A systematic review and meta-analysis of factors that relate to aggression perpetrated against nurses by patients/relatives or staff.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this meta-analysis was to identify the factors that related to aggression (verbal abuse or physical abuse/assault) perpetrated against the nurse or other health professionals by patients/relatives or staff. In the light of the paucity of systematic reviews on this common issue in nursing, the objective was to present a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of these papers. BACKGROUND: Aggression towards nurses is common around the world and can be the impetus for nurses leaving the profession or developing anxiety when working in particular settings

[Barriers and facilitators in the implementation of a complex intervention in a nursing home: An in-depth case study].

INTRODUCTION: The complex intervention PECAN (Participation Enabling CAre in Nursing) was developed to promote activities and participation among nursing home residents with joint contractures at organisational and resident levels. It was implemented by trained facilitators and nursing staff. In a cluster RCT, PECAN showed no effect on the primary endpoint. The cluster-wide process evaluation identified leadership behaviour and differences in the degree of implementation as possible influencing factors. This case study examines a nursing home with protocol-compliant implementation but no obser

From the field: a maternal-child health nursing competence validation model.

This group of Vermont community health nurses from different agencies collaborated to develop a competence validation framework for maternal and child health nursing in the practice areas of perinatal client teaching, breastfeeding, and prenatal, postpartum, and newborn nursing care. The framework is based on the work of Benner, using the "competent" level of nursing practice, and delineates three parameters of competence: technical skills, interpersonal skills, and critical thinking skills. Learning resource materials, including newborn and maternal assessment guidelines, were developed for e

Virginia Henderson's principles and practice of nursing applied to organ donation after brain death.

Registered nurses were some of the first nonphysician organ transplant and donation specialists in the field, both in procurement and clinical arenas. Nursing theories are abundant in the literature and in nursing curricula, but none have been applied to the donation process. Noted nursing theorist Virginia Henderson (1897-1996), often referred to as the "first lady of nursing," developed a nursing model based on activities of living. Henderson had the pioneering view that nursing stands separately from medicine and that nursing consists of more than simply following physicians' orders. Hender

Establishing Nursing-Sensitive Quality Indicators for the Central Sterile Supply Department: A Modified Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have shown that improving quality management in the central sterile supply department (CSSD) is an effective measure to control and decrease hospital-acquired infections. This study aimed to establish nursing-sensitive quality indicators for CSSD nursing in China. METHODS: We drafted nursing-sensitive quality indicators on the basis of the Structure-Process-Outcome model, and then conducted 2 rounds of consultation with experts using a modified Delphi method to determine the indicators and scientific methods of measurement. RESULTS: We identified f

Heterogeneity in Jail Nursing Medical Intake Forms: A Content Analysis.

Despite high prevalence of infectious diseases and substance use disorders in jails, there are limited guidelines for the nursing intake process in this setting. We performed a content analysis of nursing intake forms used at each of the 14 Massachusetts county jails, focusing on infectious disease and substance use disorder. Only 85% of jails offered HIV testing during nursing intake and 50% of jails offered hepatitis C testing. Preventive interventions such as vaccines or pre-exposure prophylaxis therapy were infrequently offered during nursing intake. Screening for substance use disorder wa

Using Failure Mode and Effects Analysis in Improving Nursing Blood Sampling at an International Specialized Cancer Center.

BACKGROUND: The process of blood sampling is considered one of the primary and most common nursing invasive procedures carried out daily. Any failure at any point could have a severe negative impact on patient outcomes. PURPOSE: This project aimed to assess and improve the nursing blood sampling process in a specialized cancer center using failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA). METHODS: An observational analytical design of the nursing blood sampling process using FMEA was conducted in King Hussein Cancer Center in Amman, Jordan. Seven steps were conducted, including a review of the blood

When no medication is best practice: Transforming geriatric care with nurse-led non-pharmacological interventions and care.

Since few medication alternatives exist for benzodiazepines, atypical antipsychotics, and opioids, which are associated with side effects and complications in older adults, non-pharmacologic management and preventive care processes for delirium, dementia, insomnia, and pain are crucial. Function and mobility are positively impacted by an optimal care process. Evidence-based protocols for the care of older adults provide particular recommendations for non-pharmacological interventions and care process optimization, which are largely the domain of the clinical nursing workforce. What is the nursing team involvement in maintaining and promoting the mobility of older adults in hospital? A grounded theory study.

AIMS OF THE PAPER: To present a grounded theory of the nursing team involvement in the process of maintaining and promoting the mobility of hospitalised older adults. BACKGROUND: Being able to mobilise is an important determinant of quality of life in late adulthood. However, advancing age is often accompanied by worsening mobility, which may deteriorate further as a result of illness and particularly hospitalisation. Targeted in-patient rehabilitation interventions may have the capacity to maintain and promote older adults' mobility. Some authors suggest that the nursing team may have a cent
