Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a chronic, benign neurodermatitis of unclear etiology characterized by excoriated, intensely pruritic nodules secondary to an intense itch-scratch cycle. We report a case of localized cutaneous amyloidosis in a 42-year-old Japanese woman. Skin lesions were confined to the nuchal area, and the clinical appearance resembled that of lichen simplex chronicus. Our experience with this case indicates that, in cases presenting with persistent skin lesions simulating lichen simplex chronicus, amyloid should be specifically looked for in biopsy material.

Neurogenic causes of pruritus and a rash are uncommon. We report a patient with dermatomal pruritus and a rash who had a cervicothoracic syrinx and a thoracic spinal cord tumor. We believe the syrinx interrupted fibers subserving itch, resulting in dermatomal pruritus with secondary scratching and a rash.
