Motion sickness: an evolutionary hypothesis.

Since the occurrence of vomiting as a response to motion is both widespread and apparently disadvantageous, it presents a problem for evolutionary theory. An hypothesis is proposed suggesting that motion sickness is triggered by difficulties which arise in the programming of movements of the eyes or head when the relations between the spatial frameworks defined by the visual, vestibular, or proprioceptive inputs are repeatedly and unpredictably perturbed. Such perturbations may be produced by certain types of motion, or by disturbances in sensory input or motor control produced by ingested tox…

Postural behaviour and motion sickness.

One of the acting techniques used in Kyogen, a classical Japanese stage comedy, prompted two questions: why is it that one may suffer from motion sickness as a car passenger, but, as a driver, escape its effects? And how can one learn postural adjustment against motion sickness by repeatedly travelling in vehicles?

Motion opponency at the middle temporal cortex: Preserved motion information and the effect of perceptual learning.

Motion opponency, first observed within the primate middle temporal cortex (MT), refers to the suppressing effect of opposite motion directions on neuronal activity. Namely, when opposing motion directional signals stimulate an MT neuron's receptive field, this neuron's response is comparable with that induced by flicker noise. Under such suppression, it is unknown whether any directional information is still represented at MT. In this study, we applied support vector machine (SVM) learning to human functional magnetic resonance imaging data to investigate if any motion defined orientation inf…

A dual-Kinect approach to determine torso surface motion for respiratory motion correction in PET.

PURPOSE: Respiratory gating is commonly used to reduce blurring effects and attenuation correction artifacts in positron emission tomography (PET). Established clinically available methods that employ body-attached hardware for acquiring respiration signals rely on the assumption that external surface motion and internal organ motion are well correlated. In this paper, the authors present a markerless method comprising two Microsoft Kinects for determining the motion on the whole torso surface and aim to demonstrate its validity and usefulness-including the potential to study the external/inte…

Estimating the time-to-passage of visual self-motion: Is the second order motion information processed?

Previous work demonstrated that estimating time-to-contact (TTC) of moving objects towards an observer is based only on first-order information and does not take into account the acceleration information. We investigated whether smooth and continuous speed variations are considered in the extrapolation of linear self-motion towards a stationary target. The time-to-passage (TTP) estimation task consisted in presenting a simulated forward self-motion along a street at constant, increasing or decreasing velocity. After a while, the visual target appeared (e.g. a banner) before the visual stimulat…

Telemetry in a motion-sickness model implicates the abdominal vagus in motion-induced gastric dysrhythmia.

In humans, motion sickness is associated with disruption of normal gastric myoelectric activity, and it has been proposed that this results from an imbalance of autonomic nervous system activity. We used the established Suncus murinus (house musk shrew) model of motion-induced emesis to investigate the effect of horizontal motion on gastric myoelectric activity (recorded using telemetry) and the involvement of the abdominal vagi. Surgical vagotomy increased baseline dysrhythmia and reduced the dominant power of the gastric myoelectric signals. In response to motion, normal gastric myoelectric …

Effect of a novel motion desensitization training regime and controlled breathing on habituation to motion sickness.

To study whether controlled breathing, known to ameliorate motion sickness, speeds habituation to nauseogenic motion when used in a novel accelerated training regime, 30 participants (13 men, 17 women, ages 18-51 years) were randomized to either a Breathing group or a Control group. Randomization was balanced for rotation tolerance measured during a first exposure to off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR 72 degrees sec.(-1)). Participants subsequently received four exposures to OVAR in 1-hr. (accelerated training). The Breathing group followed taped instructions to control their breathing during tr…

From muscles to motion: the role of sensor layout and physiological factors in hand motion decoding.

Despite substantial progress in decoding biosignals for human motion prediction, the influence of participant- and experiment-related factors on the decodability of these signals has received comparatively little attention. This study evaluates the continuous prediction of hand and wrist joint flexion using the MyoKi database, which comprises surface electromyography, inertial measurement units, and force myography data from 35 participants without disabilities performing 74 daily-life tasks. Unlike existing datasets, MyoKi includes tasks that mimic real-world scenarios by allowing natural mov…

The role of the ventral intraparietal area (VIP/pVIP) in the perception of object-motion and self-motion.

Retinal image motion is a composite signal that contains information about two behaviourally significant factors: self-motion and the movement of environmental objects. It is thought that the brain separates the two relevant signals, and although multiple brain regions have been identified that respond selectively to the composite optic flow signal, which brain region(s) perform the parsing process remains unknown. Here, we present original evidence that the putative human ventral intraparietal area (pVIP), a region known to receive optic flow signals as well as independent self-motion signals…

The influence of sleep deprivation and oscillating motion on sleepiness, motion sickness, and cognitive and motor performance.

Our goal was to determine how sleep deprivation, nauseogenic motion, and a combination of motion and sleep deprivation affect cognitive vigilance, visual-spatial perception, motor learning and retention, and balance. We exposed four groups of subjects to different combinations of normal 8h sleep or 4h sleep for two nights combined with testing under stationary conditions or during 0.28Hz horizontal linear oscillation. On the two days following controlled sleep, all subjects underwent four test sessions per day that included evaluations of fatigue, motion sickness, vigilance, perceptual discrim…

Correlating chest surface motion to motion of the liver using epsilon-SVR--a porcine study.

In robotic radiosurgery, the compensation of motion of internal organs is vital. This is currently done in two phases: an external surrogate signal (usually active optical markers placed on the patient's chest) is recorded and subsequently correlated to an internal motion signal obtained using stereoscopic X-ray imaging. This internal signal is sampled very infrequently to minimise the patient's exposure to radiation. We have investigated the correlation of the external signal to the motion of the liver in a porcine study using epsilon-support vector regression. IR LEDs were placed on the swin…

Investigation of motion sickness and inertial stability on a moving couch for intra-fraction motion compensation.

BACKGROUND. Respiration-induced tumor motion compensation using a treatment couch requires moving the patient at non-trivial speeds. The purpose of this work was to investigate motion sickness and stability of the patient's external surface due to a moving couch with respiration-comparable velocities and accelerations. MATERIAL AND METHODS. A couch was designed to move with a peak-peak displacement of 5 cm and 1 cm in the S-I and A-P directions, respectively, and a period of 3.6 s. Fifty patients completed a 16-question motion sickness assessment questionnaire (MSAQ) prior to, during, and afte…
