The risk of leukaemia in young children from exposure to tritium and carbon-14 in the discharges of German nuclear power stations and in the fallout from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing.

Towards the end of 2007, the results were published from a case-control study (the "KiKK Study") of cancer in young children, diagnosed <5 y … hat the radiation doses received by young children from discharges of radioactive material from the nuclear reactors were much lower than those received from natural background radiation and far too small to be responsible for the statistical association reported in the KiKK Study. This has led to speculation that conventional radiological risk assessments have gr …

Organ and Effective Dose Assessments Using MCNP with Computational PIMAL Phantoms and Realistic Eye Model in Radiological Workplaces.

The female and male computational phantom with moving arms and legs (PIMAL) are useful models for the calculation of the effective doses to workers in radiological occupational settings. In this study, Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) Version 6.2 is used with PIMAL phantoms to simulate exposure in nuclear and medical settings. The PIMAL phantoms, defined by mathematical representation of the human body, allow for detailed assessment of equivalent dose to organs. These values are converted to effective dose (E) using sex- and age-average tissue weighting factors from ICRP Publication 103. Initial

Two-miRNA-based finger-stick assay for estimation of absorbed ionizing radiation dose.

Nuclear radiation and radioactive fallouts resulting from a nuclear weapon detonation or reactor accidents could result in injuries affecting multiple sensitive organs, defined as acute radiation syndrome (ARS). Rapid and early estimation of injuries to sensitive organs using markers of radiation response is critical for identifying individuals who could potentially exhibit ARS; however, there are currently no biodosimetry assays approved for human use. We developed a sensitive microRNA (miRNA)-based blood test for radiation dose reconstruction with ±0.5 Gy resolution at critical dose range. R

Simulation of a Nuclear Fallout Scenario in the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant During the Ukraine Conflict: Implications of Dose Rate Distributions for Downwind Populations.

INTRODUCTION: Russia's full-scale attack on Ukraine and direct targeting of power infrastructure underscores a heightened risk for nuclear reactors. This study explores the potential of a radiological release at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant amid the ongoing large-scale combat operations (LSCO), using dispersion modeling to estimate and discuss the impact on health security across the NATO alliance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The developed scenario uses the FLEXPART dispersion model to simulate the release and resultant 137Cs surface concentration. The values serve to estimate effective ra…

Atmospheric transport of radioactive debris to Norway in case of a hypothetical accident related to the recovery of the Russian submarine K-27.

The Russian nuclear submarine K-27 suffered a loss of coolant accident in 1968 and with nuclear fuel in both reactors it was scuttled in 1981 in the outer part of Stepovogo Bay located on the eastern coast of Novaya Zemlya. The inventory of spent nuclear fuel on board the submarine is of concern because it represents a potential source of radioactive contamination of the Kara Sea and a criticality accident with potential for long-range atmospheric transport of radioactive particles cannot be ruled out. To address these concerns and to provide a better basis for evaluating possible radiological

Impact of the Fukushima nuclear accident on background radiation doses measured by control dosimeters in Japan.

After the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent massive tsunami on 11 March 2011 in Japan, several reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant suffered severe damage. There was immediate participation of U.S. Navy vessels and other United States Department of Defense (DoD) teams that were already in the area at the time of the disaster or arrived shortly thereafter. The correct determination of occupational dose equivalent requires estimation of the background dose component measured by control dosimeters, which is subsequently subtracted from the total dose equivalent measured by

For evaluation of the possibility of the appearance of autoimmune thyroiditis in children and juveniles lived in the areas of Kaluga Province [correction of region] suffered from the Chernobyl accident the content of antibodies to human thyroid microsomal antigen was investigated. Percentage of positive sera varied from 4.8% to 1.2% during 6 years. There is significant difference in the frequency of the antibody appearance between persons suffered from radioactive iodine and unsuffered ones. Correlation between levels of antimicrosomal antibodies and radiation dose obtained from incorporated r

[Experience in treating the victims of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station and the immediate disease outcomes].

The paper is concerned with the results of therapy of 115 patients with acute radiation syndrome after the Chernobyl accident. The chief methods of the effective therapy of bone marrow syndrome are antimicrobial drugs and fresh donor platelet mass transfusions. Hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (allogenic bone marrow or embryonic hepatocytes) is indicated and effective in a very limited number of patients in accident irradiation. Severe beta-burns of the skin remain an unsolved problem as a result of their spreading. Organizational principles of therapy of a great number of patients with a

A statistical approach to screening isotopic signatures in monitoring for underground nuclear explosions.

The ability to differentiate between atmospheric radionuclide signatures from underground nuclear explosions (UNEs) and signals from other sources, such as medical isotope-production facilities and nuclear reactors, can be critical to the detection and monitoring of unannounced, low-yield nuclear events. Signatures having anomalously high amplitudes, compared to background levels, remain the best indicator in screening for a UNE. However, isotopic composition can further validate a suspected UNE signature, but separation from any atmospheric background composition is first necessary. To date, …

Childhood leukaemia following the Chernobyl accident: the European Childhood Leukaemia-Lymphoma Incidence Study (ECLIS).

The objective of the European Childhood Leukaemia-Lymphoma Incidence Study (ECLIS) is to investigate trends in incidence rates of childhood leukaemia and lymphoma in Europe, in relation to the exposure to radiation which resulted from the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in April 1986. In this first report, the incidence of leukaemia in children aged 0-14 is presented from cancer registries in 20 European countries for the period 1980-1988. Risk of leukaemia in 1987-1988 (8-32 months post-accident) relative to that before 1986, is compared with estimated average dose of radiation

[Exposure to radioactivity in the perinatal period following the reactor accident in Chernobyl].

After the Chernobyl nuclear accident on 26 April 1986 Europe experienced increased radioactive radiation by contamination of the atmospheric aerosol and the soil. Foods emanating radioactive radiation were ingested by the population to an increased extent via the food chain. This proportion of radioactive radiation accounted for about 80% of the total irradiation exposure and prompted us to examine mother's milk, amniotic fluid and placenta of newborn in respect of their concentrations of radionuclides I-131, Cs-134 and Cs-137. Due to the short half-life of I-131 an increased concentration of

Ecology ofAeromonas hydrophila in a South Carolina cooling reservoir.

Densities ofAeromonas hydrophila were determined monthly from December 1975 to December 1977 in a South Carolina cooling reservoir which receives heated effluent from a single nuclear production reactor. Selected water quality parameters and prevalence of red-sore disease among largemouth bass were monitored simultaneously.Higher densities ofA. hydrophila were observed in areas of the reservoir receiving effluent from the reactor. Densities ofA. hydrophila generally were heterogeneous in the water column. The sediments had lower densities ofA. hydrophila than water immediately above.A. hydroph

Identification of kinase fusion oncogenes in post-Chernobyl radiation-induced thyroid cancers.

Exposure to ionizing radiation during childhood markedly increases the risk of developing papillary thyroid cancer. We examined tissues from 26 Ukrainian patients with thyroid cancer who were younger than 10 years of age and living in contaminated areas during the time of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident. We identified nonoverlapping somatic driver mutations in all 26 cases through candidate gene assays and next-generation RNA sequencing. We found that 22 tumors harbored fusion oncogenes that arose primarily through intrachromosomal rearrangements. Altogether, 23 of the oncogenic drivers

Assessment of plutonium exposures for an epidemiological study of US nuclear workers.

An ongoing case-control study evaluating the association between workplace external radiation exposures and leukaemia mortality required an assessment of internal plutonium exposures as a potential confounder. Of the study participants, 1,092 were employed at four Department of Energy sites where plutonium-bearing materials were processed or stored. Exposures were assessed by first categorising exposure potentials based on available bioassay data, then estimating doses for workers in the highest categories using recent recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection.

Uranium deposition and retention in a USTUR whole body case.

This report describes a whole body donation from a person with a documented occupational intake of uranium. USTUR Case 1002 was an adult male who died from an acute cerebellar infarct at the age of 83. He worked as a power operator, utility operator, and metal operator for 28 years in a facility that processed and handled radioactive materials. Although he suffered a number of burns from hot metal and acids, cuts, abrasions, and puncture wounds during his many years of work, there were no corresponding health physics or medical records to indicate that these occurrences needed or required exci

Cytogenetic evaluation of occupational exposure to external gamma-rays and internal 241Am contamination.

Chromosome analyses were performed on peripheral lymphocytes from seven radiation workers exposed to external gamma-radiation within maximum annual permissible dose limits during 11 to 22 years of employment. Five years prior to blood sampling, six workers had additionally incorporated the alpha-emitting radionuclide 241Am which contributed between five to 25% of the total accumulated whole body dose in five workers and about 70% in one worker. For the radiation workers as a group, both the mean frequencies of symmetrical translocations measured by fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH)/chr
