Epistaxis from the anterior septum is frequently treated with a topical application of silver nitrate, which cauterizes the bleeding vessel. However, this treatment causes a septal perforation in a small percentage of patients. We report our study of the histologic effect of topical silver nitrate on samples of septal tissue obtained from 11 patients. Oxidative and nitrative injury is implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Down syndrome (DS), but no direct evidence links this type of injury to the formation of neurofibrillary tau lesions. To address this, we generated a monoclonal antibody (mAb), n847, which recognizes nitrated tau and alpha-synuclein. n847 detected nitrated tau in the insoluble fraction of AD, corticobasal degeneration (CBD), and Pick's disease (PiD) brains by Western blots. In this study, we investigated the effects of various nitrogen oxide (NO(x)) species on the extent of prostaglandin H(2) synthase-1 (PGHS-1) nitration in purified protein and in vascular smooth muscle cells. Gallium nitrate (GaN) reduces cancer-related hypercalcemia and inhibits bone resorption in vitro. This study investigated the clinical effectiveness and the long-term relapse rate of the topical imidazole, econazole nitrate, in the treatment of tinea pedis. Econazole nitrate cream was applied by twenty-two patients with tinea pedis for twenty-eight consecutive days. Therapy was then discontinued and patients were evaluated to determine the long-term relapse rate. In Chlamydomonas reinhardii the reduction of nitrate to ammonia occurs in two independent enzymatic steps: 1. the two-electrons reduction of nitrate to nitrite catalyzed by NADH-nitrate reductase, and, 2. the six-electrons reduction of nitrite to ammonia catalyzed by ferredoxin-nitrite reductase. Econazole-nitrate is a new potent antifungal drug with a broad spectrum against dermatophytes, yeasts and moulds; in addition it is effective against gram-positive bacteria. Econazole nitrate was tested in-vitro for antifungal and anti-microbial properties. In an open trial 75 patients were treated with a 1 percent econazole cream. Cure was achieved in tinea pedis in 91 percent; in tinea genitocruralis in 100 percent and in tinea corporis in 92 percent. The remainder were greatly improved. 22 patients with erythrasma were cured within 3 weeks.
