Spontaneous regression of epileptogenic pilocytic astrocytoma with FGFR1-TACC1 fusion.

INTRODUCTION: Pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) is the most common pediatric tumor, typically located in the cerebellum, with spontaneous regression observed mainly in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). However, spontaneous regression of PA without NF1 is rarely reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we describe a case of spontaneous regression of PA without NF1, located in the left frontal lobe with FGFR1-TACC1 fusion, in a 14-year-old boy who presented with epilepsy. Initial MRI revealed a lesion in the left middle frontal gyrus, and subsequent follow-up MRI demonstrated spontaneous regress

Spontaneous complete regression of large uterine fibroid after the second vaginal delivery: Case report.

RATIONALE: Fibroids are common, hormone-dependent, benign uterine tumors. It is estimated that they occur in 20% to 40% of women during their reproductive years. The prevalence of fibroids among pregnant women is 10.7%. Most fibroids do not increase in size during pregnancy. Pregnancy has a variable and unpredictable effect on fibroid growth. The influence of pregnancy on uterine fibroid size still remains unclear. Researchers evaluating fibroids have reported an inverse association between parity and fibroids, suggestive of a protective effect. Pregnancies that occur while fibroids are small

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. A 30 year clinical review.

Thirty-one patients with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center from 1949 to 1979 were reviewed. Eighteen of the patients were previously untreated and in the other 13, previous treatment elsewhere had failed. Median follow-up was 54 months. All the patients were male adolescents whose presentations were characterized by epistaxis (73 percent) and nasal obstruction (60 percent). The tumors invariably arose within the nasal cavity or nasopharynx and involved neighboring structures in 58 percent of the patients. Treatment included surgery (30 patie

Hirsutism Caused by Pregnancy Luteoma in a Low-Resource Setting: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy luteomas are rare, benign, ovarian neoplasms resulting from increased androgenic activity during pregnancy. Often, they occur asymptomatically and are only diagnosed incidentally during imaging or surgery: cesarean section or postpartum tubal ligation. Most common symptoms associated with pregnancy luteoma include acne, deepening of voice, hirsutism, and clitoromegaly. Most pregnancy luteomas regress spontaneously postpartum. Thus, the management of pregnancy luteomas depends on the clinical situation. CASE: We report a case of 28-year-old gravida 2, para 1 who presented

Persistence of Infectious Canine Distemper Virus in Murine Xenotransplants of Canine Histiocytic Sarcoma Cells after Intratumoral Application.

Oncolytic viruses and morbilliviruses in particular, represent an interesting therapeutic approach for tumors with a poor prognosis and frequent resistance to conventional therapies. Canine histiocytic sarcomas (HS) exemplify such a neoplasm in need for new curative approaches. Previous investigations demonstrated a limited success of an acute intratumoral application of canine distemper virus (CDV) on xenotransplanted canine histiocytic sarcoma cells (DH82 cells), while persistently CDV-infected DH82 cell transplants exhibited a complete spontaneous regression. Therefore, the present study fo

Selected aspects of cardiac tumors in infancy and childhood.

Considerable literature concerning cardiac tumors in infancy and childhood has accumulated summarizing the prevalence, histologic types, clinical presentation and outcome, and changing imaging algorithms [1, 7, 10, 14, 20, 24, 33, 37, 43, 48, 57, 58, 60-62, 67, 69, 70, 90, 105, 106, 110, 124, 139, 140, 142, 143, 149]. In this review, we focus on selected aspects of cardiac tumors in the neonate, infant, and child, with an emphasis on imaging modalities [6, 13, 15, 18, 21-23, 60, 71, 77, 80, 92, 98, 99, 103, 107, 112, 114, 119, 146]. Various types of primary cardiac tumors in childhood are disc

A Case of Congenital Brainstem Oligodendroglioma: Pathology Findings and Review of the Literature.

Congenital and perinatal primary brain neoplasms are extremely rare. Brainstem neoplasms in the perinatal and neonatal period are typically of high-grade nature and have poor prognoses with survival rates of less than 2 years from diagnosis. Herein, we report an unusual case of congenital anaplastic oligodendroglioma that arose in the pons and was detected as diffuse pontine glioma on in utero imaging studies during prenatal evaluation at 26 weeks' gestation. A male infant was delivered at 36.4 weeks of gestation via Cesarean section who developed progressive dyspnea shortly after birth. Magne

External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) for asymptomatic bone metastases in patients with solid tumors reduces the risk of skeletal-related events (SREs).

BACKGROUND: The potential benefit of administering external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) to patients with asymptomatic bone metastases has rarely been addressed in clinical investigations. The aim of this study was to determine if cancer patients who were treated with EBRT for asymptomatic bone metastases experienced later onset of pain and skeletal-related events (SREs) than those who were untreated. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted for prostate, breast, and lung cancer patients with asymptomatic bone metastases treated at a single cancer center from 2007 to 2017. Patient

Congenital stage 1 neuroblastoma evolved into stage 4s.

A newborn with a prenatally detected adrenal mass underwent complete resection of a stage 1 favorable histology neuroblastoma (NB) without MYC-N amplification. Two months later, the infant presented with a local recurrence and multiple hepatic metastases. Close follow-up without therapy was adopted for stage 4s NB. Enlarging tumor lesions were seen until the child was 8 months old, followed by later decrease in size. At 36 months of follow-up, the child is alive and disease-free. We describe this case of NB and its abnormally short evolution from stage 1 to stage 4s, despite initial surgery. I

Predicting regression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 in women under 25 years.

BACKGROUND: A number of retrospective and prospective studies have documented substantial rates of regression in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 lesions in young women. Initial observational management of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 is increasingly accepted as appropriate for women under 25 years of age with screen-detected abnormalities and is included in a number of clinical guidelines. However, there has been a paucity of large prospective studies on observational management with strict inclusion criteria. A number of important questions remain, specifically regard

Recurrence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma With Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition After Spontaneous Regression: A Case Report.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most malignant cancers and ranks as the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the world. However, some patients with untreated HCC can experience spontaneous regression, a rare phenomenon that has been observed in various malignancies. Here, we report a unique case with untreated HCC, who first underwent a spontaneous cancer regression after the spontaneous clearing of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection from the liver as evidenced by hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) seroconversion; then developed the recurrent HCC with epith

Primary unknown cancer in pulmonary hilar lymph node with spontaneous transient regression: report of a case.

A 69-year-old man was referred to our hospital in December 1993 because an abnormal mass had been detected in the right pulmonary hilum. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest revealed a swollen hilar lymph node between the right middle and lower lobe bronchi, and an adherent tumor in the right ventrobasal segment (S8). Chest roentgenogram in February 1994, however, showed no evident tumor in the right lung field. In March 1996, the mass in the right pulmonary hilum reappeared on chest roentgenogram. Chest CT revealed a swollen hilar lymph node between the right middle and lower lobe bronchi, b

Case of spontaneous regression of metastatic lesions of leiomyosarcoma of the esophagus.

A rare case of spontaneous regression of esophageal leiomyosarcoma is reported. A 63-year-old woman underwent esophagectomy and reconstruction at our hospital after diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma. Nineteen months after esophagectomy, a coin lesion was detected in the right lung and right thoracotomy revealed pleural dissemination. The lesion in the right lung was resected and was confirmed histologically as recurrence of leiomyosarcoma. During further surgery, metastatic lesions were found in the spleen and pleura. However, all metastatic lesions were found to decrease without any anti-cancer the

Spontaneous Regression of a Congenital Melanocytic Nevus by Sclerosis.

Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMNs) naturally evolve throughout life, growing proportionately with the child, darkening, and exhibiting textural or surface changes (e.g., papillomatous, verrucous, cerebriform), hypertrichosis, and, later in life, lightening of pigmentation. We report the case of a 5-year-old child with complete resolution of a medium-sized CMN involving the distal left leg and foot via sclerosis and in the absence of any halo phenomenon. Spontaneous regression of CMN via sclerosis is rare, and it is thought that an immunologic mechanism different from the mechanism that the hal

Kinetics of tumor growth and regression in IgG multiple myeloma.

Studies of immunoglobulin synthesis, total body tumor cell number, and tumor kinetics were carried out in a series of patients with IgG multiple myeloma. The changes in tumor size associated with tumor growth or with regression were underestimated when the concentration of serum M-component was used as the sole index of tumor mass. Calculation of the total body M-component synthetic rate (corrected for concentration-dependent changes in IgG metabolism) and tumor cell number gave a more accurate and predictable estimate of changes in tumor size. Tumor growth and drug-induced tumor regression we

Spontaneous regression of a clival chordoma. Case report.

In this case report, we present a rare and previously unreported case of spontaneous regression of a histologically consistent clival chordoma. At the time of diagnosis, imaging demonstrated a T2 hyperintense and T1 isointense midline skull base mass, centered in the nasopharynx, with scalloping of the ventral clivus consistent with a chordoma measuring 3.1 × 1.9 × 3.0 cm (8.84 cm3). On pre-operative imaging 2 months later, with no intervening therapy, the mass had regressed by 61.7% to a size of 2.3 × 2.1 × 1.4 cm (3.38 cm3). The patient self-administered several herbal supplements and animal

Spontaneous resolution of a solitary osteochondroma of the distal femur: a case report and review of the literature.

Osteochondromata are common, benign tumours mainly affecting long-bone metaphyses. They comprise 35% of all primary benign bone tumours and 8% of all bone tumours overall, although their true incidence is unknown as many remain undiagnosed. They can cause multiple symptoms including pain and referral for excision is not uncommon. What is less recognized is their potential for spontaneous regression, a phenomenon that renders excision surgery, with its potential risks, unnecessary. We present an illustrated case of a spontaneously resolved, solitary osteochondroma in a young male, highlighting
