Impact of minority stress in depressive symptoms, suicide ideation and suicide attempt in trans persons.

Minority stress comprehends the relationship between prejudice (perceived, anticipated and internalized) and mental health in people belonging to minority groups, as well as protective factors for stressors. This study evaluated the prevalence of depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation and attempted suicide in Brazilian trans people, and it`s relationship with minority stress, passability, social support and trans identity support. 378 people participated through a questionnaire answered online and in the hospital services they attended. Of these, 67.20% had depressive symptoms, 67.72% suicidal…

Internalizing Symptoms, Alcohol Use, and Protective Behavioral Strategies: Associations with Regretted Sexual Experiences of College Students.

One of the most pervasive forms of regret, often connected to alcohol use, is sexual regret. Lifetime rates of regretted sexual experiences (RSE) for college students is between 29%-71.9%, with 31.8% endorsing past year RSE and 31.7% stating alcohol negatively influenced decision making. While past research has focused on psychological symptoms following sexual assault, psychological effects and subsequent outcomes of RSE remains under-studied. Whether a history of sexual regret is associated with mental health symptoms, alcohol use, and protective behavioral strategy (PBS) use in the past mon

"Missing minorities" in blood donation: Rethinking blood procurement in Europe as a citizenship regime.

Although European blood collection organizations are currently obtaining sufficient and safe blood from the majority population, they report having difficulty recruiting first and second-generation immigrants from non-European countries. Most existing studies on these underrepresented groups, who have been coined the "missing minorities" in blood donation, have adopted an instrumental approach that focuses on the development of targeted recruitment strategies to overcome specific barriers to donation faced by members of these minorities. Although this approach does offer several short-term ben

Racial/Ethnic and Socioeconomic Disparities in Adult Vaccination Coverage.

INTRODUCTION: Adults from racial and ethnic minorities and low-income groups are disproportionately affected by vaccine-preventable diseases. The objective of this study is to examine the trends in adult vaccination coverage in the U.S. by race/ethnicity and SES from 2010 to 2019. METHODS: Temporal trends in influenza; pneumococcal; herpes zoster; and tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis vaccination coverage were examined by race/ethnicity and SES in 2020 using the National Health Interview Surveys from 2010 to 2019. RESULTS: Influenza vaccination coverage differed by race/ethnicity

How will the 'cancer moonshot' impact health disparities?

In 1971, President Nixon signed into law the National Cancer Act (NCA), colloquially known as the "War on Cancer", which pushed cancer onto the national agenda and is credited for many subsequent increases in the knowledge of the molecular, cellular, and genetic causes and effects of cancer. But even though cancer mortality has declined overall in intervening years after the NCA, cancer health disparities persist in the form of higher cancer incidence and mortality rates among certain cancer types and certain populations. Breast and cervical cancers disproportionately affect African American,

Social Participation in Community Dwelling Minority Stroke Survivors: Decolonizing Research.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Minority stroke survivors experience difficulties in access to rehabilitation due to a combination of systemic factors; lack of understanding of their cultural beliefs by health professionals; their colonial thinking and experiences; and they are underrepresented in social participation research. To address the disparity, this paper discusses how research on social participation of community dwelling minority stroke survivors could embrace decolonization. RECENT FINDINGS: Decolonization of research in social participation can be achieved when minority stroke survivors are e

Model Minority and Its Discontents.

Model Minority expectations for Asian Americans have been in circulation for more than seven decades, and their grip on the Asian American psyche endures to the present day. In previous papers, the author addressed Asian American compliance with these expectations as a trauma-based, identifying-with-aggressor adaptation to the anti-Asian racism in American society: Reeling from the long history of racial discrimination that culminated in the incarceration of 120,000 individuals of Japanese origin during WWII, Asian Americans embraced compliance and model citizenship as a way of survival. Mental health among Sweden Finns: A systematic scoping review.

Sweden Finns are one of five officially recognized national minority groups in Sweden. As a group, Sweden Finns have been socioeconomically underprivileged in comparison with the Swedish majority population, and tend to be worse off in terms of somatic health. However, the literature on mental health among Sweden Finns has not previously been systematically appraised. The aim of this scoping review was to synthesize the available evidence on mental health among Sweden Finns or, when the minority terminology is not used in the literature, among individuals in Sweden with a Finnish background (i…

Improving models for student retention and graduation using Markov chains.

Graduation rates are a key measure of the long-term efficacy of academic interventions. However, challenges to using traditional estimates of graduation rates for underrepresented students include inherently small sample sizes and high data requirements. Here, we show that a Markov model increases confidence and reduces biases in estimated graduation rates for underrepresented minority and first-generation students. We use a Learning Assistant program to demonstrate the Markov model's strength for assessing program efficacy. We find that Learning Assistants in gateway science courses are assoc

Beyond Residence: A Mobility-based Approach for Improved Evaluation of Human Exposure to Environmental Hazards.

Standard environmental hazard exposure assessment methods have been primarily based on residential places, neglecting individuals' hazard exposures due to activities outside home neighborhood and underestimating peoples' overall hazard exposures. To address this limitation, this study proposes a novel mobility-based index for the hazard exposure evaluation. Using large-scale human mobility data, we quantify the extent of population dwell time in high environmental hazard places in 239 US counties for three environmental hazards. We explore how human mobility extends the reach of environmental

The ethnic density effect as a contextual influence in ecological disease models: Establishing its quantitative expression.

Research suggests higher neighbourhood ethnic minority density to be associated with lessened chances of ethnic group illness. We focus on the density effect on psychosis, arguing that (at higher ethnic concentrations) it acts as a contextual influence attenuating the compositional influence whereby minority ethnicity is associated with higher psychosis risk. In terms of ecological disease regression, the ethnic density effect will then be apparent in nonlinear impacts of minority concentration. Contextual effects may also be evident in spatially varying regression coefficient models for psych

Improving Graduate-School Admissions by Expanding Rather Than Eliminating Predictors.

The article by Woo et al. (this issue) reviews the existing research on graduate-school admissions measures. The goal of this commentary is to expand on their review and suggest several ways of supplementing the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to both increase the predictive validity of admissions decisions and improve the diversity of a graduate program. We rely on several decades of research to suggest assessing both conscientiousness and vocational interests and combining the scores from these predictors with the GRE to inform admissions decisions. In addition, we also propose several way

New directions for racial discrimination research as inspired by the integrative model.

In 1996, Cynthia García Coll and colleagues introduced a groundbreaking model that articulated factors that influenced the development of ethnic-racial minority and immigrant youth. One of the key arguments was that racial discrimination is a stratification mechanism resulting in negative developmental outcomes for minority youth, and this argument has been supported by several meta-analyses. Against the backdrop of the rise of White nationalism, increasing hate crimes against ethnic-racial minority individuals, implementation of national policies that disproportionately affect communities of

The State of Ethnic Dermatology in Canada.

Approximately 30% of Canadians will be members of a visible minority by 2031. When dermatology became an independent medical discipline in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, most residents of Canada and the United States were of Northern European descent. Morphology and descriptions of dermatoses are based on patients with light skin. Skin of colour dermatology refers to a unique field in dermatology dedicated to the diagnosis and management of disorders that are more prevalent in patients with moderately to richly pigmented skin. Important differences in the presentation of common dermat

A Novel Adaptation of Peer Health Navigation and Contingency Management for Advancement Along the HIV Care Continuum Among Transgender Women of Color.

Transgender women, particularly racial/ethnic minority transgender women, evidence disproportionately high rates of untreated HIV infection and disproportionately low rates of HIV viral suppression. The Alexis Project was a combined peer health navigation (PHN) and contingency management (CM) intervention that targeted HIV milestones associated with advancement along the HIV care continuum. From February 2014 through August 2016, 139 transgender women of color (TWOC) enrolled and received unlimited PHN sessions and an escalating CM rewards schedule for confirmed achievement of both behavioral

Racial and ethnic disparities in assisted reproductive technology: a systematic review.

There is emergent scientific literature examining the disparities in reproductive care of women in the United States. Reproduction is a basic human right and there are unique challenges that racial and ethnic minorities face in accessing fertility care and assisted reproductive technology. The identification of these disparities can aid in identifying areas for interventions to improve and resolve, the inequities that exist in providing care for minority populations. A literature search was performed using PubMed to identify articles with data specific to racial and ethnic differences in study

HIV/AIDS: a minority health issue.

HIV infection among racial and ethnic minorities is an ongoing health crisis. The disproportionate impact of HIV infection on racial and ethnic minorities has affected communities already struggling with many social and economic challenges, such as poverty, substance abuse, homelessness, unequal access to health care, and unequal treatment once in the health care system. Superimposed on these challenges is HIV infection, the transmission of which is facilitated by many of these factors. Although the epidemic is disproportionately affecting all racial and ethnic minorities, within these minority

On the Relationship Between Online Heterosexist Discrimination and Mental Health and Substance Use Among LGBTQ+ Young Adults.

LGBTQ+ individuals experience disproportionately higher rates of mental health and substance use difficulties. Discrimination is a significant factor in explaining these disparities. Meyer's (2003) minority stress theory (MST) indicates that proximal group-specific processes mediate the relationship between discrimination and health outcomes, with the effects moderated by other social factors. However, online discrimination has been understudied among LGBTQ+  people. Focusing on LGBTQ+  young adults experiencing online heterosexist discrimination (OHD), the current study aimed to investigate t
