A case report of solitary neurofibroma of the Vas deferens.

Solitary neurofibroma of the male genital tract is a rare benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor which is considered to originate from the Schwann cell. Neurofibroma of the male genital tract has been reported extremely rarely in the literature. We present a case of neurofibroma of the Vas deferens in a 59-year-old patient. The clinical and pathological data of a patient with Neurofibroma of the Vas deferens were retrospectively analyzed and radical resection of the left side spermatic cord tumor was performed. This case report will help in understanding this rare tumor.

Diffuse Neurofibroma in a Patient with Unknown History of NF1.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a rare disease in the parotid gland with a poor prognosis in most cases. The disease most often develops in the setting of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) but can also occur sporadically. Herein, we report a rare case of MPNST in the parotid gland, in a patient with no previous history of NF1. Initial investigations of the patient, which consisted of laboratory investigations, ultrasound imaging of the swelling, fine-needle aspiration (FNA), computed tomography (CT) scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the neck and swelling, were compa…

[Head and neck neurofibromas: analysis of 46 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the surgical mode, recurrence and prognosis for patients with head and neck neurofibromas and explore their treatment strategies. METHODS: The clinicopathological features, operation mode, prognosis and neural function of 46 patients with head and neck neurofibroma were analyzed retrospectively, and 41 of the cases were followed up for 24-170 months (median 74 months). RESULTS: Among the 41 followed-up patients, 26 patients were cured and 15 patients were not cured (two died). The cure rate of the neurofibromas with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and the neurofibrom…

Surgical experience of intratemporal facial nerve neurofibromas.

CONCLUSIONS: The first presentation of intratemporal facial neurofibromas was variable, with facial palsy most common. The tumors often involve two or more segments of facial nerve. Outcomes of the tumors were closely related to nerve integrity, preoperative facial nerve function level, and follow-up period. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to present surgical experience of 11 cases with intratemporal facial neurofibroma. METHODS: Clinical data of the 11 cases with the tumors was retrospectively collected and analyzed. They were followed up for 37.9 ± 1.7 months, range 13-59 months, exce…

[Neurofibroma of the larynx in a nine month-old child].

Neurofibroma of the larynx is a very rare condition. A nine month-old boy presented with airway obstruction due to a plexiform neurofibroma of the larynx. It also involved the proximal part of trachea and hypopharynx. Surgical excision was not a possibility. A tracheotomy was performed in order to secure the airways. The patient was doing well afterwards and has been followed with an MRI scan twice a year. Though neurofibroma of the larynx is rare, it should be considered when diagnosing of children with airway obstruction. Long-term follow-up is essential due to risk of malignant transformati…

Superficial neurofibromas in the setting of schwannomatosis: nosologic implications.

First described in the past decade, schwannomatosis is a syndrome distinct from neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2). It is characterized by the development of multiple schwannomas, sparing the vestibular division of cranial nerve VIII, and may also predispose to develop meningiomas. We report two female patients, a 27 and a 44 years old who developed multiple peripheral schwannomas, but without involvement of the vestibular nerves, satisfying clinical criteria for schwannomatosis. Lack of vestibular nerve involvement was confirmed with MRI using an internal auditory canal protocol with 3 mm thick slices…

Multiple intraorbital neurofibromas: a rare cause of proptosis.

BACKGROUND: Orbital neurofibromas are rare, accounting for 0.5 to 2.4 % of all orbital tumors. Generally, they manifest as slowly progressive proptosis, in a young adult or middle-aged person, and are usually solitary lesions. Sometimes, they can be associated with type 1 neurofibromatosis. We present a case of proptosis related to multiple intraorbital neurofibromas in an 82-year-old woman without type 1 neurofibromatosis. HISTORY AND SIGNS: An 82-year-old woman was referred for slowly progressive left proptosis associated with an ocular burning sensation. Neuro-ophthalmic examination reveal…

Postoperative pathology confirmed perianal plexiform neurofibroma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Plexiform neurofibroma (PN) is extremely rare in the perianal region, primarily attributed to the lack of thick nerve trunks in the perianal area, and is closely related to neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). CASE SUMMARY: Here we described a 21-year-old man who was admitted to the hospital with a chief complaint of a painless mass on the left perianal area for 10 years. Physical examination revealed a nodular cystic-solid mass approximately 6.0 cm × 3.0 cm in size in the left perianal area, with an irregular shape, soft texture, good mobility, and no obvious tenderness; no abnormalit…

Oral Neurofibroma: An Integrative Retrospective Analysis of Clinicopathological Data.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromas are benign proliferations of Schwann cells, perineural cells, and endoneural fibroblasts. They are uncommon peripheral nerve sheath tumors that display a broad spectrum of histopathologic features. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical and histopathologic features of oral neurofibromas (ONs) diagnosed in the Oral Pathology Laboratory, College of Dentistry, the University of Baghdad (Baghdad, Iraq). STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective clinicopathologic study of ONs was performed (2010-2025). All cases were revised by 2 previously trained oral pathologists using light micros…

Plexiform neurofibroma masquerading as a giant congenital melanocytic nevus.

A 4-month-old male presented for a large, hypertrichotic brown patch on the upper back with several scattered 0.5-1.5 cm, round to oval, brown macules and patches on the trunk and extremities. The lesion was initially diagnosed as a giant congenital melanocytic nevus based on clinical exam and histopathology with immunohistochemical stains. The patient was later diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1, and the lesion on the back developed a "bag of worms" texture consistent with a plexiform neurofibroma and found to harbor a pathogenic variant in the NF1 gene. This case highlights the diagnost…

How to Distinguish Solitary Neurofibroma From Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Neurofibroma is a benign tumor originating from Schwann cells. It is diagnosed as a symptom of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) or solitary neurofibroma. Neurofibromatosis type 1 belongs to a class of hereditary diseases, whereas solitary neurofibroma is not. Presence of germline NF1 gene mutations can be used to distinguish the 2 conditions. However, due to false negative results in gene tests, NF1 may be misdiagnosed as solitary neurofibroma. This calls for development of more accurate diagnostic methods. The authors report 2 patients with neurofibroma who required surgery and fertility consul…

Polymorphous Adenocarcinoma, Low Grade Variant, Colliding with a Neurofibroma.

Collision tumors, composed of two distinct benign or malignant neoplasms, are rarely reported in the oral cavity. We present a case of a 61-year-old female with an asymptomatic non-demarcated lump on the soft palate of unknown duration. An incisional biopsy revealed the presence of two neoplastic populations, a neurofibroma that was partially infiltrated by a polymorphous adenocarcinoma, low-grade variant. Total surgical excision was performed, with uneventful follow-up period. The development of collision tumors may be incidental, although molecular events may influence the pathogenetic mecha…

LASER Assisted Excision of Solitary Neurofibroma in the Gingiva.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder that presents as benign tumours of the nervous system originating from the nerve sheath. It is of three types: Type I, Type II and Schwannomatosis. Type I Neurofibromatosis or von Recklinghausen's disease is the most common type of neurofibromatosis seen and it accounts for 90% of all cases seen. It can be seen as light brown pigmentation spots (Café-au-lait) on the skin and multiple small tumours among the nerves. Oral manifestations of NF are very rare and can be seen as sessile lesion in the tongue or the gingiva. The major complaints of the oral…

Management of cutaneous neurofibroma: current therapy and future directions.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a life-long neurocutaneous disorder characterized by a predisposition to tumor development, including cutaneous neurofibroma (cNF), the hallmark of the disease. cNF is a histologically benign, multicellular tumor formed in virtually most individuals with NF1. It is considered the most burdensome feature of the disorder due to their physical discomfort, cosmetically disfiguring appearance, and psychosocial burden. Management of cNF remains a challenge in the medical field. Effective medicinal treatment for cNF does not exist at this time. Trials aimed at target…
