The first estimation of the heterozygous carrier rates for the SMN1 gene deletions and SMN2 gene duplications in populations of Russia has been performed. Results of microbiological monitoring for serogroup A Neisseria meningitidis circulated in Moscow from 2002 to 2006 are presented. Using multilocus sequence-typing, molecular and epidemiologic characteristics of 32 cultures isolated from cerebro-spinal fluid of patients with generalized forms of meningococcal infection. 4908 autopsy protocols were analysed and liver pathology was found in 1.7% of cases. Alcoholic and viral diseases dominated among liver pathology cases, steatosis among alcoholic damages, cirrhosis among viral diseases, primary biliary cirrhosis among autoimmune diseases and hepatocellular carcinoma among malignant tumors. Comparison of the two decades (1988-1997 and 1978-1987) revealed certain growth of alcoholic and viral diseases and their possible combinations. The number of liver tumors of viral etiology also went up.

The genetics of resistance to the Moscow strain of ectromelia virus was examined in crosses derived from resistant C57BL/6 (B6) and susceptible DBA/2 (D2) mice. Infection with 10(1) to 10(5) PFU of virus resulted in mortalities of 90 to 100% of D2, 0% of B6 and 0 to 3% of (B6 x D2) F1 mice by day 21. Comparative studies of tissue culture and dermal smallpox vaccines were carried out in a strictly controlled coded trial by revaccination of adults by scarification. Two lots of tissue culture and one lot of dermal vaccines with a similar infectious titer (8.0 lg PFU/ml) were used. All the lots tested "took" in 100%. The prognostic significance of genetic lesions in T-cell ALL still needs to be elucidated. Karyotyping and FISH were performed in samples from 120 patients with T-cell ALL registered in the trial Moscow-Berlin 2008. Anal human papillomavirus (HPV) is prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM), but has not been studied in the Russian Federation. A cross-sectional survey and HPV genotyping were conducted among HIV seropositive (n=58) and seronegative MSM (n=65)in Moscow. The article presents a molecular genetic study of genomes of field isolates of rabies virus isolated in the Vladimir, Moscow, Tver, Nizhny Novgorod and Ryazan regions, with the aim of carrying out phylogenetic analysis.
