BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of medication use among persons with mobility limitations, there are currently no patient-reported measures that have been co-developed to assess the experiences of medications in everyday life. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop potential items for a patient-reported experience measure related to medication use for adults with mobility limitations.
METHODS: We conducted a concept mapping study with people with mobility limitations. Participants were required to: be 18 years of age or older, live in Canada, live in the community, spea

OBJECTIVES: This study identifies differences in unmet mobility needs among older adults living in rural versus urban areas.
METHODS: We used data from Round 9 of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), limiting our analyses to respondents who had not moved since baseline (average housing tenure of 27 years; n = 3343). We conducted bivariate and multivariate analyses to detect rural/urban differences in unmet mobility needs, adjusting for socio-demographics, health status, and housing characteristics.
RESULTS: Rural residence was associated with higher odds of any unmet mobility

Our study aimed to compare the impact of zoledronic acid and whole-body vibration (WBV) as a non-pharmacological method of treatment for early obesity/immobility-related osteoporosis in male rat models. In total, 36 male Wistar rats were assigned to the following groups: obese control with immobility (Control, n = 12) and two experimental groups (n = 12 each), including obese and immobile rats subjected to whole-body vibration with an acceleration level of 3 m/s2 g (obesity and immobility + WBV) and obese and immobile rats that received an intramuscular injection of zoledronic acid at a dose o

To identify potentially modifiable risk-factors in the age-related disablement process, we examined the association between change in mobility limitations and multimorbidity and how dietary quality moderates this association. Information from 3320 adults aged 65 and older in 2012 was drawn from the Health and Retirement Study and the Health Care and Nutrition Study. Mobility limitations reported in 2012 and change in mobility limitations from 2012 to 2014 were regressed on multimorbidity measured as number of chronic conditions in 2012, dietary quality measured in 2013 using the Alternative He

BACKGROUND: Policy makers need disability projections for planning adequate services and measures for health promotion. The aim of this study is to provide projections on severe mobility limitations up to year 2044 and illustrate how the projected prevalence and the number of persons with severe mobility limitations are affected by potential changes in the modifiable risk factors, namely excess weight, physical inactivity and smoking.
METHODS: We analysed the nationally representative, repeated measures Health 2000 and 2011 Surveys (BRIF8901) with 8615 and 6740 participants, respectively, age

AIM: Limited joint mobility (LJM) of hand, which is one of a complication of diabetic hand, has a close association with diabetic microangiopathy. However, it remains to be elucidated about the relationships between LJM of hand and subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study to evaluate the relationships between LJM of hand and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaque score in patients with type 2 diabetes.
METHODS: We evaluated the relationships between LJM of hand, and carotid IMT and plaque score, evaluated by carotid

Compared to aerobic-based physical activity, less research has evaluated the effects of muscle-strengthening physical activity (MSPA) on mortality. Additionally, limited research has evaluated this among adults with mobility limitations, which was this study's purpose. Data from the 2003-2006 NHANES, with follow-up through 2011, were used (analyzed in 2016). MSPA was assessed via self-report, with all-cause, CVD-specific, and cancer-specific mortality assessed as the outcome variables. Analyses were limited to adults with mobility limitations (N=1411), assessed via a validated questionnaire. A

Background The current standard to gradually adapt the fragile perfusion in lower extremity free flaps to an upright posture is the dangling maneuver. This type of flap training neither fits the orthostatic target load of an upright posture, nor does it assist in mobilizing the patients effectively. In this study, we quantitatively analyzed training effects of an early and full mobilization on flap perfusion. Methods A total of 15 patients with gracilis flaps for distal lower extremity reconstruction were included. Flap training was performed daily by mobilizing the patients on a tilt table in

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia defined by lean mass has been inconsistently associated with disability in elders. Studies suggest that definitions should consider body size and additional influences of high fat mass (FM; sarcopenic-obesity). We examined sarcopenia accounting for body size, and sarcopenic-obesity, in relation to mobility limitations among 767 elderly men and women (mean age 79 years) from the Framingham Study.
METHODS: Whole-body dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry measured appendicular lean mass (ALM) and total FM in 1992-1995. Sarcopenia was defined in two ways: ALM/height squared (ALM

Fast exocytosis in melanotropic cells, activated by calcium entry through voltage-gated calcium channels, is very sensitive to mobile calcium buffers (complete block at 800 microM ethylene glycol bis(beta-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N'N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA)). This indicates that calcium diffuses a substantial distance from the channel to the vesicle. Surprisingly, 1, 2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (BAPTA), having a similar KD for calcium as EGTA but a approximately 100 times faster binding rate, blocked exocytosis only twice as effectively as EGTA. To examine the associations between cigarette smoking, connective tissue changes, and diabetic retinopathy, a detailed smoking history was elicited from 150 normotensive non-diabetic subjects, and from 266 randomly selected adult patients with Type 1 diabetes, after examination for limited joint mobility, Dupuytren's contracture, and diabetic retinopathy. Mean insulin dose and current glycosylated haemoglobin concentrations were comparable in diabetic smokers and non-smokers. The historical duration of smoking correlated with the duration of diabetes (r = 0.72, p less than 0.001). In diabetic
