Of three patients with mediastinal malignant lymphoma, lymphoblastic type, at the time of diagnosis one also had acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML), and the other two had blood and bone marrow findings indicative of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The latter two patients developed the hematologic picture of AML less than eight months later. In all cases, AML was confirmed by cytochemical studies of peripheral blood and bone marrow cells. In this study, Raman, infrared, UV/vis, NMR, and single crystal X-ray diffraction spectroscopies are used to elucidate the tautomeric equilibrium of azo dyes derived from 1-phenyl-azo-2-naphthol (Sudan I). A new crystallographic structure is described for Sudan I, revealing the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonds and supramolecular interactions, such as the unconventional C-H···O hydrogen bond type, π-stacking, and charge-dipole interactions. DNA content of mycosis infiltrate cells was measured in 5 patients with the Feulgen cytophotometric method in the plaque and tumor stages. In addition, the infiltrate cells were differentiated cytochemically into histiocytes and atypical lymphoid cells with NaF-sensitive naphthol-AS-D-acetate esterase.
