Drug-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) can be a serious concern for both patients and clinicians. DIGO is a well-documented side-effect of some pharmacologic agents, including, but not limited to, calcium channel blockers, phenytoin, and cyclosporine. Plasma cell granulomas (pseudotumors) are exceedingly rare, non-neoplastic, reactive tumor-like proliferation, primarily composed of plasma cells that manifest primarily in the lungs, but may occur in various anatomic locations. Intraoral plasma cell granulomas involving the lip, oral mucosa, tongue, and gingiva have been reported in the past. T

We report two cases of extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) of the pancreas, diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration (FNA). Plasmacytoma of the pancreas is a rare neoplasm with only 12 cases recorded in the literature. Because of its scarcity and the cytomorphologic similarity between plasma cells and endocrine cells, EMP of the pancreas may be confused with neuroendocrine (islet cell) tumors of the pancreas. Immunohistochemical staining for light chain and/or neuroendocrine markers will prevent diagnostic error when interpreting plasmacytoid neoplasms of any site susceptible to endocrine tumors, inc

Pax5, or B-cell-specific activator protein, is a nuclear protein in the paired-box containing (PAX) family of transcription factors involved in control of organ development and tissue differentiation. Pax5 is mostly expressed in B lymphocytes and B-cell lymphomas, although recent data have shown expression in the developing central nervous system, some neuroendocrine tumors, and occasional myeloid leukemias. Pax5 immunohistochemistry shows robust nuclear staining, and has become a valuable tool in the diagnosis and subclassification of lymphomas. Pax5 staining is positive in most Hodgkin and B

In comparison with other rodents, the mastomys is unique as regards the patterns of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases that it develops, some of which may constitute suitable animal models for corresponding diseases of man. Among the spontaneous diseases commonly encountered in necropsies of 600 mastomys maintained in a closed colony were: (1) degenerative joint disease of diarthroses and interventricular disks, which develops regularly in the second year of life; (2) renal disease, a type of immune-complex glomerulonephritis, affecting approximately 80% of mastomys in the age bracket 18-3

Plasmacytoma is a plasma cell neoplasm that locally infiltrates a bone or spreads to extramedullary areas. A new World Health Organization criterion defines solitary plasmacytoma of bone as a localized bone tumor consisting of plasma cells identical to those seen in plasma cell myeloma, which is manifested as a solitary osteolytic lesion in a radiological evaluation. Primary tumors of the sternum are generally malignant, and solitary plasmacytomas of the sternum are very rare tumors. We present herein the case of a patient who had a primary sternal tumor with solitary plasmacytoma and no evide

CONTEXT: - Different types of mature B-cell lymphomas, including plasma cell neoplasms, exhibit distinct immunohistochemical profiles, which enable them to be correctly diagnosed. However, except for rare examples of lymphoma-specific immunohistochemistry, such as cyclin D1 in mantle cell lymphoma and annexin A1 in hairy cell leukemia, immunohistochemical profiles of mature B-cell lymphomas overlap and lack specificity.
OBJECTIVES: - To systemically review immunohistochemical features associated with commonly encountered mature B-cell lymphomas based on the presence or absence of CD5 and CD10

Multiple myeloma (Kahler disease) is a monoclonal plasma cell immunoproliferative neoplasm originating within the bone marrow that involves the production of monoclonal immunoglobulins, mostly IgG and IgA. Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a subset of plasma cell neoplasms that can develop in patients at the time of diagnosis with multiple myeloma, or relapse of the disease. Symptoms related to plasmacytomas depend on the primary location. Here in, we present a rare case of extramedullary plasmacytoma involving the portacaval space in an 83-year-old African American female with relapsed mul

Solitary plasmacytoma is plasma cell neoplasm. It is a localized bone disease and for this reason it is different from multiple myeloma (systemic plasma cell neoplasm). Sometimes, solitary plasmacytoma precedes a following multiple myeloma. Clinical findings of solitary plasmacytoma are related to the univocal localization on damaged bone, while laboratory findings could be similar to multiple myeloma (i.e. M component, kidney dysfunction, blood calcium alterations, increased beta-2-microglobulin). However, during a solitary plasmacytoma, laboratory findings could not be present contemporaneou

A 60-year-old man developed a left VIth-nerve paralysis and underwent biopsy of an extramedullary plasmacytoma in the sphenoid sinus. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated cytoplasmic IgD and lambda determinants. Subsequent specimens from left clavical and thoracic epidural lesions also showed a plasma cell neoplasm with IgD and lambda determinants. No abnormal plasma cells were found in bone marrow specimens. Lambda Bence-Jones protein and monoclonal IgD-lambda protein in the serum were detected several months after onset. The patient died with disseminated plasmacytoma 1 year after diagnosis. Th

Multiple myeloma is a neoplastic disorder caused by the proliferation of a transformed B lymphoid progenitor cell that gives rise to a clone of immunoglobulin-secreting cells. Other plasma cell tumours include solitary plasmacytoma of bone (SPB) and extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMP). Despite an apparent common origin there exist pathological and clinical differences between these neoplasms and the association between them is not completely understood. A case of IgG multiple myeloma that presented with typical clinical and laboratory features, including a bone marrow infiltrated by well differ

Crystal Storing Histiocytosis (CSH) is a rare entity occurring in association with underlying lymphoproliferative disorders and plasma cell neoplasms. It denotes accumulation of immunoglobulin crystals in the histiocyte cytoplasm. In this study, we report a patient with plasma cell myeloma who presented with bilateral comminuted femur fractures. Histological examination of fracture tissue revealed hypercellular (~100%) marrow with extensive involvement by sheets of histiocytes with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm admixed with scattered plasma cells. BACKGROUND: Queensland has the world's highest incidence of cutaneous melanoma, creating a large survivor population at risk of second primary cancers. This population-based study investigated the association between melanoma and subsequent haematological malignancies (HM) in Queensland, Australia.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using Queensland Cancer Registry data from 2012 to 2022, including residents diagnosed with invasive melanoma. Individuals were followed until 2022, and Standardised Incidence Ratios (SIRs) were calculated based on expected cases in the general po

The interleukin (IL)-7 receptor (IL-7R) is expressed on human pre-B but not mature B-cells. We hypothesised that aberrant expression of IL-7R contributes to B-cell oncogenesis. Surface expression of IL-7R components CD127 and CD132, and intracellular Ki-67 and Bcl-2 were examined by flow cytometry on peripheral blood or bone marrow mononuclear cells (PBMC; BMMC) from patients with B-cell derived neoplasms, chronic human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) infection alone, or healthy volunteers. Plasma IL-7, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-21, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma and BAFF were measured by enzyme

The carcinogenic potential of nelfinavir mesylate (nelfinavir) was evaluated in a 2-year oral (gavage) study on Sprague-Dawley rats at dose levels of 0 (control), 0 (vehicle control), 100, 300 and 1000 mg/kg per day. At the end of the treatment, increased incidences of thyroid follicular cell hyperplasia and neoplasms were observed at 300 (males) and 1000 mg/kg per day (both sexes). There were no other treatment-related effects and no tumors at other sites. Results from previous studies indicated a number of effects in the liver and thyroid, as well as metabolic profiles that suggested nelfina

Hepatic inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) describes a mass lesion composed of fibroblasts or myofibroblasts with a dense inflammatory infiltrate comprising lymphocyte, plasma cells, and histiocytes. These lesions are presumed to be an exuberant response to an infectious organism, although in most cases the causative agent is unknown. In specific circumstances, pathologists should consider ancillary techniques to exclude specific infections, such as mycobacteria, Candida, or syphilis. IgG4-related disease may cause a plasma-cell rich IPT. Finally, true neoplasms can mimic IPTs and must be excluded

Extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMPs) are localized plasma cell neoplasms that occur within the soft tissues; by definition they cannot occur within bone. They account for 1-2% of all plasma cell growths and have a great predilection for the upper respiratory tract, without specific manifestations. Males are more frequently affected during the fifth and sixth decades of life. At initial presentation, multiple myeloma should be excluded. We report herein the case of a 63-year-old man with an EMP arising in the right maxillary sinus who was referred for surgical excision and postoperative radiothe

Extramedullary plasmacytoma and solitary plasmacytoma are localized neoplasms. Solitary plasmacytoma of bone consists about 4% of malignant plasma cell tumors. A plasmacytoma involving the frontal bone is unusual, and a limited number of cases have been reported. We present a rare case of a solitary plasmacytoma of the frontal bone manifesting as a forehead lump.
