A comparative validation of biodosimetry and physical dosimetry techniques for possible triage applications in emergency dosimetry.

Large-scale radiological accidents or nuclear terrorist incidents involving radiological or nuclear materials can potentially expose thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of people to unknown radiation doses, requiring prompt dose reconstruction for appropriate triage. Two types of dosimetry methods namely, biodosimetry and physical dosimetry are currently utilized for estimating absorbed radiation dose in humans. Both methods have been tested separately in several inter-laboratory comparison exercises, but a direct comparison of physical dosimetry with biological dosimetry has not been perform

Bounds on Screened Dark Energy from Near-Earth Space-Based Measurements.

We test screened dark energy with near-Earth, space-based measurements. In a post-Newtonian framework, we compute leading corrections to geodetic precession (Gravity Probe B), LAGEOS-2 pericenter advance, and the Sagnac delay in a prospective orbital configuration, yielding bounds on chameleon, symmetron, and dilaton models. LAGEOS-2 sets the strongest Earth-orbit limits on symmetron and dilaton, while a Sagnac setup at the projected sensitivity of state-of-the-art space clocks gives the tightest chameleon constraint. These results show that low-density, space-based experiments sensitively pro

Cytoplasmic male sterility and mitochondrial metabolism: evidence for low complex I contribution in male-sterile freshwater snail Physa acuta.

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is a well-known example of mitonuclear genetic conflict over sex determination in hermaphrodite plants, where mitochondrial genes maternally inherited sterilize the male function while biparental inherited nuclear genes restore it. CMS has been recently discovered in wild animals, in the freshwater snail Physa acuta. In this species, CMS is associated with two extremely divergent mitogenomes D and K compared to the classical mitogenome N. D individuals are male-steriles, while male fertility is restored in K individuals. We hypothesized that the extreme diverge

Human DHEA sulfation requires direct interaction between PAPS synthase 2 and DHEA sulfotransferase SULT2A1.

The high-energy sulfate donor 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS), generated by human PAPS synthase isoforms PAPSS1 and PAPSS2, is required for all human sulfation pathways. Sulfotransferase SULT2A1 uses PAPS for sulfation of the androgen precursor dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), thereby reducing downstream activation of DHEA to active androgens. Human PAPSS2 mutations manifest with undetectable DHEA sulfate, androgen excess, and metabolic disease, suggesting that ubiquitous PAPSS1 cannot compensate for deficient PAPSS2 in supporting DHEA sulfation. In knockdown studies in human adreno

De novo mutations in the mitochondrial ND3 gene as a cause of infantile mitochondrial encephalopathy and complex I deficiency.

Both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA mutations can cause energy generation disorders. Respiratory chain complex I deficiency is the most common energy generation disorder and a frequent cause of infantile mitochondrial encephalopathies such as Leigh's disease and lethal infantile mitochondrial disease. Most such cases have been assumed to be caused by nuclear gene defects, but recently an increasing number have been shown to be caused by mutations in the mitochondrially encoded complex I subunit genes ND4, ND5, and ND6. We report the first four cases of infantile mitochondrial encephalopathies c

Identification of a novel HNF4α agonist regulating abnormal metabolism.

Hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4α) is a key nuclear receptor involved in liver function and metabolic regulation, making it a potential therapeutic target for lipid-metabolism disorders. Combining time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer (TR-FRET) high-throughput screening with a diffusion-based structure-guided generative design workflow (DiffSBDD), we identified and prioritized a series of compounds with HNF4α agonist-like activity. Among them, (Z)-19 showed good HNF4α activation with an EC50 of 9.2 μM, outperforming the reference agonist N-trans-caffeoyltyramine (NCT; EC5

Non-canonical role of ATG4B in PRMT1-mediated DNA repair and leukemia progression.

Accumulating evidence indicates that many ATG (autophagy related) proteins perform non-canonical functions beyond their canonical roles in autophagy, particularly when they localize to subcellular compartments outside the cytoplasm. Although the autophagic functions of ATG4B (autophagy related 4B, cysteine peptidase) are well established, its potential non-canonical roles, especially under metabolic stress, remain largely unexplored. In our recent study, we show that energy deprivation induces autophagy-independent nuclear translocation of ATG4B. In the nucleus, ATG4B interacts with and cleave

Dynamics of (Poly-)Ionic Liquids in an Ion Conductive Paper-Polymer Composite Monitored by Cross Relaxation Dynamic Nuclear Polarization.

Paper-polymer composites (PPCs) are increasingly applied as sustainable ion-conducting membranes in modern energy storage systems. Their recycling, circularity, and optimization, however, require a more detailed understanding of local structures and dynamics at a molecular level influencing macroscopic properties such as stability and ion conduction. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy has evolved into a powerful tool for studying paper and cellulosic materials, but its application to PPCs, particularly in membrane technology, is still limited. This study demonstrates t

Investigation of YSO-SiPM detector response for alpha spectroscopy applications.

BACKGROUND: Alpha-particle spectroscopy is widely used in nuclear physics, radiation monitoring, safeguards, and environmental measurements. Conventional silicon detectors provide excellent spectrometric performance; however, their application in portable or harsh-environment instrumentation may be limited by mechanical fragility, radiation sensitivity, and operational constraints. Scintillator-based detectors coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) represent a promising alternative because of their compactness, robustness, and simplified integration with modern electronics. Despite the fa

High-Temperature Surface Energy and Interfacial Energy of the Molten FLiNaK-Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) System from Selected Contact Angle Measurement.

Accurate high-temperature surface and interfacial energies are essential for understanding molten salt interactions with nuclear graphite. This study examined how initial pellet geometry and temperature affect the wetting of FLiNaK on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). Sessile-drop experiment using 1.5 m chunk and 3 mm pellet showed that precursor geometry influences transient contact angles and the time required to reach a common long-time value. Capillary forces dominated, while minor gravity effects for 3 mm pellets could not be excluded. Observed variations were mainly attributed t

Steroidogenic Factor 1 in the Ventromedial Nucleus of the Hypothalamus Regulates Age-Dependent Obesity.

The ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) is important for the regulation of whole body energy homeostasis and lesions in the VMH are reported to result in massive weight gain. The nuclear receptor steroidogenic factor 1 (SF-1) is a known VMH marker as it is exclusively expressed in the VMH region of the brain. SF-1 plays a critical role not only in the development of VMH but also in its physiological functions. In this study, we generated prenatal VMH-specific SF-1 KO mice and investigated age-dependent energy homeostasis regulation by SF-1. Deletion of SF-1 in the VMH resulted in dy

Spin Teleportation via Bell-Triplet States Emergent from Proton-Proton Scattering.

Entanglement is a key resource in quantum information science, yet its properties and applications in nuclear systems remain largely unexplored. Here, using proton-proton scattering as a quantum laboratory, we report the emergence of a near-pure Bell-triplet state at a laboratory energy of 151 MeV and a center-of-mass scattering angle of 90°. In this unique kinematic regime, the scattering amplitude functions as a transition operator connecting distinct Bell states. Building upon this emergent resource, we propose a quantum teleportation protocol for proton spins, exploiting the intrinsic Hami

Dr. Sohel Khan's prechopper and prechopping technique.

The quest of every dedicated phaco surgeon is to develop skills to emulsify all forms of hard nuclei efficiently with minimal damage to the endothelium and reducing the risk of wound burn. Obtaining a pristine cornea the very next day in a hard cataract is a dream far from reality. Prechop means nuclear division without the use of phaco energy. In this article, we describe a prechopping technique using a new sickle-shaped (saber tooth curvature and tip) novel prechopper that has a slender, sleek, and elegant design well suited for nuclear disassembly. The novel prechopper has proved to be a wo

Accurate computation of quantum excited states with neural networks.

We present an algorithm to estimate the excited states of a quantum system by variational Monte Carlo, which has no free parameters and requires no orthogonalization of the states, instead transforming the problem into that of finding the ground state of an expanded system. Arbitrary observables can be calculated, including off-diagonal expectations, such as the transition dipole moment. The method works particularly well with neural network ansätze, and by combining this method with the FermiNet and Psiformer ansätze, we can accurately recover excitation energies and oscillator strengths on a

First Observation of Cyclotron Radiation from MeV-Scale e^{±} following Nuclear β Decay.

We present an apparatus for detection of cyclotron radiation yielding a frequency-based β^{±} kinetic energy determination in the 5 keV to 2.1 MeV range, characteristic of nuclear β decays. The cyclotron frequency of the radiating β particles in a magnetic field is used to determine the β energy precisely. Our work establishes the foundation to apply the cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES) technique, developed by the Project 8 Collaboration, far beyond the 18-keV tritium endpoint region. We report initial measurements of β^{-}'s from ^{6}He and β^{+}'s from ^{19}Ne decays to demon

Boron neutron capture therapy for urological cancers.

Boron neutron capture therapy is based on a nuclear reaction between the nonradioactive isotope boron-10 and either low-energy thermal neutrons or high-energy epithermal neutrons, which generate high linear energy transfer α particles and a recoiled lithium nucleus (7 Li) that selectively destroys the DNA helix in tumor cells. Boron neutron capture therapy is an emerging procedure aimed at improving the therapeutic ratio for the traditional treatment of various malignancies, which has been studied clinically in a variety of diseases, including glioblastoma, head and neck cancer, cutaneous mela

Recruitment of compensatory pathways to sustain oxidative flux with reduced carnitine palmitoyltransferase I activity characterizes inefficiency in energy metabolism in hypertrophied hearts.

BACKGROUND: Transport rates of long-chain free fatty acids into mitochondria via carnitine palmitoyltransferase I relative to overall oxidative rates in hypertrophied hearts remain poorly understood. Furthermore, the extent of glucose oxidation, despite increased glycolysis in hypertrophy, remains controversial. The present study explores potential compensatory mechanisms to sustain tricarboxylic acid cycle flux that resolve the apparent discrepancy of reduced fatty acid oxidation without increased glucose oxidation through pyruvate dehydrogenase complex in the energy-poor, hypertrophied heart
