Indicators associated with job morale of physicians in low- and middle-income countries during the COVID- 19 pandemic: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The COVID- 19 pandemic has placed immense strain on healthcare systems around the globe, with low- and middle-income countries facing unique challenges due to limited resources and fragile healthcare infrastructures. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to define the levels of four indicators of job morale (job motivation, job satisfaction, burnout, and depression symptoms) among physicians working in public healthcare settings in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: A comprehensive search of Scopus, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and grey lit…

Moral distress, resilience and human spirituality in the veterinary clinic.

The spiritual health of veterinarians is challenged by moral distress that expresses a conflict between personal core values and clinical practice. The morally resilient veterinarian experiences and addresses moral distress in constructive ways that express care for patients, owners, colleagues and society. As such, moral resilience is a positive aspect of spiritual health that can be built through reflections and dialogue on the ethical, existential, spiritual and religious questions raised by veterinary practice. Veterinarians often face complex moral dilemmas when attempting to balance the

Instances of Moral Distress in Medical Education: Recognition and Approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding and clarifying key concepts such as "knowledge sharing" is essential for advancing interprofessional collaboration and education in healthcare. This study aimed to analyze the concept of knowledge sharing in multidisciplinary surgical teams. METHODS: This is a qualitative study performed using Schwartz-Barcott and Kim's (2000) hybrid model of concept analysis, implemented in three stages: 1) theoretical, 2) fieldwork, and 3) final analysis. In the theoretical phase, a comprehensive literature review was analyzed through inductive content analysis. Along the fieldwo

[The rise of genetic therapies: urgent moral and societal questions].

Genetic therapies offer long-awaited hope for patients with rare genetic diseases and are emerging as cancer treatment as well. While these innovations appear promising, they are also extremely expensive and raise concerns about how they fit into an already overburdened healthcare system. What are the societal implications when these treatments become available? And how can we guide their adoption in the Dutch healthcare system in an ethically responsible manner? We describe the emerging landscape of genetic therapies, and specifically examine the ethical concerns surrounding their implementat

Surrogacy and the Moral Significance of Gestation: Reassessing Procreative Responsibilities.

Practices involving assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) presuppose the allocation of procreative responsibilities of various types and degrees among clinical embryologists, fertility doctors, and nonmedical individuals such as gamete bank staff and attorneys, while typically exempting them from parental rights and obligations. These individuals are appropriately regarded as third-party participants in assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures. Surrogates, however, engage in gestational labour which implies a sustained, embodied, and relational form of care fundamentally distinct

Moral injury in healthcare workers: An intervention to mitigate distress.

BackgroundThe psychological distress of individuals working in high-stakes, value-based environments (e.g., hospitals, nursing homes, and community health centers) is receiving growing recognition as moral injury (MI). While MI and other mental health challenges, like PTSD and burnout, have similarities and overlaps in symptoms, identification of these differences is essential, as the distinct needs of MI treatment require professionals to address its unique characteristics. Further, MI creates dual threats to healthcare operations, affecting workforce stability and individual psychological im

Hope as moral accompaniment: a framework for palliative care practice.

Growing evidence underscores the importance of hope in shaping patients' experiences. In the context of illness, hope regulates emotions, supports resilience, helps patients face uncertainty, and sustains the belief that life remains meaningful and worth living, even in adversity. While its relevance is well documented, very few approaches actively cultivate hope for its possible indirect therapeutic impact at a psycho-physical level. Among them, some positive psychology contributions seems to be particularly significant. Drawing on Snyder's model, hope is conceptualized as the combination of

Embryo Adoption and the Moral Object of Procreation in Catholic Theology.

Embryo adoption has emerged as one of the most contested questions in contemporary Catholic bioethics, arising from the widespread practice of embryo cryopreservation associated with in vitro fertilization. While the Church affirms without qualification the full dignity of every human embryo, it has not judged embryo adoption to be a morally licit response, and it states that the situation of abandoned embryos cannot be resolved through proposals of embryo transfer. This article argues that such restraint reflects moral coherence rather than indecision. Drawing on magisterial teaching, Thomist

Social interdependencies: the deep evolutionary roots of morality and normativity.

The conducting airways of the respiratory system play a crucial role in filtering, humidifying, and directing air into the lungs. Among the specialized cell types within these airways, airway serous cells are notable for their secretion of watery, protein-rich fluids and enzymes, which contribute to maintaining airway surface liquid homeostasis and defending against pathogens. However, the distribution and abundance of serous cells across different species in the conducting airways remain poorly understood. In this study, we addressed this gap by investigating the spatial distribution of the a

Reflective practice to reduce moral injury in healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI) can arise when individuals experience events that violate their moral beliefs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, MI gained attention among healthcare workers (HCWs). Reflective practice (RP) may help prevent or mitigate MI but remains underexplored. This narrative review examines existing literature on RP interventions addressing MI in HCWs. AIMS: To synthesize existing literature on RP interventions to prevent or mitigate MI in HCWs. METHODS: A semi-structured literature search was conducted in July 2024 and updated in August 2025 across four databases. Twelve stud

Experience and Contributing Factors of Moral Injury in Military Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Moral injury among military personnel is characterized by profound psychological, relational, and existential distress arising from experiences that violate deeply held moral values. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Moral injury may be accompanied by guilt, shame, social disconnection, and increased suicide risk, thereby threatening both individual well-being and military readiness. This qualitative meta-synthesis aimed to elucidate military personnel's experiences of moral injury and identify the factors contributing to its development, persistence, and recovery. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

The Thin End of the Wedge?: The Moral Puzzle of Anorexia Nervosa.

The practice of force-feeding dangerously malnourished patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) raises a puzzle for clinical ethics. Force-feeding AN patients may seem justified to save their lives and to help them recover from a debilitating pathological condition. Yet, clinical ethics seems committed to a robust anti-paternalism principle, on which it is normally wrong to force treatment on decisionally capacitated patients for their own good. Some AN patients do retain decisional capacity, at least by standard criteria. Thus, routinely force-feeding AN patients seems to constitute an unjustifiab

An Anesthesiologist's Moral Distress With Organ Procurement: A Narrative Review.

Organ procurement procedures have evolved significantly over the past decade, resulting in new moral uncertainties. The dead donor rule (DDR), a foundational principle, mandates that organ procurement occurs only after death is confirmed. However, developments such as donation after circulatory death (DCD) and normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) have raised ethical issues, creating moral distress and moral injury among anesthesiologists. This review highlights the recent changes in the organ procurement processes and the potential impact on anesthesiologists and also discusses the strategies

Morally offensive scientific findings activate cognitive chicanery.

We document a mutually reinforcing set of belief-system defenses-cognitive chicanery-that transform "morally wrong" scientific claims into "empirically wrong" claims. Five experiments (four preregistered, N = 7040) show that when participants read identical abstracts that varied only in the sociomoral desirability of the conclusions, morally offended participants were likelier to (1) dismiss the writing as incomprehensible (motivated confusion); (2) deny the empirical status of the research question (motivated postmodernism); (3) endorse claims inspired by Schopenhauer's stratagems (The Art of
