Relationship Between Neighborhood Disadvantage and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that (1) higher neighborhood disadvantage is associated with greater injury-related symptom severity in civilians with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and (2) neighborhood disadvantage remains predictive after controlling for other established predictors. SETTING: Level 1 trauma center and affiliated academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS: N = 171 individuals with mTBI. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. MAIN MEASURES: Rivermead Post Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ) total score assessed less than 24 hours and at 2 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months post

The association of ethnic minority density with late entry into antenatal care in the Netherlands.

In the Netherlands, non-Western ethnic minority women make their first antenatal visit later than native Dutch women. Timely entry into ante … l determinants with entry into antenatal care before and after 14 weeks of gestation. We found that neighborhood characteristics influence timely entry above and beyond individual characteristics. Ethnic minority density was associated with a higher risk of late entry into antenatal care. However, our analysis showed that for non-Western women, living in high ethnic minority …

Neighborhood Food Environment and Birth Weight Outcomes in New York City.

IMPORTANCE: Infants born with unhealthy birth weight are at greater risk for long-term health complications, but little is known about how neighborhood characteristics (eg, walkability, food environment) may affect birth weight outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether neighborhood-level characteristics (poverty rate, food environment, and walkability) are associated with risk of unhealthy birth weight outcomes and to evaluate whether gestational weight gain mediated these associations. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The population-based cross-sectional study included births in the 2015 vit…

Associations between the physical environment and park-based physical activity: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: With an increase in the evidence for the associations between park-based physical activity (PA) and physical environments (especially park and neighborhood environments), researchers face an important challenge in interpreting and summarizing the evidence to develop environmental change interventions. An updated review is needed to better inform policymaking and environmental interventions. The current study aimed to systematically review the research on the associations of park-based PA with park and neighborhood environmental characteristics. METHODS: We targeted English peer-re

Sleep disorder and residential segregation in Cleveland, Ohio: analysis of the index of concentration at the extremes (ICE).

Residential segregation is a fundamental structural determinant of health that generates social and spatial inequalities, yet its relationship with clinically diagnosed sleep disorders remains poorly understood. This study examined the association between neighborhood residential segregation and clinically diagnosed sleep disorders among 165,669 individuals residing in 265 census tracts in Cleveland, Ohio. Residential segregation was measured using the Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE), which captures racial segregation (ICE-Race), income segregation (ICE-Income), and racialized eco

Residential segregation, housing cost, and smoking behaviors in Black Americans.

The characteristics of where people live are increasingly recognized as influential in shaping health-related behaviors, including smoking. The adverse impact of poor neighborhood characteristics on health disproportionately plagues Black Americans, but also likely varies across subgroups within the Black community, leading to health disparities. This study examined the roles of residential segregation and housing cost burden in smoking behavior among a national probability sample of 2370 Black American adults. We further assessed whether individual demographics and social support moderated th…

Are we measuring neighborhood disadvantage wrong? A methodological reassessment of its structure in the United States.

Neighborhood disadvantage (or deprivation) indices are increasingly used in population health research and policy. In the United States, many frequently used neighborhood disadvantage indices were originally derived in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, the United States has undergone dramatic economic and social shifts in the past three decades, including the Great Recession, growing wealth inequality, and the changing nature of work in the "gig" economy. Yet few studies have re-evaluated the structure of neighborhood disadvantage to determine if the items included in existing indices c

Neighborhood Context and Financial Strain as Predictors of Marital Interaction and Marital Quality in African American Couples.

Demographic characteristics, family financial strain, neighborhood-level economic disadvantage, and state of residence were tested as predictors of observed warmth, hostility, and self-reported marital quality. Participants were 202 married African American couples who resided in a range of neighborhood contexts. Neighborhood-level economic disadvantage predicted lower warmth during marital interactions, as did residence in the rural south. Consistent with the family stress model (e.g., Conger & Elder, 1994), family financial strain predicted lower perceived marital quality. Unexpectedly, neig

Changing Places and Partners: Associations of Neighborhood Conditions With Sexual Network Turnover Among African American Adults Relocated From Public Housing.

Neighborhood conditions and sexual network turnover have been associated with the acquisition of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, few studies investigate the influence of neighborhood conditions on sexual network turnover. This longitudinal study used data collected across 7 visits from a predominantly substance-misusing cohort of 172 African American adults relocated from public housing in Atlanta, Georgia, to determine whether post-relocation changes in exposure to neighborhood conditions influence sexual network stability, the number of new partners joining sex

Association of neighborhood socioeconomic status with physical fitness in healthy young adults: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

BACKGROUND: Impaired physical fitness, a contributor to obesity and cardiovascular disease, has been associated with both an individual's socioeconomic status (SES) and with residence in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The aim of the study was to examine the extent to which neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with impaired fitness, independent of clinical characteristics and individual-level SES. METHODS: Two thousand five hundred five participants 25 to 42 years old examined in the CARDIA study from 1992 to 1993 underwent symptom-limited exercise stress testing. Physical fitne

Understanding the Effect of Neighborhood on Nursing Home Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Neighborhood context shapes the environment in which nursing homes (NHs) operate, yet its influence on NH outcomes remains insufficiently understood. This study examined whether NHs in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods experienced worse resident and staff COVID-19 outcomes and whether higher facility quality mitigated these neighborhood effects. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study linking facility, neighborhood, and community data from 10 public sources. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Ohio Medicare- or Medicaid-certified, nonhospital-based NHs reporting COVID-19 data beginning M

Family-Based Childcare in Chicago: Opportunities to Advance Environmental and Social Justice for Children.

BACKGROUND: Achieving environmental justice for children requires that their spaces promote health and well-being. In this study, we characterized the broader environmental context for family-based childcare (FCC) homes in Chicago, Illinois, to identify gaps in knowledge and directions for future work. METHODS: Data on childcare providers were obtained from a state agency. Using public data sets, we characterized the physical, chemical, and built (PCB); nutritional; and social environments at the census tract level. We then described differences in neighborhood quality for census tracts conta

Changes in activity spaces, life spaces, and exposures to physical activity-promoting environments among women with overweight or obesity.

Understanding factors associated with successful adherence and maintenance of weight loss interventions is important to potentially increase efficacy. Activity spaces and environmental exposures are two understudied factors that may be associated with intervention adherence and outcomes. Women with overweight or obesity (n = 498) from two weight loss intervention studies, Reach for Health and Metabolic, Exercise, and Nutrition at University of California San Diego, wore accelerometer and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices for 1 week at baseline and at 6-month follow up. Health Predictors of Neighborhood Selection: A Prospective Cohort Study of Residential Mobility in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Health selection into neighborhoods describes unhealthy people moving disproportionately to lower-income neighborhoods, producing observable socioeconomic gradients sometimes falsely attributed to neighborhood effects on health. We investigated residential mobility outcomes and their relationship to baseline health using population-level data linkages in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: We included Canadian Community Health Survey respondents ages 25 to 64 between 2005 and 2014 (n = 93,235). We assessed baseline health using self-reported health and multimorbidity. We captured moves usin

Examining Child and Caregiver Perceptions of Environmental Facilitators and Barriers to Healthy Eating and Active Living During the Summer Months in a Neighborhood With a High Hispanic/Latinx Population: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Children from low-income neighborhoods and of Black or Hispanic/Latinx minority groups are at relatively high risk of accelerated unhealthy weight gain during prolonged school break times when children lose access to a structured environment that provides healthy meals and snacks and opportunities for physical activity. OBJECTIVE: To identify child and caregiver perceptions of the neighborhood- and household-level environmental barriers and facilitators to healthy eating and active living during the summer months in low-income neighborhoods with a high percentage of Hispanic/Latin
