Three cases of composite uterine neoplasms comprised of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) and rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) have previously been described, including only one wherein the rhabdomyosarcomatous component was of the embryonal subtype. Whether such composite neoplasms are a variant of RMS, a variant of PNET, or a unique entity is unknown. We report the clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular cytogenetic findings in a case of uterine embryonal RMS with coexisting PNET that was diagnosed in a 25-year-old female. The tumor broadly involved the cervix and corpus uteri and r

Composite tumor of larynx, a recently included entity in the current WHO classification, is often a difficult pathological diagnosis, especially in small biopsies. We report a case of laryngeal composite tumor, initially misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma, which later turned out to be composite in nature, with associated neuroendocrine (small cell carcinoma) component. This report emphasizes the need for obtaining deeper biopsies and their thorough pathological examination to improve the diagnostic accuracy. Keywords: combined small cell carcinoma; composite tumor; larynx; small cell carc

Combined small cell carcinoma (SCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) of the oropharynx is extremely rare and shows an aggressive clinical course. There are only 5 reported cases of combined SCC and SqCC in the English language literature. Here, we report a 59-year-old male presenting with a right tonsillar mass. The mass was biopsied, and the histological findings showed a proliferation of small-sized tumor cells with scant cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for neuroendocrine markers (synaptophysin, chromogranin A, and CD56). Our first diagnosis was tonsillar sm

The fatty-acid primary amide, oleamide, is a novel signaling molecule whose mechanism of biosynthesis is unknown. Recently, the N(18)TG(2) cell line was shown to synthesize oleamide from oleic acid, thereby demonstrating that these cells contain the necessary catalytic activities for generating the fatty-acid primary amide. The ability of peptide alpha-amidating enzyme, peptidylglycine-alpha-amidating monooxygenase (PAM; EC 1.14.17.3), to catalyze the formation of oleamide from oleoylglycine in vitro suggests this as a function for the enzyme in vivo. This investigation shows that N(18)TG(2) c

Surgery for head and neck malignancy may be complex with postoperative admission to critical care units (CCUs) often required. There are, however, increasing demands on this resource. We examined a national intensive care database to assess patterns of admission and outcomes for patients following surgery for malignancies of the oral cavity and oropharynx. An analysis was performed of the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre (ICNARC) Case Mix Programme database. Data were extracted on case mix and outcomes for patients coded as 'malignant neoplasm of the oropharynx requiring surge

Mixed corticomedullary tumor is an adrenal tumor intermixed with cortical and medullary cells. It is extremely rare with unclear tumorigenesis. We reported a 32-year-old female, manifested with typical Cushing's syndrome and hypertension, to be diagnosed with right huge adrenal mixed corticomedullary tumor (8.8 cm). Right adrenalectomy was done to document the tumor intimately admixed with adrenal cortical adenoma and pheochromocytoma by biochemistry and immunohistochemistry. A case-control study was designed to explore the tumorigenesis of mixed corticomedullary tumor by whole exome sequencin

The investigators report a series of prostatic-type lesions occurring in the lower female genital tract. The cases included a 4.5-cm mass representing hyperplasia of the glandular and stromal tissue of paraurethral Skene gland, a small ectopic prostatic lesion in the vulva, and 4 tubulosquamous vaginal polyps. All lesions were immunopositive for prostate-specific antigen and/or prostatic acid phosphatase. A brief discussion of the earlier published material is included.

OBJECTIVE: Salivary gland neoplasms are rare tumours, with most arising in the parotid gland. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a common method for preoperative evaluation of parotid masses, although its usefulness is controversial. This study was designed to evaluate the accuracy of FNAC in a large cohort of patients, with emphasis on diagnosis of benign tumours and especially Warthin tumour which can be managed conservatively.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series with chart review.
SETTING: Tertiary medical centre.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: From 1991 to 2014, all patients 18 or old

We report a tumor arising in the middle ear of a 65-year-old female patient that was composed of an ovarian-type stroma (OS) and an epithelial component. The tumor consisted of irregular, polypoid masses containing multiple variably sized cystic spaces, which were invariably surrounded by the OS. The cystic spaces were lined by flat, cuboidal, or columnar epithelial cells, in most parts showing mucinous differentiation. The epithelial lining of the cysts strongly expressed cytokeratins AE1-3, CK7, CK8, CK18, CK19, EMA, and S100 protein. The stroma expressed CD34 and smooth muscle actin. No cyt

BACKGROUND: Warthin tumor (WT) is a common parotid lesion reliably diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration (FNA). Worrisome metaplastic changes may occur in WT. Their interpretation as mucoepidermoid carcinoma represents a diagnostic pitfall. Moreover, WT and mucoepidermoid carcinoma may coexist, making this distinction difficult. So it is worthwhile to report unusual WT features. We describe a WT with signet-ring cells (SRCs).
CASE: A 61-year-old male presenting with a 3.6-cm right parotid gland mass underwent FNA with rapid on-site evaluation. DiffQuik-stained smears showed groups of oncocytic

Oral myoepithelioma of soft tissue origin, an entity distinct from myoepithelioma of salivary glands, constitutes an extremely rare benign neoplasm, with only 1 previously published case, affecting the tongue of a 22-year-old woman. Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumour (ECT) also is a very rare benign neoplasm of the oral cavity that has a strong predilection for the anterior dorsum of the tongue. The great similarities in the histologic and immunohistochemical characteristics of soft tissue myoepithelioma (STM) and ECT probably indicate that they refer to the same or closely related pathologi

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing interest in liver transplantation for cholangiocarcinomas (CCA), conclusive evidence is lacking. We sought to evaluate the outcomes of liver transplantation for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma in Brazil.
METHODS: Retrospective database analysis of patients undergoing liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within Milan criteria in São Paulo, Brazil. Anatomopathological examination of the explanted liver with the presence of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) or combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA) comprised the study group

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is an exceedingly rare subtype of triple-negative breast cancer, accounting for less than 0.1% of all breast malignancies. In contrast, invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is a more common special histologic type, comprising 5-15% of breast cancers and typically characterized by estrogen receptor positivity and complete loss of epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin) expression. The coexistence of these two biologically and morphologically distinct neoplasms within the same breast lesion is exceptionally rare and, to our knowledge, has not been previously doc

Adult cystic nephroma (CN) and mixed epithelial and stromal tumor of the kidney (MEST) are considered as separate entities in the 2004 World Health Organization classification of renal neoplasms. Recent studies suggested that the two share clinicopathologic features and may represent the same disease process of varying morphology. However, definitive genetic evidence is lacking. We examined their relationship using gene expression profiling and histologic analysis. Gene expression profiles of 3 CN and 3 MEST were analyzed using HGU133 Plus 2.0 microarrays (Affymetrix) and were compared with ea

30-year-old woman admitted for acute abdominal pain with peritoneal signs was immediately operated with findings of hemorrhage in small pelvis. Laparotomy revealed hemorrhagic, friable mass 3 cm in maximum diammeter arising from the uterine horn. The neoplasm broadly invaded myometrium with no evidence of endometrial cavity involvement. Microscopically, the tumor displayed solid mosaic pattern and consisted of large epithelioid cells with ample eosinophilic, finely granular cytoplasm ongoing apparent clear cell change elsewhere. There was marked nuclear irregularity with numerous atypical mito

Intraductal carcinoma (IDC) is a salivary gland tumor currently believed to be analogous to breast ductal carcinoma in situ, consisting of a complex neoplastic epithelial proliferation surrounded by a continuous layer of myoepithelial cells presumed to be native and non-neoplastic. Recent molecular insights have shown that there are at least 3 different types of IDC: (1) intercalated duct-like, with frequent NCOA4-RET fusions; (2) apocrine, with multiple mutations similar to salivary duct carcinoma; and (3) mixed intercalated duct-like and apocrine with frequent RET fusions, especially TRIM27-

BACKGROUND Metastatic mixed adeno-neuroendocrine carcinoma (MANEC) is a rare malignancy. It is characterized by the presence of both neuroendocrine and epithelial components, each of which constitute at least 30% of the lesion to establish the diagnosis. CASE REPORT A 48-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of right upper-quadrant pain and unintentional weight loss of 18 kg. He was also complaining of constipation and fatigue for 6 days. The initial diagnosis from a referring hospital was colon cancer with liver metastasis based on a computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest, abdomen
