydatid cysts are rare but should be considered in endemi

INTRODUCTION: Echinococcus is a common infection in an endemic country like Bhutan. Mediastinal echinococcosis is rare. Although presentation due to a mediastinal echinococcal cyst is variable according to the cyst's location, a reaction due to rupture of the cyst and simultaneous reaction to an administration of antibiotics such as ceftriaxone can cause a diagnostic challenge. We present a rare case of a mediastinal echinococcal cyst that ruptured at the time of admission, causing a diagnostic challenge of the cause of the reaction.

BACKGROUND: Müllerian cysts of the posterior mediastinum are rare, benign lesions typically discovered incidentally via routine medical exams.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a distinctive case of a 49-year-old asymptomatic woman, illustrating a rare Müllerian cyst located in the posterior mediastinum with serous papillary cystadenoma-like features, a novel finding in the medical literature. Identified during a routine health screening in December 2020, a 20 mm cystic lesion adjacent to the T4-5 vertebral body was detected through chest CT and MRI, initially suggesting a neurogenic tumor. We report a unique case of mediastinal grey zone lymphoma that was considered to originate from CD20+CD30+ Hodgkin cell-like cells associated with a multilocular thymic cyst that had been completely removed 4 years previously. In the formerly resected thymus, irregular-shaped cysts were observed, and large CD20+CD30+ Hodgkin cell-like cells proliferated in close association with the proliferating thymic epithelial cells. This case suggests the important role of thymic columnar epithelial cells in the proliferation of thymic B cells and the tumorigenesis of mediastinal grey zone lymphoma. Also,

Bronchogenic cysts are the most common cystic mediastinal lesion in children. Bronchogenic cyst causing unilateral obstructive emphysema is a rare presentation. We report the case of a one and half month old infant who presented with respiratory distress which was initially suspected as left pneumothorax on frontal chest radiograph but was later found to be due to hyperinflated left lung and hence the possibility of congenital lobar emphysema was considered. CT thorax and limited MRI sections revealed a cystic lesion in mediastinum causing obstructive emphysema and mediastinal displacement. He

In a patient presenting with a roentgenographic retrocardiac density, left pleural effusion and distal oesophageal displacement, echocardiography confirmed presence of a pseudocyst in the posterior mediastinum. Pancreatic origin was suspected. Left thoracolaparotomy revealed the large (900 ml), exclusively mediastinal pseudocyst, surrounding the aorta and adherent to the diaphragm, with high amylase content. Decompression was achieved with a retrocolic and gastric Roux-en-Y loop by transdiaphragmatic cystojejunostomy.

Split notochord syndrome is a spectrum of congenital spinal malformations that develops due to an adhesion between endoderm and ectoderm causing the "splitting" of notochord. Neurenteric cyst is one of the components of split notochord syndrome. We report CT and MRI findings of an unusual case with thoracal spinal cord herniation into a mediastinal neurenteric cyst.
