Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumour of the lateral ventricle in a patient with neurofibromatosis 1.

We report a 33-year-old man with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) with a rosette-forming glioneuronal tumour (RGNT) in the lateral ventricle. The patient had been treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy for a typical juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma of the hypothalamus seven years prior. MRI revealed a contrast-enhancing mass in the anterior horn of the left lateral ventricle. Histological examination demonstrated two distinct regions characterised by a rosette-forming neurocytic component and an astrocytic predominant component. Immunohistochemical studies showed glial fibrillary acidic prote

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors: a prospective clinicopathologic and outcome study of 13 children.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNETs) are benign intracortical masses that are typically observed in children and young adults and are classified as glioneuronal tumors (WHO grade I). Large and retrospective series of patients with DNETs have been reported, but prospective studies on pediatric cohorts of patients with DNETs have been lacking. In the present study, 13 children (8 boys, 5 girls; age 8-18 years) who had simple (n = 2) or complex (n = 11) partial seizures (seizure duration range, 2-4 years; mean, 1.5 years; mode, 1.2 years) were prospectively enrolled and monitored over

Various findings in surgically treated epilepsy patients with dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors in comparison with those of patients with other low-grade brain tumors and other neuronal migration disorders.

PURPOSE: To determine whether dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNTs) that belong to the neuronal migration disorders (NMDs) are to be classified with them or with "other low-grade brain tumors" regarding several etiologic, clinical, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and EEG findings. METHODS: These findings of 21 DNT patients were compared with those of 13 consecutive patients with other low-grade brain tumors and 41 NMD patients. RESULTS: The result is absolutely clear: nearly all findings in DNT patients (complications during pregnancy, birth, the newborn period and the postnatal p

Primary diffuse leptomeningeal gliomatosis mimicking tuberculous meningitis.

Primary diffuse leptomeningeal gliomatosis is a disease with an aggressive course that can result in death. To date, 82 cases have been reported. Here, the case of a 3-year-old male patient presenting with strabismus, headache, and restlessness is reported. Physical examination revealed paralysis of the left abducens nerve, neck stiffness, and bilateral papilledema. Tuberculous meningitis was tentatively diagnosed, and antituberculosis treatment was initiated when cranial imaging revealed contrast enhancement around the basal cistern. Craniocervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was perform

Intraventricular astroblastoma. Case report.

Astroblastoma is a rare primary brain neoplasm that accounts for 0.45-2.8% of brain gliomas. Intraventricular localization is extremely rare. The authors report a case of well-differentiated completely intraventricular astroblastoma in a 6-year-old girl and review the relevant literature. Their patient presented with a 5-week history of progressive nausea and vomiting. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a large, well-demarcated, solid-cystic mass in the left temporooccipital ventricular horn. Macroscopic radical resection of the tumor was performed via the superior temporal sulcus. The p

[Gliomatosis cerebri. Report of two cases].

Gliomatosis cerebri is a rare tumor of the central nervous system, and here we report two cases of this tumor. Case 1: A 41-year-old female was admitted to our department for evaluation of activity loss and mental changes. MR imaging revealed a high intensity symmetrical lesion in the bilateral frontal and temporal regions, thalamus and midbrain on FLAIR images. The patient had no neurological deficits and no abnormal findings in clinical laboratory data, including data for the cerebral spinal fluid. A specimen obtained by open biopsy revealed widespread infiltration of neuronal structures by

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor of the midbrain tectum: a case report.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) is a relatively new nosologic entity. First described in 1988, it is now included in the "neuronal and mixed neuronal-glial tumours" category in the revised 2000 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours of the Nervous System. The collective experience of more than 300 reported cases indicates that, with only rare exceptions, DNTs are cerebral cortical lesions. At present, the actual incidence of extracortical DNT is unknown. We describe, the clinicopathologic features of the first tectal DNT. The patient was a 51-year-old man with a

Pigmented medulloepithelioma: report of a case and review of the literature.

A 9-year-old male child had a IV ventricular medulloepithelioma of classical histology, showing tubulopapillary and undifferentiated areas. The unusual feature, however, was the presence of melanin pigmentation in the cells, which was further confirmed by electron microscopy. So far 28 cases of medulloepithelioma have been reported in the English literature. However, none of them showed melanin pigmentation. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case of pigmented medulloepithelioma in the English literature.

Malignant teratoid tumor of the thyroid gland: an aggressive primitive multiphenotypic malignancy showing organotypical elements and frequent DICER1 alterations-is the term "thyroblastoma" more appropriate?

Primary thyroid teratomas are exceedingly rare. Mature and immature variants recapitulate their gonadal counterparts (predilection for infants/children, triphasic germ layer differentiation, and favorable outcome). On the other hand, the so-called malignant teratomas affect predominantly adults and elderly, are highly aggressive, and, according to a few published cases, harbor DICER1 mutations. We describe three highly aggressive sporadic malignant teratoid thyroid tumors in 2 females (17 and 45 years) and one male (17 years). Histology showed triphasic neoplasms composed of solid nests of sma

Immune Microenvironment and Lineage Tracing Help to Decipher Rosette-Forming Glioneuronal Tumors: A Multi-Omics Analysis.

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumors (RGNT) are rare low-grade primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors. The methylation class (MC) RGNT (MC-RGNT) delineates RGNT from other neurocytic CNS tumors with similar histological features. We performed a comprehensive molecular analysis including whole-exome sequencing, RNAseq, and methylome on 9 tumors with similar histology, focusing on the immune microenvironment and cell of origin of RGNT. Three RGNT in this cohort were plotted within the MC-RGNT and characterized by FGFR1 mutation plus PIK3CA or NF1 mutations. RNAseq analysis, validated by immu

Spatiotemporal expression pattern of neuroepithelial stem cell marker nestin suggests a role in dermal homeostasis, neovasculogenesis, and tumor stroma development: a study on embryonic and adult human skin.

BACKGROUND: Whereas keratinocytic bulge stem cells are well characterized, comparably little is known about cutaneous mesenchymal stem cells. The follicular connective tissue sheath is proposed as a niche for dermal stem cells. OBJECTIVE: Because the neuroepithelial stem cell marker nestin represents a marker for mesenchymal stem cells in various tissues, our aim was to characterize its spatiotemporal expression pattern in the skin with special reference to the follicular mesenchyme. METHODS: We studied immunohistochemically nestin expression over the course of human cutaneous embryogenesis,

[Revised WHO classification and new developments in diagnosis of central nervous system tumors].

In recent years there has been considerable progress in brain tumor neuropathology. Several new diagnostic entities have been recognized, subclassification schemes have been modified, and new concepts on the histogenesis and cell biology of brain tumors have emerged. In 1993, a revised WHO classification of brain tumors was published by an international committee. This article summarizes the pertinent new aspects. As novel tumor entities, the central neurocytoma, the dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT), desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma (DIG) and pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA)

Endocrine disorders in 66 suprasellar and pineal tumors of patients with prepubertal and pubertal ages.

Tumor oncotypes, initial symptoms and endocrine disturbances before and/or 1 month after surgery were studied in 66 patients with prepubertal and pubertal ages having suprasellar or pineal intracranial tumors. Neoplasms found in patients of prepubertal age were: 15 craniopharyngiomas (CRA), 24 neuroepithelial-cell-derived tumors (NEC), 5 germ cell tumors (GERM) and 4 other lesions (OTHER). In patients of pubertal age, there were 7 CRA, 7 pituitary tumors (PIT), 2 NEC, 1 GERM and 1 OTHER. Approximately 90% of patients had visual abnormalities as one of the initial signs and symptoms, while 59%

Primitive neuroepithelial tumours of soft tissues and of bone: further ultrastructural and immunocytochemical clarification of 'Ewing's sarcoma', including freeze-fracture analysis.

The ultrastructural appearances of 7 primitive neuroepithelial tumours (PNETs) originating in soft tissues and bone are described. Three of the tumours represented primary soft tissue lesions, while locally recurrent tumour or pulmonary metastases were studied from the 4 skeletal tumours, all of which had been diagnosed previously as Ewing's sarcomas. Rosettes were present in one of the soft tissue lesions and although not seen in the primary skeletal neoplasms, they were identified by light microscopy (LM) in 2 of 3 pulmonary metastases, one of which had the morphology of a neuroepithelioma,

Imaging in a new pediatric brain tumor-a supratentorial neuroepithelial tumor with PLAGL1 fusion.

Molecular diagnostics have dramatically influenced the classification of tumor groups in the 2021 WHO CNS tumor classification. Studies focusing on molecular diagnostics continue to identify new tumors. Soon after the summary of the new classification was published, "Supratentorial Neuroepithelial Tumor with PLAGL1 Fusion" was described as a distinct entity. Although this new entity is defined pathologically, its imaging features are undefined. This case report discusses the imaging findings and possible differential diagnosis of the new tumor.
