A hamster model of equine herpesvirus 9 induced encephalitis.

An acute and lethal infection of equine herpesvirus 9 (EHV-9), a new type of equine herpesvirus, was established in Syrian hamsters by intranasal inoculation. Clinical symptoms included the loss of body weight, nasal and ocular discharges and apparent neurological symptoms. Both LD50 and ID50 were equal at 33 plaque forming units. Histological and immunohistochemical examination demonstrated that the virus replicated in the olfactory mucosal cells and in the neurons of the olfactory bulbs, cerebrum and mesencephalon. The induction of encephalitis by intranasal but not by other routes of inocul

Decreased messenger RNA expression of key markers of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system following vitamin E deficiency in the rat.

We have evaluated the effect of a vitamin E-deficient diet on the rat nigrostriatal dopaminergic system. After 15 days of deficient diet, the amount and activity of striatal and nigral tyrosine hydroxylase increased, which contrasted with a decreased messenger RNA expression for tyrosine hydroxylase and the dopamine transporter in the ventral mesencephalon. When we prolonged the deficiency of vitamin E for 30 days, dopamine levels did not differ in both areas. In contrast, messenger RNA levels for tyrosine hydroxylase and the dopamine transporter were markedly reduced in 30-day deficient rats.

Neurochemical changes in newborn rat's brain after gestational cadmium and lead exposure.

Gestational administration of cadmium (10 mg/l) and lead (300 mg/l) produced a strong decrease in proteins at birth (-17%) and on day 5 (-31%) as well as in brain lipid amount on both days (-11 and -23%, respectively). At day 5 postnatal the exposure also produced a marked decrease in DNA and RNA concentrations with respect to the control group. On the other hand, we found a significant increase of indoleamine content in all brain areas studied in the cadmium-lead group and so the dopamine and its metabolite in mesencephalon, whereas dopamine levels in metencephalon decreased significantly. Occipitotranstentorial approach for lesions of the superior cerebellar hemisphere: technical report.

OBJECTIVE: The occipitotranstentorial approach is well accepted for lesions of the pineal region, superior cerebellar vermis, or mesencephalon. Although evidently suitable, this approach has not, to our knowledge, been reported for lesions of the superior cerebellar hemisphere in adults. Experience with this approach is reported. METHODS: Four patients underwent surgery between August 1995 and March 1997. The findings obtained are evaluated. RESULTS: All lesions were situated in the quadrangular lobules (one extending into the vermis), and all were completely removed. Postoperative deficits,

Effect of neonatal 6-hydroxydopamine treatment on experimental vasospasm following a subarachnoid hemorrhage in the rat.

Intracisternal injection of blood in the rat produces an angiographically demonstrable biphasic cerebral arterial vasospasm. Systemic 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) treatment in the neonatal stage, which causes a depletion of noradrenaline (NA) from both sympathetic and central NA-containing nerve fibers, prevents the development of the late spasm phase, while the acute spasm occurs to the same extent as in normal animals. The occurrence of acute spasm can be prevented by lesioning in the mesencephalon of the ascending catecholamine fibers originating in the lower brainstem and projecting to the h

[X-ray computed tomography in central pontine myelinolysis. 2 cases].

Two cases of central pontine myelinolysis were studied by computerized tomography (CT). One patient had chronic alcoholism, the other porphyria variegata; both initially presented with water-and-electrolyte disorders, notably hyponatraemia. The neurological disorders consisted of acute pseudobulbar syndrome which totally regressed within 15 days to 1 month. CT demonstrated a low density area in the pons, extending to the mesencephalon in one case. Despite clinical cure, this low density persisted for 16 and 20 months respectively, counting from the onset of neurological symptoms. In central po

Peripheral circulatory responses to acute hyperoxia.

Acute hyperoxia (1 atm) in anesthetized dogs produced a 14% decrease in cardiac output relative to that observed with FIo2 = 0.21 and was associated with 7% decreases in heart rate and stroke volume. Changes in the distribution of peripheral blood flow during hyperoxia, as measured with radioactive labeled microspheres, included decreases in renal cortical flow (-20%), retinal blood flow (-27%), and blood flow to the caudate nucleus, mesencephalon, hippocampus, and cerebellum. Absolute blood flow to intestinal viscera, to respiratory and skeletal muscle, and to fat were unchanged. Simulation o

[Locked-in syndrome. Report of a case and review of the literature].

The case of a 46 year-old man who had a locked-in syndrome is reported. The patient had a haemorragic vascular accident with tetraplegia, anartria, vertical ocular movements and preservation of the consciousness. The EEG showed a projected disturbance possibly caused by a brain-stem lesion, that was confirmed by the CAT SCAN. Cerebral angiography showed high level of aterosclerosis. The lesion is located in the ventral part of the pons above the nucleus of the abducent nerve, without damaging the substantia reticularis of the mesencephalon and can be caused by thrombosis of the basilar artery

[Pathophysiological aspects of the brain stem in closed head injuries (author's transl)].

In a case of severe head injury, there is a disturbance of the functional cycle between hypothalamus/mesencephalon and the cortex cerebri. In this article, the causes and the pathophysiological, functional disturbances of primary and secondary unconsciousness will be discussed. In a case of a posttraumatic intracranial hypertension, the following causes are to be considered: cerebral oedema, intracerebral haematomas and the so-called pneumatocephalus: the collection of air in the ventricle system when open head injuries of the base of the skull occur. The midbrain syndrome which is caused by t

Distribution of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) immunoreactivity in the brain of the zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The distribution of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in the brain of the adult zebrafish was studied with immunohistochemical techniques. In the telencephalon, abundant TRH-immunoreactive (TRHir) neurons were observed in the central, ventral, and supra- and postcommissural regions of the ventral telencephalic area. In the diencephalon, TRHir neurons were observed in the anterior parvocellular preoptic nucleus, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the lateral hypothalamic nucleus, the rostral parts of the anterior tuberal nucleus and torus lateralis, and the posterior tuberal nucleus. Some TRHir neu

Artery of Percheron Stroke as an Unusual Cause of Hypersomnia: A Case Series and a Short Literature Review.

The thalamus and the mesencephalon have a complex blood supply. The artery of Percheron (AOP) is a rare anatomical variant. Occlusion of this artery may lead to bithalamic stroke with or without midbrain involvement. Given its broad spectrum of clinical features, AOP stroke is often misdiagnosed. Usually, it manifests with the triad of vertical gaze palsy, memory impairment, and coma. In this article, we report three cases of bilateral thalamic strokes whose clinical presentations were dominated by a sudden onset of hypersomnia. We also reviewed last 5 years' publications related to the AOP st

A new neurocutaneous syndrome possibly related to Ota's nevus.

The case of a 42-year-old Sudanese man is reported who had developed hyperpigmentation of the left face and rapidly progressive right hemiparesis followed by myoclonus at the age of 30. Blue-grey hyperpigmentation was noted in the territory of the left ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular trigeminal nerve branches, with alopecia of the right face and axilla. CT of the brain revealed left-sided paraventricular calcifications and MRI showed atrophy of the left cerebral hemisphere and mesencephalon, a calcified haemangioma in the left basal ganglia, an old infarct in the right central pons, and c

A Sleep-Specific Midbrain Target for Sevoflurane Anesthesia.

Sevoflurane has been the most widely used inhaled anesthetics with a favorable recovery profile; however, the precise mechanisms underlying its anesthetic action are still not completely understood. Here the authors show that sevoflurane activates a cluster of urocortin 1 (UCN1+ )/cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART+ ) neurons in the midbrain involved in its anesthesia. Furthermore, growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) is highly enriched in sevoflurane-activated UCN1+ /CART+ cells and is necessary for sleep induction. Blockade of GHSR abolishes the excitatory effect of s

Three-Dimensional Quantitative Analysis of the Brainstem Safe Entry Zones Based on Internal Structures.

OBJECTIVE: Brainstem safe entry zones (EZs) are gates to access the intrinsic pathology of the brainstem. We performed a quantitative analysis of the intrinsic surgical corridor limits of the most commonly used EZs and illustrated these through an inside perspective using 2-dimensional photographs, 3-dimensional photographs, and interactive 3-dimensional model reconstructions. METHODS: A total of 26 human brainstems (52 sides) with the cerebellum attached were prepared using the Klingler method and dissected. The safe working areas and distances for each EZ were defined according to the eloqu

Regionally Impaired Redox Homeostasis in the Brain of Rats Subjected to Global Perinatal Asphyxia: Sustained Effect up to 14 Postnatal Days.

The present report evaluates the effect of global perinatal asphyxia on several parameters of oxidative stress and cell viability in rat brain tissue sampled at an extended neonatal period up to 14 days, a period characterised by intensive neuritogenesis, synaptogenesis, synaptic consolidation, pruning and delayed cell death. Perinatal asphyxia was induced by immersing foetus-containing uterine horns removed by a caesarean section from on term rat dams into a water bath at 37 °C for 21 min. Asphyxia-exposed and sibling caesarean-delivered foetuses were manually resucitated and nurtured by surr

Psychosis: a rare onset symptom of pediatric multiple sclerosis.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in multiple sclerosis (MS), but it is rarely associated with psychosis as the initial manifestation. Fourteen-year-old boy admitted with auditory hallucinations. His neurological examination was normal. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multiple demyelinating lesions in the mesencephalon and periventricular regions. His IgG index was high and the oligoclonal band was positive. MS was diagnosed and pulsed corticosteroids were given and his psychotic symptoms regressed. After 22months, the patient presented with hemi-hypoesthesia, and repeated MRI

Expression pattern of TG-interacting factor 2 during mouse development.

TGIF2 is a close homologue of TGIF that functions as a transcriptional corepressor by interaction with transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta)-activated Smads. Mutations of TGIF have been found in holoprosencephaly, a genetic disease affecting forebrain and craniofacial developmental. Here we analyzed the expression pattern of TGIF2 during mouse embryogenesis. Expression of TGIF2 transcripts was detected at high level at E12.5 and E15.5 in the nervous system including neopallial cortex, mesencephalon, metencephalon, medulla oblongata, spinal cord, trigeminal ganglion, vestibulocochlear gang
