The safety and value of naloxone as a therapeutic aid was demonstrated in a large population of narcotic dependent persons over a two-year period. AIMS: This study assessed the prevalence of substance use in sons and daughters of opioids addicts in Iran.
MEASUREMENTS: A confidential semistructured interview and DSM-IV criteria were used. Data were gathered from 500 subjects (225 men and 275 women). These subjects were selected randomly from sons and daughters of 500 opioids addicts (out of 1500 opioids addicts) who sought treatment in 2000.

Genome Wide Association (GWA) studies typically assess association between SNPs and a single-disease phenotype. The American Civil War resulted in massive numbers of injured and ill soldiers. Throughout the conflict, medical doctors relied on opium to treat these conditions, giving rise to claims that the injudicious use of the narcotic caused America's post-bellum opium crisis. Similar claims of medical misuse of opioids are now made as America confronts the modern narcotic crisis. A more nuanced thesis based on a broader base of Civil War era research suggests a more complex set of interacting factors that collectively contributed to America's post-war opium crisis.
