OBJECTIVE: To define the natural history and outcome of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) among a cohort of patients followed up at one center since the onset of their disease.
METHODS: Fifty-seven patients with well-characterized EMS were evaluated prospectively at a university hospital for 21-64 months (mean 36 months).

Pulmonary manifestations are not infrequent in the L-tryptophan-induced eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS). However, previous reports have not described the results of longitudinal pulmonary function, exercise testing, high-resolution computerized tomographic (HRCT) scanning of the chest, or detailed bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) analysis. A case of systemic panniculitis (Weber-Christian disease) presenting with myalgia as the main clinical symptom is reported. There was no laboratory or electromyographic evidence of myogenic disturbance. Biopsy of the painful muscle revealed nonspecific mononuclear cell infiltration in the epimysial fatty tissue, while the muscle fibers remained intact. Shulman's disease (eosinophilic fasciitis) is a very rare autoimmune disorder with an unknown etiopathogenesis. We reviewed the pulmonary history, dyspnea ratings, and pulmonary function test results in 16 patients with L-tryptophan-induced eosinophilia myalgia syndrome to determine the correlation between reported pulmonary complaints and pulmonary function abnormalities.
