Occupational exposure to metals and prostate cancer: CAPLIFE study.

Few studies have explored the association between occupational metal exposure and prostate cancer (PCa), without considering combined effects and tumor characteristics. The aim is to analyze the potential individual and joint exposure to occupational metals on PCa risk, considering tumor aggressiveness and stage. CAPLIFE is a case-control study that included 464 cases and 428 controls. Lifetime occupational exposure to chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), and lead (Pb) was estimated using the Spanish job-exposure matrix (MatEmESp). Metal exposure was defined as: i) ever vs. never exposure; i…

Full-Scaling Friction and Wear Laws of Nanotwinned Metals.

Ultrastrong nanotwinned (NT) metals hold promise for mitigating friction and wear-essential for enhancing the energy efficiency and longevity of all moving systems. However, optimizing their tribological performance has long suffered from the absence of friction and wear laws across varying tribological loading scales. Here, we have discovered full-scaling twin lamella spacing (λ)-dependent friction and wear laws in NT pure nickel and identified critical deformation mechanisms for reducing friction and wear. Nanoscale friction initially increases with decreasing λ, peaking at 20 nm, and then d…

Tracing the threads: How toxic metals contribute to neurodegeneration.

Brain disorders affect more than one in three people globally, representing a leading cause of disability and morbidity. While the etiology of several of these disorders remains elusive, it is increasingly evident that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to their onset and progression. Given the persistent effects of environmental exposures on biological systems, this review highlights the role of heavy metals (particularly lead, mercury, vanadium, and chromium) in altering behaviour and contributing to the development of neurodegenerative and demyelinating diseases, such as Alzh…

Surface stress can initiate environment-assisted fracture in metals.

Controlling environmental effects in surface plasticity/fracture of metals is of interest for areas as diverse as manufacturing processes, product performance, and structural safety. The key to controlling these effects is understanding the effect of adsorbates on surface energy (γ) and surface stress (f). While γ has been well studied, the role of surface stress has received much less attention. We characterize surface stress induced in metals by adsorption of organic monolayers. Linear alkanoic acids of varying chain length (3-18) are deposited by molecular self-assembly onto one side of an …

Iron Deficiency and Nephrotoxic Heavy Metals: A Dangerous Interplay?

Heavy metals are common in our environment, and all individuals are exposed to them to some extent. These toxic metals have several harmful effects on the body, including the kidney, which is a very sensitive organ. Indeed, heavy metal exposure has been linked to an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its progression, which may be explained by the well-established nephrotoxic effects of these metals. In this hypothesis and narrative literature review, we will shed light on the potential role that another highly common problem in patients with CKD, iron deficiency, may play in th…

Mixed metals exposure and cognitive function in Bangladeshi adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Over 57 million people in Bangladesh have been chronically exposed to arsenic-contaminated drinking water. They also face environmental exposure to elevated levels of cadmium (Cd), manganese (Mn), and lead (Pb), all of which have been previously observed in environmental and biological samples for this population. These metals have been linked to adverse neurocognitive outcomes in adults and children, though their effects on adolescents are not yet fully characterized. Additionally, previous studies have linked selenium (Se) to protective effects against the toxicity of these other…

Battle for Metals: Regulatory RNAs at the Front Line.

Metal such as iron, zinc, manganese, and nickel are essential elements for bacteria. These nutrients are required in crucial structural and catalytic roles in biological processes, including precursor biosynthesis, DNA replication, transcription, respiration, and oxidative stress responses. While essential, in excess these nutrients can also be toxic. The immune system leverages both of these facets, to limit bacterial proliferation and combat invaders. Metal binding immune proteins reduce the bioavailability of metals at the infection sites starving intruders, while immune cells intoxicate pa…

Adhesive bonding of noble metals with a thiohydantoin primer.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of an experimental primer containing acetone solution and a sulfur-containing functional monomer, 10-methacryloyloxydecyl-(2-thiohydantoin-4-yl)propionate (MDTHP), on the bonds between noble metals and acrylic resin. METHODS: The experimental primer used as the control for comparison consisted of 6-(4-vinylbenzyl-n-propyl)amino-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithione (VBATDT) in acetone. These primers were prepared as equimolar functional monomers (0.1 mol%). A self-polymerizing acrylic resin initiated with tri-n-butylborane (TBB) was used as…

[Heavy metals in the enviroment: Guillain-Barre like syndrome].

Guillain-Barré syndrome is an entity of diverse etiology, characterized by acute, symmetric, ascending and progressive muscle weakness, being one of the most frequent acquired polyneuropathies in childhood. Neuropathies produced by heavy metals, mercury and lead, and metalloids, such as arsenic, organophosphorus pesticides and carbon tetrachloride, should be considered among the differential diagnoses. We present a 14-year-old patient with a presumptive diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome without response to conventional treatment with gamma globulin. Considering other etiologies, heavy metal…

Circulating Multiple Metals and Incident Stroke in Chinese Adults.

Background and Purpose- Circulating metals synchronously reflect multiple metal exposures from both natural and anthropogenic sources, which may be linked with the risk of stroke. However, there is a lack of prospective studies investigating the associations of multiple metal exposures with incident stroke. Methods- We performed a nested case-control study within the ongoing Dongfeng-Tongji cohort launched in 2008. A total of 1304 incident stroke cases (1035 ischemic strokes and 269 hemorrhagic strokes) were prospectively identified by December 31, 2016, and matched to incident identity sample…

Endocrine active metals, prenatal stress and enhanced neurobehavioral disruption.

Metals, including lead (Pb), methylmercury (MeHg) and arsenic (As), are long-known developmental neurotoxicants. More recently, environmental context has been recognized to modulate metals toxicity, including nutritional state and stress exposure. Modulation of metal toxicity by stress exposure can occur through shared targeting of endocrine systems, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA). Our previous rodent research has identified that prenatal stress (PS) modulates neurotoxicity of two endocrine active metals (EAMs), Pb and MeHg, by altering HPA and CNS systems disrupting beh…

Dietary compounds as modulators of metals and metalloids toxicity.

A large part of the population is exposed to metals and metalloids through the diet. Most of the in vivo studies on its toxicokinetics and toxicity are conducted by means of exposure through drinking water or by intragastric or intraperitoneal administration of aqueous standards, and therefore they do not consider the effect of the food matrix on the exposure. Numerous studies show that some components of the diet can modulate the toxicity of these food contaminants, reducing their effect on a systemic level. Part of this protective role may be due to a reduction of intestinal absorption and s…

Blood levels of trace metals and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Some trace metals may increase risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), whereas others may be beneficial. Our goal was to examine associations of ALS with blood levels of selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn). We conducted a case-control study of 163 neurologist confirmed patients from the National Registry of Veterans with ALS and 229 frequency-matched veteran controls. We measured metal levels in blood using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between ALS and a doubling of met…

Interactions of metals and Apolipoprotein E in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, which is characterized by the neuropathological accumulation of extracellular amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). Clinically, patients will endure a gradual erosion of memory and other higher order cognitive functions. Whilst the underlying etiology of the disease remains to be definitively identified, a body of work has developed over the last two decades demonstrating that AD plasma/serum and brain are characterized by a dyshomeostasis in a number of metal ions. Furthermore, these metals (such as zinc…

Perspectives in endocrine toxicity of heavy metals--a review.

An attempt has been made to review the endocrine/hormonal implications of a few environmentally significant metals, viz, lead, mercury, cadmium, copper, arsenic and nickel, in man and animals. Special emphasis has been given to the adrenals, thyroid, testis, ovary and pancreas. Toxic metals can cause structural and functional changes in the adrenal glands. Their effects on steroidogenesis have been reviewed. It has been reported that thyroid hormone kinetics are affected by a number of metallic compounds. Occupational exposure to a few of these metals can cause testicular injury and sex hormon…
