An investigation of ear necrosis in pigs.

Porcine ear necrosis was investigated in 23 conveniently chosen farms, consisting of 14 case farms and 9 control farms. Biopsies of lesions and oral swabs from pigs on 11 case farms were examined by histology and bacterial culture. All farms were visited for observations and a survey on management, housing, and the presence of other clinical signs or behavioral vices. Histological examination revealed that the lesions began on the surface and progressed to deeper layers, and that vascular damage did not appear to be the initiating cause. Spirochetes were only rarely observed in histological ex…

Avascular necrosis of a vertebral body.

Avascular necrosis of a vertebral body, a relatively uncommon entity, is caused by malignancy, infection, radiation, systemic steroid treatment, trauma, and the like.1 Vertebral osteonecrosis induced by trauma is called Kvmell's disease, because it was initially described by Hermann Kvmell of Germany in 1891.2 This paper reported a young female with posttraumatic vertebral osteonecrosis and analyzed the causes. She was treated by thoracoscopic surgery successfully.

[Avascular necrosis of the capitate in athletes].

The possibility of osteonecrosis of the carpal bones should always be considered when athletes present with pain of unknown origin in the hand and wrist, in particular, if they are participating in sports such as gymnastics or weight-lifting that involve extreme loading of the wrist with axial compression and microtrauma. This sort of extreme loading of the wrist combined with a constitutionally "weak" blood supply to the individual carpal bones may lead to the formation of osteo-necrotic zones. A treatment method that can produce excellent results, depending on the pathomorphology, is availab…

Fat necrosis of the breast--a review.

Fat necrosis of the breast is a benign condition that most frequently affects peri-menopausal women. It can mimic breast cancer clinically or radiologically. In other cases it can obscure malignant lesions. The core of this review is derived from a MEDLINE database literature search from 1966-2004. Further references were from lateral search. In this paper, we review the pathogenesis and pathology clinical and radiological features of fat necrosis of the breast. The implication of fat necrosis in the management of patients with breast lump is also discussed. Fat necrosis of breast is a complex…

Avascular necrosis of the metacarpal head.

A case of avascular non-traumatic necrosis of the metacarpal head in a 36-year-old woman is reported. Treatment was by curettage of the necrotic bone and packing with cancellous grafts.

Idiopathic avascular necrosis of the capitate.

Idiopathic avascular necrosis (AVN) of the capitate is rare. A 44-year-old woman presented with chronic pain in her dominant wrist without a history of trauma. Clinical and standard radiological examination were initially inconclusive, while MRI was diagnostic. Mid-carpal arthrodesis gave a satisfactory short term result, and the long term result is awaited. Idiopathic AVN of the capitate should be included in the differential diagnosis of chronic wrist pain.

Massive necrosis of the brain in rabies.

A young man developed virologically proved hydrophobic rabies three months after being scratched on the cheek by a bat in Northern Alberta. He became comatose after 8 days and died 5 weeks after vigorous therapy with immune globulin, interferon and Vidarabine, and excellent maintenance of oxygenation. Electroencephalographic deterioration was gradual. At postmortem examination, the brain showed widespread loss of nerve cells, mild diffuse inflammatory changes and no Negri bodies. The lesions of massive laminar necrosis of the cerebral cortex, total loss of Purkinje cells with preservation of t…

Prevention of flap necrosis by chlorpromazine.

Chlorpromazine administered to Sprague-Dawley rats 30 minutes prior to elevation of McFarlane back flaps and continued 14 days thereafter resulted in near complete flap survival, compared with 48 percent necrosis in control animals. Chlorpromazine demonstrates a wide variety of actions that appear to meet all presently known requirements for flap preservation.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFNN) developed in a 1-week-old black boy. His mother had received numerous medications for eclampsia. Birth was by Caesarean section and complicated by meconium aspiration. There were numerous nodules over the back, buttocks and extremities that yielded a caseous-like material. Microscopically, these nodules showed crystallization and necrosis of the fat. Hypoglycemia, pneumonia, oliguria, thrombocytopenia, seizures and urinary infection were associated with the cutaneous problem and led to a fatal outcome 2 weeks after birth.

[Atraumatic necrosis of the femoral head].

The incidence of atraumatic necrosis of the femoral head (ATN) has increased in recent years. The pathogenesis is complex and has a multifactorial etiology. In order to find the best possible treatment option for the often young patients, a well-coordinated evaluation, including differential diagnoses, is required. In particular, the decision whether to attempt to preserve the joint or to proceed with joint replacement is important. Knowledge of relevant classification systems is helpful in making this decision. This CME article aims to provide the necessary knowledge for the optimal treatment…
