Child abuse education: do not overlook dental professionals.

Dental professionals are mandated by law to report suspicions of child abuse and neglect (CAN), but surveys show dentists do not fulfill their obligation to report. Even though more than 50 percent of physical abuse occurs to the head and facial area, and more than 70 percent of child abuse and neglect fatalities are caused by injuries to the head and neck, dental professionals are often overlooked in efforts to educate the public on the problem. Pre-program questionnaires completed by dental professionals attending an educational program on identifying and reporting child abuse indicated that

Two cases of sublingual hematoma as a manifestation of child abuse.

Common intraoral manifestations of child abuse include tears of the frenula, burns, and pharyngeal perforations. Sublingual hematomas can also occur as a result of trauma, but to the best of our knowledge, only 1 case has been previously described in the context of child abuse. We report 2 new cases of sublingual hematoma in infants that were the result of physical abuse. Cases of sublingual hematoma in infants and children without a clear and legitimate explanation of the cause should prompt consideration of child abuse.

Neonatal lupus with congenital atrioventricular block and myocarditis.

This is a case of a child with neonatal lupus and congenital atrioventricular (AV) block, born to a mother with asymptomatic, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The child, despite pacemaker insertion, died of septicemia and myocarditis at the age of three months. Although the association of neonatal lupus with congenital AV block is well-recognized, there are only few pathologic studies of the conduction system reported in the literature. This is such a study in which we emphasize that, due to an altered immune system in the child, septicemia may be the cause of death in some cases.

Agreement between parental perception of child weight status and actual weight status is similar across different ethnic groups in New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION Accurate parental perception of their child's weight is poor. Accuracy may be influenced by differences in ethnicity but this is currently unknown. AIM To determine whether agreement between parental perception of child weight status and actual child weight status differs according to ethnic group (NZ European, Māori, Pacific, Asian), and to investigate whether it is influenced by various demographic and behavioural factors. METHODS A total of 1093 children (4-8 years old) attended a weight screening initiative. Parents completed questionnaires on demographics, beliefs about child

Neighborhood Poverty, Family Economic Well-Being, and Child Maltreatment.

This study sought to understand the relationships between neighborhood poverty, family monetary well-being, and child maltreatment. The specific research questions were as follows: (1) Is neighborhood poverty at age 1 related to child physical abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect at age 5? (2) Are these relationships mediated by family monetary well-being? The study relied on data from three waves (child ages 1, 3, and 5) of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal birth-cohort study of 4,898 children from 20 large U.S. cities. Structural equation modeling was employed

Tough love or hostile domination? Psychological control and relational induction in cultural context.

The authors examined 2 forms of parental psychological control and how they related to child behavior problems in 2 cultural groups. A sample of 165 Hong Kong (HK) Chinese and 96 European American (EA) parents completed measures of parental control strategies, parental rejection, and child behavior problems. The use of hostile psychological control (criticism, interference, invalidation) was more strongly associated with the use of relational induction (guilt induction, shaming, reciprocity, social comparison) among EAs compared with HK parents. Psychological control was related to parental re

Defending the de dicto approach to the non-identity problem.

Is it wrong to create a blind child, for example by in vitro fertilization, if you could create a sighted child instead? Intuitively many people believe it is wrong, but this belief is difficult to justify. When there is a possibility to create and select either 'blind' or 'sighted' embryos choosing a set of 'blind' embryos seems to harm no-one since choosing 'sighted' embryos would create a different child altogether. So when the parents choose 'blind' embryos, they give some specific individual a life that is the only option for her. Because her life is worth living (as blind peoples' lives

Morphometrical analysis of retinal hemorrhages in the shaken baby syndrome.

A morphometrical analysis of retinal hemorrhages was performed in cases of physical child abuse including the shaken baby syndrome and in controls (severe head injury, intravital brain death, non-traumatic intracranial hemorrhage, SIDS including cardiopulmonary resuscitation). The extent of the retinal hemorrhages was significantly different between both groups. In all cases of physical child abuse, massive retinal hemorrhages in at least one eye could be found ranging between a maximum value of 19.2 and 73.2% of the entire retinal area. In contrast, only two cases of the control group (severe

The role of temperament by family environment interactions in child maladjustment.

In order to advance our understanding of the etiology of individual differences in child maladjustment (i.e., conduct and emotional problems), we tested hypotheses about the statistical interactions between child temperament and two aspects of the family environment: maternal negativity and positivity, and household chaos (e.g., crowding, noise, lack of routines). Mothers (n = 149) reported on their child's effortful control, negative affect, surgency, and behavioral/emotional problems. The age range of the children was 3 to 7 years old and half of the sample was girls. Observers rated materna

Epiphyseometaphyseal cupping of the distal femur with knee-flexion contracture.

An 11-year-old child with a history of receiving megadoses of vitamin A as an infant, and a 4-year-old child with a history of fulminant staphylococcal septicemia with multiple joint involvement presented with recalcitrant knee-flexion contractures. Roentgenography revealed epiphyseometaphyseal cupping (ie, epiphyseal invagination) of the distal femur. Osteotomy resulted in only temporary correction. Our experience suggests that in the skeletally immature child, skin traction, physical therapy, splinting, and, in some instances, two-pin tibial traction should be the treatments of choice.

Examining Parental Factors as Moderators Between Maltreatment and Adolescent Delinquency.

There is a well-established relationship between child maltreatment and delinquency, indicating that maltreated youth are at a heightened risk for later delinquency. However, the literature is unclear as to why some maltreated youth proceed to engage in delinquent behaviors, whereas others do not. The present study examined whether parental or family factors moderated the relation between a history of maltreatment and engagement in delinquent behavior during adolescence. Parental and family moderators included parental monitoring, parental emotional distress (depression and everyday stressors)

Child Abuse and Neglect: Do We know enough? A Cross-sectional Study of Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior of Dentists regarding Child Abuse and Neglect in Pune, India.

INTRODUCTION: Child abuse and neglect (CAN) is a significant global problem with a serious impact on the victims throughout their lives. Dentists have the unique opportunity to address this problem. However, reporting such cases has become a sensitive issue due to the uncertainty of the diagnosis. The authors are testing the knowledge of the dentists toward CAN and also trying to question the efforts of the educational institutions to improve this knowledge for the better future of the younger generation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaire data were distributed to 1,106 members regarding th

Attributions of Stability, Control and Responsibility: How Parents of Children with Intellectual Disabilities View their Child's Problematic Behaviour and Its Causes.

BACKGROUND: Children with intellectual disabilities have high rates of behaviour problems. This study explored parents' causal beliefs and attributions for general problematic child behaviour in children with different aetiologies of intellectual disabilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten parents of children with intellectual disabilities participated in interviews about their child's problematic behaviour. RESULTS: Thematic analysis using NVivo revealed that parents viewed their child's problematic behaviour not only as caused by the child's intellectual disabilities but also by other causes

Effects of a Digital Parent-Child Single-Session Growth Mindset Intervention on Adolescent Depression and Anxiety Symptoms: A Three-Arm Waitlist Randomized Controlled Trial.

Adolescent depression and anxiety are prevalent, yet brief and scalable parent-child digital interventions remain understudied. This study evaluated the effects of a digital parent-child single-session growth mindset intervention targeting beliefs about intelligence, failure, and emotion on adolescent internalizing of symptoms. In a three-arm waitlist cluster randomized controlled trial, 390 parent-child dyads from seven secondary schools in Hong Kong were assigned to a parent-child intervention group, a child-only intervention group, or a waitlist control group. Students were assessed at base

Maternal depression, maltreatment history, and child outcomes: The role of harsh parenting.

The link between maternal depression and negative child outcomes has been well-established; however, less is known regarding the impact of harsh parenting on child outcomes, especially for women living with depressive symptoms and whom also experienced child maltreatment. The purpose of this study was to examine harsh parenting practices as a mediator in this known association, in order to examine factors associated with negative child outcomes and to explore a reduction in future transmission of risk. Mediation analyses were conducted with 2 samples of mother-child dyads at separate time poin

Agreement between mothers', fathers', and children's' ratings on health-related quality of life in children born with esophageal atresia - a German cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal atresia (EA) is a rare congenital malformation, which is characterized by the discontinuity of the esophagus. We investigated the agreement between mothers', fathers', and children's' ratings on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children born with EA. We aimed to broaden the understanding of subjective experiences of HRQOL from different perspectives. We hypothesized that the agreement between mother and father ratings would be high, whereas the agreement between child and mother ratings as well as child and father ratings would show more substantial differences.

Women with phenylketonuria: successful management of pregnancy and implications.

Dietary management of five pregnancies in two women (sisters) with classical phenylketonuria (PKU) is described. One child died neonatally of congenital heart disease and one pregnancy miscarried. Of the three surviving children the only physically and mentally normal child, followed up to eight years, was born after a carefully planned pregnancy with strict dietary control preconceptually and throughout pregnancy. One pregnancy treated dietetically from six weeks gestation resulted in a child mentally normal at seven years but born with oesophageal atresia. The third surviving child is microc

Nighttime child care: inadequate sudden infant death syndrome risk factor knowledge, practice, and policies.

BACKGROUND: Millions of children in the US have parents who work alternative shifts. As a result, extended-hour and nighttime child care centers have increased in number to meet the needs of parents working nonstandard hours. Recognizing that 20% of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) occurs in child care settings and that child care providers may place infants prone, it is important to determine sleep position practices in nighttime child care centers. OBJECTIVE: To determine if nighttime child care centers 1) follow Back to Sleep recommendations; 2) are aware of the need for a safe sleep en
