Mesenteric pseudocyst of the transverse colon: unusual presentation of more common pathology.

A 72-year-old man presented to the hospital with a cyst in the abdominal cavity as the main finding obtained by abdominal CT. The cyst measured 13.5×9 cm and was located near the proximal wall of the body of the stomach. Endoscopic ultrasonography revealed that, the size of the cyst was 8.6×8.8 cm and that most of it was anechoic. However, partially heterogeneous and hypoechoic solid portions and a septum were detected. This cystic lesion was separated from the stomach wall and pancreas. Surgical resection was performed. The final histopathological test results showed that the cystic mass orig

Pseudoascites: report of three cases.

Giant intra-abdominal cysts masquerading as ascites are rare. We present three cases with giant intra-abdominal cysts (one mesenteric cyst, two ovarian) that were initially misdiagnosed as refractory ascites in another hospital. On ultrasound examination, displacement of bowel loops to outside the fluid without dispersion of fluid around the liver and spleen were the main findings suggesting the possibility of giant intra-abdominal cysts in our patients. In all three patients, the diagnosis of giant intra-abdominal cysts was confirmed after their total excision. Clinicians must consider proces…

A giant lymphatic cyst of the transverse colon mesentery.

Mesenteric cysts are not uncommon in pediatric age group but giant lymphatic cysts of mesentery are reported infrequently. This is a report of six years old female who had vague abdominal pain with distension for two years. Investigations revealed a large cystic mass in abdomen. On exploration a giant lymphatic cyst in the mesentery of transverse colon found. More than 1500 ml of milky fluid was drained. The cyst was unilocular and appeared to be the collection of lymph (chyle) between two leaves of the mesentery of transverse colon. It is postulated that trauma to or malformation of lymphatic…

[Multiple hydatidosis: hepatic, splenic, peritoneal and gynaecologic locations (author's transl)].

We report the case of a young Algerian female with a voluminous abdominal tumour suggestive of a hydatic cyst of the liver. Complementary examinations (radiography of adjacent organs, ultrasonography, coelio-mesenteric arteriography, hepatic scanning) revealed two additional abdominal cysts. Furthermore, gynaecologic examination and ultrasonography revealed one intra-uterine hydatic cyst. At laparotomy however, the surgeon removed sixteen abdominal and five pelvic cysts, all of them containing brood capsules. It should be noted that one eleven centimeters-diameter splenic cyst was discovered o

Segmental Dilatation of Ileum Involving Bronchogenic Cyst in a Newborn.

Objective: Congenital segmental intestinal dilatation (SID) and bronchogenic cyst in the abdomen are two uncommon and different pathologies. We report a bronchogenic cyst associated with segmental intestinal dilatation. Case: A 2-day-old 3300 g term infant developed bilious vomiting. A jejunoileal segment with a diameter of 10 cm was detected at surgery. Histologically, the wall musculature and enteric plexus of the segmentally enlarged small intestine stained normally for CD117 and negative for calretinin. A bronchogenic cyst of 3 cm in diameter was centered on the mesenteric border of the di

[Unusual cause of acute abdomen in childhood. Cystic fibrolymphangioma of the mesentery].

Cystic fibrolymphangioma of the mesentery as an unusual cause of acute abdomen in infancy is described. This form is one of the many mesenteric cysts whose pathogenesis has not yet been established. Preoperative diagnosis of such cysts is very difficult, and there are very few cases in which a close study has been possible in the light of clinical suspicion. Intraoperative diagnosis is the most likely, therefore, though there are cases - such as that reported here - in which surgery is indicated to remedy the occlusion caused by the cyst, and not because a swelling has been noted on clinical e…

Toxoplasma gondii: kinetics of the dissemination in the host tissues during the acute phase of infection of mice and rats.

Mice and rats differ in their susceptibility to Toxoplasma gondii infection. Here we have compared the parasitological parameters of acute infection in both mice and rats infected either orally with cysts of Prugniaud strain or intraperitoneally (ip) with tachyzoites of the RH strain. The animals were killed at regular interval during the acute phase, and the parasitic burden in mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen, liver, diaphragm, heart, lungs, brain, and blood was assessed by a tissue culture method in MRC5 fibroblast cells. Mice infected with the RH strain showed a drastic increase of the paras

Newborn intraabdominal cystic lymphatic malformations.

Cystic lymphatic malformations are rare causes of abdominal masses in the newborn. Also known as mesenteric, omental, or retroperitoneal cysts, they can present in a variety of ways including, intestinal obstruction, volvulus, nonspecific abdominal pain, intracystic hemorrhage, or as an asymptomatic abdominal mass. Abdominal ultrasound scan provides a definitive diagnosis in most suspected cases. Complete resection is possible in most patients except those with extensive retroperitoneal involvement. Recurrence is unusual when complete resection is accomplished. Because most case series with co

An unusual presentation of acute abdomen: infarcted peritoneal cyst-a probable asbestos-related benign cystic mesothelioma.

This is a report of a rare case of an infarcted pelvic intra-abdominal cyst, having no mesenteric connection presenting as an acute abdomen. The patient had significant asbestos exposure. The cyst was treated successfully by surgical excision. Histopathology showed an infarcted cyst; the lining was destroyed, precluding marker studies. A diagnosis of benign cystic peritoneal mesothelioma (BCPM) was made by excluding other causes of solitary pelvic intra-abdominal cysts. BCPM has been classified as an asbestos-related neoplasm and is usually seen in the pelvis adjunct to the urinary bladder. On

Ultrasonography of intra-abdominal cystic lesions in the newborn.

Intra-abdominal cystic lesions are increasingly recognized in the newborn because of the advent of routine antenatal ultrasonography. As these lesions are often asymptomatic or non-specific in clinical presentation in the newborn, imaging by ultrasonography has an important role in diagnosis. We present a pictorial review of the commonly encountered intra-abdominal cystic lesions in the newborn, with emphasis on ultrasonographic features that can aid differentiation between the various lesions.

[Extraintestinal finding of Isospora belli unizoic cysts in a patient with AIDS: case report].

This report describes the presence of Isospora belli unizoic cysts in mesenteric lymph nodes and of gametocytes in the gallbladder epitelium of a 26 year-old Brazilian male patient with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. This patient had received treatment for several times with sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. It is discussed the significance of I. belli tissue cysts as possible foci of resistance of the parasite and their association with the infection relapse even post-treatment with anticoccidian medication.

Mesenteric pseudocyst of the sigmoid colon.

A 31-year-old woman with right lower abdominal pain was hospitalized. Palpation revealed both tenderness and rebound tenderness in the right lower quadrant of her abdomen. Abdominal ultrasonography (US) indicated a multilocular cystic mass on the right side of the pelvic area, and a computed tomography (CT) scan showed a low-density mass measuring 7 cm in diameter. Torsion of the pedicle of a right ovarian cyst was suspected, and emergency laparotomy was performed. At operation, however, the uterus and both ovaries appeared normal, and exploration revealed a yellow-reddish cystic mass, approxi

Imaging diagnosis of a giant choledochal cyst in an infant.

The usual etiologies of giant abdominal cystic masses in infants are mesenteric cyst, enteric duplication cyst, ovarian cyst in females, cystic lymphangioma, however, the presentation of a choledochal cyst in a gigantic form, is unusual. The primary modality for diagnosis of this entity is ultrasound, followed by MRI. The characteristic ultrasound features of a choledochal cyst are a well-defined cystic lesion which may be found to replace any segment of the biliary tree and is distinctly separate from the gallbladder. The associated anomalies are biliary atresia, gallbladder atresia, hepatic …

Intact Excision of a Mesenteric Pseudocyst.

Mesenteric cysts are detected in all age groups with almost equal incidence in both genders. Although a rare abdominal growth, it is commonly found in the fifth to seventh decades of life. These are mostly small (asymptomatic) with a 3% chance of malignant transformation. With the increase in the size of the cyst, nonspecific complaints of abdominal pain, distention, discomfort, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, constipation, or diarrhea may develop. Owing to the varied presentation and lack of pathognomonic clinical, laboratory, or imaging findings, these are difficult to diagnose. The subtype me…

Primary peritoneal, omental, and mesenteric tumors in childhood.

Of 21 primary peritoneal, omental, and mesenteric tumors, 14 were cysts and seven were solid. Most of the cysts were omental-mesenteric lymphangiomas; the sole exception was a cystic mesothelioma in a newborn. The solid tumors included three multicentric hamartomas, three sarcomas of undetermined histogenesis, and one immature teratoma. Since cystic lymphangiomas carry a good prognosis following surgical excision, they must be distinguished from cysts of mesothelial origin. Solid hamartomas may simulate malignant tumors because of multicentricity and immature tissue composition. Although perit

Mesenteric Meckel's Diverticulum as a Missed Diagnosis in a Child With Recurrent Rectal Bleeding: A Report of a Challenging Case.

Meckel's diverticulum is a common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract and is a remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct. One of the classical identification and diagnostic criteria of Meckel's diverticulum is its location along the anti-mesenteric border of the ileum. Mesenteric Meckel's diverticulum (MMD) is an unexpected occurrence, rarely reported, with confounding diagnostic tests due to the atypical location, often forming a gray zone in diagnosis due to its similarity to an enteric duplication cyst. A 1.5-year-old male child presented to the pediatric surgery outpatient departm
