OBJECTIVES: To investigate the predictability of arch expansion using Invisalign.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-four adult white patients were selected to be part of this retrospective study. Pre- and posttreatment digital models created from an iTero scan were obtained from a single orthodontist practitioner. Digital models from Clincheck were also obtained from Align Technology. Linear values of upper and lower arch widths were measured for canines, premolars, and first molars at two different points: lingual gingival margins and cusp tips. A paired t-test was used to compare expansion plann

This case report describes the orthodontic treatment of a 31-year-old woman who had a Class II molar relationship, anterior crowding, deep overbite, maxillary dental midline deviation, vertical maxillary asymmetry, and a hyperdivergent facial pattern. The maxillary right first premolar and the left second premolar were extracted asymmetrically to correct the anterior crowding and the maxillary dental midline deviation. The maxillary molars were intruded with a midpalatal miniscrew, which helped to correct the vertical molar asymmetry and close the mandibular plane. The palatal miniscrew in the

The role of lower third molars in lower incisor crowding is a debatable topic. Some believe the presence or eruption of lower third molars is associated with the crowding of mandibular incisors, others negate such association. Thirty-two newly debonded orthodontic patients, with ages ranging from 14-19 years, were randomly selected. No retainers were used for the lower dental arch. Removal of tight interproximal contacts of the lower anterior teeth was created and maintained by periodic abrasive stripping every 2-3 months, if needed. The cases were followed up for one year. Orthopantomographs

BACKGROUND: Solitary median maxillary central incisor syndrome [SMMCI] is an extremely rare anomaly, especially when no other abnormalities are present. The defect is often found together with various nasal abnormalities and short stature with or without decreased levels of growth hormone. In more severe cases, SMMCI has been associated with holoprosencephaly, the CHARGE and the VACTERL association. Also, published sporadic cases have been related with rare variants of ectodermal dysplasia, chromosomal abnormalities, precocious puberty, hypothalamic hamartoma, congenital heart defects, physica

This case report describes the lingual orthodontic treatment of an adult patient with Angle Class I malocclusion, agenesis of mandibular right central incisor, severe overjet and deep overbite, excessive proclination of maxillary and mandibular incisors, and midline discrepancy. Because of unique presentation, symmetric extraction could not be performed in the lower arch of this 34-year-old patient. She was treated with three premolar extractions and absolute anchorage with temporary anchorage devices for maximum retraction of upper anterior teeth. To correct the midline deviation and Bolton t

Regular recall strategies ensure the general dental practitioner is ideally placed to recognize, manage and correct many occlusal problems in the mixed dentition phase. The first paper focused on recognition of normal and abnormal occlusal development, cessation of habits and correction of crossbites. This paper considers management of leeway space, highlights the importance of palpation of unerupted maxillary canines, and discusses the need for judicious removal of primary teeth (Keys 4-6).

The cause of disturbance of dentoalveolar arch formation in the front part of the maxilla in one patient was the maxillary central incisors eruption delay due to retention of supernumerary teeth situated in the region of upper central incisors. A positive result of the treatment was achieved with the use of surgical and orthodontic methods. The distinctive feature of the orthodontic method was retained tooth displacement (by traction) into the dentition.

PURPOSE: The goal is to assess long-term oral health-related quality of life in adults who had previously undergone compensatory orthodontic treatment for class III malocclusion and to identify associated factors.
METHODS: A total of 26 patients who underwent treatment by dental compensation more than 5 years ago were followed for an average of 14 years and were evaluated using cephalograms, photographs, the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-14 questionnaire, and self-perception questions on treatment stability. Poisson regression was used to analyze the association between quality of life an

BACKGROUND: The fixed "hygienic" lingual retainer (FHLiR)'s design is consistently observed as a contributing factor to plaque accumulation, possible minor undesired tooth movement, resulting in buccal bone loss, and gingival recession (GR). This case study aimed to describe the clinical outcomes of a combined periodontal treatment and periodontal plastic surgical approach for the treatment of GR in patients using FHLiR.
METHODS: This case study involves three systemically healthy, non-smoking patients with localized GRs (RT1 and/or RT2) in the mandibular central incisors associated with FHLi

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare congenital condition characterized by patients presenting with craniofacial anomalies, multiple supernumerary and impacted teeth, retained primary teeth, and delayed eruption, necessitating multi-stage and innovative treatment mechanics to facilitate tooth eruption. This case report highlights the orthodontic management of a 21-year-old female with CCD using a sequential, interdisciplinary approach including the extraction of retained primary and supernumerary teeth, and exposure, bonding, and forced eruption of impacted teeth. The latter was achieved wi

Loss of periodontal bone support was examined in 24 patients orthodontically treated for pathologic tooth migration in one jaw. Prior to orthodontic realignment of the front teeth, the patients had received periodontal treatment. Active appliance therapy was not given until inflammation was eliminated and the patients demonstrated a high level of oral hygiene. A 0.020-inch spiral wire was bonded to each adjacent realigned tooth for retention. The levels of marginal bone of the front teeth in the treated and untreated jaws were measured in percentage of "maximum bone height" on periapical radio

After a detailed historical review of implantology applied to orthodontics, and an analysis of experimental studies on orthodontic implants, the authors assess the interest of implant clinical uses as anchorage for orthodontic movement, prosthetic supports in agenetic cases or retention devices after orthodontic therapy. Different specifications and requirements are also given for a multidisciplinary approach of treatment plants.

Fiber reinforced Composite (FRC) retainers have been introduced as an aesthetic alternative to conventional metallic splints, but present high rigidity. The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate bending and fracture loads of FRC splints bonded with conventional full-coverage of the FRC with a composite compared with an experimental bonding technique with a partial (spot-) resin composite cover. Stainless steel rectangular flat, stainless steel round, and FRC retainers were tested at 0.2 and 0.3 mm deflections and at a maximum load. Both at 0.2 and 0.3 mm deflections, the lowest

OBJECTIVE: In human dental practice, intraoral scanners (IOSs) are increasingly used to evaluate the oral cavity. However, there have been no reports concerning evaluation of the canine oral cavity using IOSs in veterinary dentistry. In this case, optical impressions obtained with an IOS were used for 3-D evaluation of the orthodontic treatment outcome. Additionally, few reports have addressed the optimal orthodontic force for canine teeth. Therefore, this case explored whether sufficient tooth movement into the extraction site could be achieved with a lighter orthodontic force than previously

Because of their multifactorial etiologies, dental and skeletal open bites are among the most difficult malocclusions to treat to a successful and stable result. Etiologic factors include vertical maxillary excess, skeletal pattern, abnormalities in dental eruption, and tongue-thrust problems. The purpose of this article was to report the treatment of an adult patient with a lateral open bite and a unilateral posterior crossbite. The treatment involved nonextraction therapy, including intermaxillary elastics, to obtain dentoalveolar extrusion in the region of the lateral open bite. The treatme

AIM: To present a method for correction of an extruded maxillary second molar.
METHODS: A female patient, 16 years of age, presented with an impacted mandibular second molar and an extruded opposing maxillary second molar. After placement of appliances in the maxilla, an elastic was hooked between the distal end of the extended lingual arch and the lingual button of the maxillary second molar.
RESULTS: After sufficient intrusion of the maxillary second molar was achieved, the conventional method for traction of an impacted mandibular second molar was used. Neither root resorption nor undesir
