Cystic conditions of the jawbones were recognized long before the establishment of the American Academy of Oral Pathology (AAOP) in 1948, but it was around this time when they were studied, characterized, and classified. The history of the classification systems implemented by oral pathologists to study the cystic conditions of the maxillary bones is intimately related with the birth of oral and maxillofacial pathology as a specialty of dentistry. The purpose of this paper is to review the early classification systems proposed for the cystic conditions of the jawbones.

Keratins and secretory component (SC) were immunohistochemically examined in fresh tissue samples from 45 odontogenic and 35 non-odontogenic cysts. Lining epithelia of almost all cases contained keratins which reacted with polyclonal antibodies (Dako, Bio-Science), and no difference could be found between the two groups of lesions. By staining with two monoclonal antibodies against keratins, i.e., RGE53 (Bio-Science) and RKSE60 (Bio-Science), it was revealed that the epithelia of non-odontogenic cysts, which were columnar epithelium in most cases, had fully and positively reacted with RGE53, w

The nasopalatine cyst is the most common epithelial and non-odontogenic cyst of the maxilla. It is of embryological origin. It is different from a radicular cyst. The diagnosis is based on radiographic and histological data. The treatment is enucleation. The surgical approach depends on the size of the cyst and its anterior or posterior extension. Excision must be total to avoid relapse which may occur beyond 5 years. Long-term follow-up is essential.

Nasopalatine are the most prevalent of non-odontogenic cysts in the oral cavity. Their origin, however, is still a source of controversy. We report the case of a patient with a mass in the anterior half of the hard palate following months of evolution, with a review of the literature.
