OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the time trend in the surgical site infection (SSI) rate in relation to the duration of surveillance in The Netherlands.
SETTING: Forty-two hospitals that participated in the the Dutch national nosocomial surveillance network, which is known as PREZIES (Preventie van Ziekenhuisinfecties door Surveillance), and that registered at least 1 of the following 5 frequently performed surgical procedures for at least 3 years during the period from 1996 through 2006: mastectomy, colectomy, replacement of the head of the femur, total hip arthroplasty, or knee arthroplasty.

AIM: The aim of this study was to gain insight into contraception practised and related to breastfeeding duration.
METHODS: Mothers with infants up to 6 months received a questionnaire on infant feeding (breast or formula feeding) and contraception (hormonal or non-hormonal methods). Estimates of the time interval between resuming contraception and cessation of lactation was calculated by Chained Equations Multiple Imputation.

A 55-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of malaise, jaundice en cholestatic liver function impairment, 4 days after his return from vacation in Surinam. Within 2 weeks after a bird-fanciers fair in the Netherlands in November 2007 11 patients presented at our hospital with fever, shivers and severe headache. Dyspnea and dry cough were less common, although the chest X-ray showed a consolidation in 9 out of 11 patients. The clinical diagnosis of psittacosis was quickly confirmed using real-time PCR, although the sensitivity of this test was low (20%). The protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium is found world-wide and can cause disease in both humans and animals. To study the zoonotic potential of Cryptosporidium in The Netherlands we isolated this parasite from the faeces of infected humans and cattle and genotyped those isolates for several different markers. In 2004, an outbreak of LGV was detected in MSM in the Netherlands. By January 2006, 179 confirmed cases of LGV had been reported; 65 (retrospectively) in 2002/2003, 76 in 2004 and 38 in 2005. The evolution of the LGV outbreak appears to have slowed down and only a few cases were found in the first months of 2006.
