[Meigs syndrome with bilateral hydrothorax].

The co-existence of pelvic tumor, hydrothorax and ascites has been known since the last century. The features of this disease were described by Meigs and Cass in 1937; in the same year Roads named it Meigs syndrome. According to the original description this syndrome only included, as pelvic involvement, an ovarian neoplasm; at present it is accepted that hydrothorax and the ascites can also be associated with a uterine tumor, like a fibroma. The existence of either an ovarian or a uterine neoplasm distinguishes the typical Meigs syndrome from a pseudo-Meigs syndrome. The most likely pathogene

Pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumour of the lower back - a rare case and review of the literature.

Pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumour (PHAT) is a very rare low-grade indeterminate neoplasm of connective and other soft tissue, which is not known to metastasize though local recurrence has been documented. It most commonly presents in the lower extremities, but other anatomical locations have been described. This is the second known case of PHAT from the Caribbean region and adds to the limited reported cases of the condition in the literature.

GLI1-Altered Mesenchymal Tumors With ACTB or PTCH1 Fusion: A Molecular and Clinicopathologic Analysis.

Mesenchymal tumors with GLI1 fusions or amplifications have recently emerged as a distinctive group of neoplasms. The terms GLI1-altered mesenchymal tumor or GLI1-altered soft tissue tumor serve as a nosological category, although the exact boundaries/criteria require further elucidation. We examined 16 tumors affecting predominantly adults (median age: 40 years), without sex predilection. Several patients had tumors of longstanding duration (>10 years). The most common primary site was soft tissue (n = 9); other sites included epidural tissue (n = 1), vertebra (n = 1), tongue (n = 1), hard pa

Recurrent peripheral odontogenic fibroma of the attached gingiva: a case report.

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma is an uncommon, benign, unencapsulated, exophytic gingival mass of fibrous connective tissue covered with a surface epithelium. Odontogenic epithelium and mineralized material may be found in the mass. A case is reported of a lesion that recurred in the attached gingiva following initial excision. Differential diagnosis of exophytic gingival lesions and post-operative management are also discussed.

Gastric stromal tumor--a rare cause of an upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare neoplasms arising from connective tissue elements of the gastrointestinal wall. They show a great heterogeneity with respect to their histogenetic, morphologic and prognostic characteristics. GISTs are known with myoid, neural or mixed features of differentiation. Clinical findings are gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain and weight loss. We report on the case of a 50-year-old male patient who presented with melena and acute anemia (hemoglobin 10.5 g/dl). Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a broad-based, centrally ulcerated polypoid format

T-cell infiltration profile in musculoskeletal tumors.

Immunotherapy of musculoskeletal tumors remains clinically challenging and requires the development of gene-engineered/adoptive exogenous immune cells or the identification of new molecular target(s) that can be therapeutically exploited to improve patient outcome. Recently, endogenous B-cell infiltration into tumor microenvironments appears to be an essential promising prognostic factor controlling tumor progression in musculoskeletal malignancy. Here, we explored the level of T-cell infiltration by analyzing expression profiles of CD3E, CD4, and CD8A in 1366 patients and 23 histological type

Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia: an Up-to-Date Review.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a paraneoplastic syndrome resulting in renal phosphate wasting and decreased bone mineralization. TIO is usually induced by small, slowly growing tumors of mesenchymal origin (phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor mixed connective tissue variant [PMTMCT]). Nonspecific symptoms including fatigue, bone pain, and musculoskeletal weakness make the diagnosis elusive and often lead to a delay in treatment. The prognosis of TIO is excellent following complete resection of the neoplasm, which leads to the rapid and complete reversal of all symptoms. If the tumor cannot be

Intra-oral malignant melanoma--a case report and review of the literature.

Malignant melanomas represent one of the most life-threatening forms of cancer. Arising from melanocyte precursors, they have the ability to invade or readily metastasise to any organ. Intra-oral melanomas represent 1-2% of all oral malignancies, and 0.2-8% of all melanomas. Prognoses and eight-year survival rates for intra-oral malignant melanomas are poorer than for cutaneous malignant melanomas (20% and 60% survival, respectively) because of: the absence of symptoms in the early stage of the disease delaying diagnosis; difficulty in determining the width of the radical surgical excision due

[A case of hepatocellar carcinoma associated with mixed connective tissue disease].

A 79-year-old woman, who had been treated because of mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), was admitted to the hospital for the intensive examination of a hepatic tumor that was unexpectedly found on computed tomography. The hepatic tumor was approximately 40 mm in diameter. Her transaminase levels were slightly elevated but hepatic virus markers were negative. However, a liver aspiration biopsy revealed moderately differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the surrounding non-tumor area, nonspecific reactive hepatitis was detected. MCTD associated with HCC has not yet been reported i

Cancer and interstitial lung disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review assesses the contribution of various conditions that cause interstitial lung disease to the development of cancer. RECENT FINDINGS: Interstitial lung diseases for which the available evidence suggests an increased risk of lung cancer include idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, systemic sclerosis, and certain forms of pneumoconioses. The pathogenesis of lung cancer remains unclear, and the available data on inflammation-induced pulmonary fibrosis as a risk factor for lung cancer are summarized. There is inadequate evidence for any conclusions about the risk of solid t

Why don't we use vitamin E in dermatology?

OBJECTIVE: To review the possible uses of topical and systemic tocopherols as therapy for skin conditions in light of the widespread use of vitamin E by patients. DATA SOURCES: Index Medicus was searched for articles published from 1922 (when vitamin E was discovered) to 1966 (the beginning of MEDLINE). MEDLINE was searched for articles in English and French on vitamin E or tocopherol in relation to dermatology. Additional original articles were identified from the reference lists of the review articles. STUDY SELECTION: Only well-designed controlled studies were accepted; anecdotes and open

Diagnosis and treatment of malignant eyelid tumors.

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumors of the eyelid are much less frequent than benign eyelid alterations. These are frequently incidental findings without symptoms which are often overlooked or misinterpreted by patients. OBJECTIVE: This article gives an overview of clinical aspects, diagnostics and treatment of the five most common malignant eyelid tumors and exemplarily explains the essential principles of evidence-based treatment of malignant eyelid tumors. METHODS: This narrative review was prepared based on a selective literature search. The depiction of the treatment of eyelid tumors is suppor

Persistent phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor causing tumor-induced osteomalacia treated with image-guided ablation.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) can present with vague symptoms of diffuse bone pain with pathologic fractures that often lead to a delayed diagnosis. We present a 60-year-old patient with a PMT that was persistently hypophosphatemic after resection, who was then successfully treated with cryoablation of the tumor. Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare cause of hypophosphatemia characterized by vague symptoms of gradual muscle weakness and diffuse bone pain with pathologic fractures that often lead to a delayed diagnosis. This condition is usually caused by benign phosphaturic mese

The role of magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of soft tissue lesions.

Over the last decade MR imaging has gained widespread acceptance as the modality of choice for initial evaluation of a soft tissue mass. Although MR imaging generally does not predict the histologic nature of a mass, significant data are accumulating on MR imaging features useful in the diagnosis of several benign conditions and a few malignant ones. Soft tissue masses that do not demonstrate tumor-specific features on MR imaging should be considered indeterminate and possibly malignant and a biopsy should be obtained. This article reviews the literature and elaborates on soft tissue condition

Lower respiratory tract amyloidosis: Presentation, survival and prognostic factors. A multicenter consecutive case series.

Lower-respiratory-tract (LRT) amyloidosis has rarely been investigated. Our study presents characteristics, outcomes and survival of LRT amyloidosis. This multicenter retrospective study, from 1995 to 2017, included 73 patients with amyloidosis and LRT involvement. Respiratory patterns were: tracheobronchial (n = 17), nodular (n = 10), interstitial (n = 14) or composite (several respiratory involvements, n = 32). Interstitial and composite patterns were associated with multi-organ amyloidosis (n = 37, 80%) while tracheobronchial and nodular patterns were associated with organ-limited amyloidos

"Parapharyngeal space" tumors: a cytopathological study of 24 cases on fine-needle aspiration.

The parapharyngeal space (PPS) is a well-defined anatomic zone of loose connective tissue lying deep to the tonsil and lateral to the pharynx. Neoplasms arising within the PPS are rare. We retrospectively reviewed 24 PPS fine-needle aspirations (FNAs) performed at The Johns Hopkins Hospital over the past 16 years (1987-2002). Patients presented with neck pain, dysphagia, and/or intraoral swelling of varying duration. Radiographic imaging disclosed PPS masses, varying in size from 2.5 to 8 cm. The most common clinicoradiographic suspicion was a nerve sheath tumor. Six cases had FNA performed us
