Drug-disease interactions: narrative review of aspirin in gastric ulcer.

INTRODUCTION: Drug-disease interactions include the impact of a drug and a particular disease condition on each other. However, the current practice in addressing drug-disease interaction is unbalanced and mostly limited to how the drug worsens the disease or health condition. AREAS COVERED: Aspirin and gastric ulcer interaction are used as an example to illustrate this concept, especially the narration of how disease affects drug efficacy. The number of molecules that make up 100 mg of aspirin is identified with a view to discuss the pharmacokinetics, especially in terms of absorption and di…

Navigating the poverty of heroin addiction treatment and recovery opportunity in Kenya: access work, self-care and rationed expectations.

Drawing on the analyses of qualitative interview accounts of people who inject heroin in Kenya, we describe the narration of addiction treatment access and recovery desire in conditions characterised by a 'poverty of drug treatment opportunity'. We observe the performance of addiction recovery narrative in the face of heavy social constraints limiting access to care. Fee-based residential rehabilitation ('rehab') is the only treatment locally available and inaccessible to most. Its recovery potential is doubted, given normative expectations of relapse. Treating drug use is a product of tightly…

The multimedia CD ROM: an innovative teaching tool for endoscopic sinus surgery.

The recent explosive growth in the use of endoscopic techniques in the performance of surgical procedures has created an important need for … procedures in ESS are presented to the viewer as brief, individual video sequences, accompanied by narration and a text of the highlights of each procedure. The use of digital video allows the user to access the segment of interest directly, in the order of preference, without having to sift through the other segments, as with conventional videocassettes. …

Macrostructural Narrative Development in Chilean Children With Down Syndrome: An Interventional Cross-Case Study.

PURPOSE: Oral narrative abilities are essential for social participation, academic success, and the development of literacy. While children with Down syndrome (DS) often show relative strengths in narrative macrostructure, little is known about how these skills develop over time and how they respond to targeted intervention, particularly in Spanish-speaking contexts. METHOD: This cross-case study explored macrostructural narrative development in four Chilean children with DS aged 8-12 years over a 6-month period and evaluated the effects of a brief one-on-one narrative intervention. Participa

Endorsing narratives of white replacement: Elite discourse, public attention, and extremist mobilization.

This paper examines how endorsements of white replacement conspiracies by political leaders might redirect public attention and energize white supremacist activity in the United States. We trace the historical evolution of replacement narratives and examine their appeal to political actors, then discuss theoretical frameworks linking reports of hostile political speech, public attention, and extremist mobilization. We construct a novel dataset combining federal and state legislators' endorsements of replacement narratives that received media attention with Google search trends and indicators o

Narrative analysis and clinical meta-synthesis of YouTube storytelling by men living with multiple sclerosis.

In the digital era, people with multiple sclerosis (MS) turn to platforms like YouTube (YT) for information and support, where diverse illness narratives intersect. Evidence suggests that men with MS, an underrepresented population subject to critical experiences of disability, particularly go online to gain agency, connectedness, and reshape their present and future identity with illness. However, little is known about the narratives conveyed in staged MS experiences on YT, and, to our knowledge, no studies have examined how men use this platform to communicate about the disease. This study e

Mental illness and personal recovery: A narrative identity framework.

This article presents a metamorphic model to describe the manifold role of narrative identity, a person's internal life story, across the course of mental illness and personal recovery. First, early adversity and negative co-authoring may contribute to the development of a fragile life story, which itself may combine with life stressors to increase the likelihood of mental illness. Second, mental illness may negatively impact the development of narrative identity, which in turn may exacerbate the devastating effects of mental illness on daily functioning. Finally, positive changes in narrative

Exploring Oral Narrative Abilities of Chilean School-Age Children With Down Syndrome: A Preliminary Study.

Narrative abilities are essential for school achievement and quality of life, yet children with Down syndrome (DS) often struggle with these skills. This work explores the oral narrative abilities of school-age Chilean children with DS. The participants were 11 children with DS aged between 7;2 and 12;1 (years; months). All participated in a retelling task using a wordless picture book. Microstructural and macrostructural performance were analyzed and compared with data from a reference database of typically developing Spanish-speaking children, matched by chronological age or linguistic abili

I did not scream. i could not; i was terrified. i just followed them. . .i blocked my mind. then they all raped me: A narrative inquiry on the onset of tonic immobility among women rape victims in Nigeria.

Tonic immobility (TI) is a common uncontrollable autonomic mammalian response to an extremely fearful situation. It is one of the most immediate devastating consequences of rape and remains poorly understood. While controversies over its definition persist among researchers, this also reflects on the care for and support to victims. The study aimed to explore and describe the onset of TI and the meaning attached to the experience among women raped victims in Nigeria. The study design was the qualitative narrative inquiry approach. Criterion and purposive sampling were conducted across four pos

Beyond trauma: a review of content and linguistic characteristics of nontrauma narratives in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Background: Using narratives to reflect on experiences, emotions, and thoughts is associated with better health, enhanced mood, and improved symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prior research examining narrative characteristics thought to reflect cognitive styles associated with PTSD has focused on trauma narratives, but the characteristics of nontrauma narratives in relation to PTSD are not fully understood. Objective: We reviewed the PTSD literature examining linguistic characteristics of nontrauma narratives, focusing on affective content, personal pronouns, and cognitive proce

Gender-Affirming Voice Surgery: Considerations for Surgical Intervention.

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the current state and available evidence surrounding surgical voice care for the transgender and/or gender expansive population. The term "gender expansive" has been proposed as an inclusive term to classify those who do not identify with traditional gender roles but are otherwise not confined to one gender narrative or experience. We aim to review indications and candidacy for surgery, surgical procedure options for altering vocal pitch, and typical postoperative expectations. The role of voice therapy and considerations for perioperati

Telling Personal Narratives: Comparing Stories Told by 10-Year-Old Speakers of Cypriot Greek Dialect and of Standard Modern Greek.

INTRODUCTION: Cypriot Greek is the variety of Greek language used for oral communication by the Greek Cypriot people, while Standard Modern Greek is the official language. Cypriot Greek differs from Standard Modern Greek in various aspects, including lexicon, phonetics, phonology, morphosyntax, and pragmatics. This study examines whether there are differences between children who are native speakers of the Cypriot Greek dialect and those who are native speakers of Standard Modern Greek in narrative measurements obtained in a personal narrative context. METHODS: Thirty-nine ten-year-old childr

On Caring through Sharing and Reading When Seeing: Attending to Formal Potentialities of Illness Narratives.

What are the formal potentialities of illness narratives across media and writerly modes? And how can a formalist reading within this genre contribute to an understanding of particularly stigmatized illnesses and conditions? This essay considers Julia Lederer's and Carolyn Lazard's semi-autobiographical works on anorexia nervosa and chronic illness, respectively, and approaches them through the lens of Caroline Levine's new formalist method, which fuses the literary (or artistic more broadly) with the social and political. It concludes that Lederer's and Lazard's imagination and creation of ot

How Narrative Engagement with Young Adult Literature Influences Perceptions of Anorexia Nervosa.

Narratives have been shown to alter health beliefs through a process called narrative engagement; however, this process has yet to be empirically investigated for how the increasingly popular young adult (YA) novel format can impact health beliefs about anorexia nervosa among emerging adults. Using an experimental design, we found that the YA format fosters narrative engagement through mechanisms of transportation, which is associated with greater endorsement of accurate social and emotional beliefs about anorexia nervosa. Compared to an informational brochure, the narrative format where the m

Strong in the Face of Adversity.

Palliative care provides holistic care to individuals in life-threatening or life-limiting conditions. This narrative describes the journey of Kanchan. A strong lady and a doting mother, she came to the hospital by choice, in immense pain and with swelling. Her narrative illustrates how the palliative approach draws out the inner strengths of individuals by focusing on their issues and needs. Kanchan was able to benefit from physiotherapy to reduce the risk of lymphoedema after surgery for breast cancer. Her narrative illustrates how she found comfort and relief, ably supported by the dedicate
