Apical root resorption in patients treated with comprehensive orthodontics.

External apical root resorption (EARR) is a common--but seldom extreme--consequence of orthodontic treatment. Incisors are most at risk, perhaps because of their single roots and because they typically are moved farther than other teeth. We followed a cohort of patients (n = 153) treated with comprehensive orthodontics. EARR was scored on the upper incisors with a qualitative five-grade ordinal scale. There was no EARR at the start of treatment, but most (> 80%) exhibited slight-to-moderate EARR by the end of treatment (i.e., a loss of 1-2 mm). Cases treated with premolar extractions experienc…

Osseointegration and orthodontics: modern treatment for congenitally missing teeth.

Among the goals of orthodontic therapy is the establishment of optimal facial form, occlusal function, and dental esthetics. Orthodontic treatment of patients with congenitally missing teeth, especially maxillary lateral incisors, can be accomplished best by positioning the remaining natural dentition in the anatomically correct location and closely coordinating therapy with the osseointegration team members. Special divergence of adjacent root tips is essential to provide space for the implant. The Brånemark system of implant therapy is the treatment of choice for the permanent replacement of

The emotional impact of orthognathic surgery and conventional orthodontics.

Previous research by the authors has pointed to depressive reactions among orthognathic surgery patients during the fixation-removal stage and up to 9 months later. However, less is known about emotional shifts among persons who choose to undergo conventional orthodontic treatment after considering surgical orthodontics. In the current study, a standard measure of mood states was applied to 90 surgical patients and 66 who had considered surgery but decided against it. Of these, 33 were undergoing orthodontic treatment and 33 were having no treatment. The mood scale and measures of personality …

Accelerating the Orthodontic Treatment Using Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO): A Periodontic-Orthodontic Interrelationship.

Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) is a periodontal-orthodontic interrelationship procedure that helps in accelerating orthodontic treatment by periodontal procedure reinforcement. This depends on the principle of the regional acceleratory phenomenon which involves inducing changes in the biology of periodontal tissues to fasten the orthodontic tooth movement by creating a surge in the osteopenic environment for tooth movement followed by bone deposition and mineralisation to stabilise the tooth in newly moved position. This PAOO involves the intentional creation of surgi…

Well-Being of Orthodontic Patients Wearing Orthodontic Appliances.

Background and Objectives: Orthodontic appliances may cause discomfort for patients. This could influence the person's psychological well-being. The aim of this study was to examine the psychological health of patients wearing orthodontic appliances. It is important to analyze the well-being of patients during orthodontic treatment because it is started in a young age and it may affect one's psychological health. Therefore, for doctors and patients, it is important to understand and take every aspect of the treatment into consideration when deciding when to start the treatment and what applian

Orthodontic Aligners: Current Perspectives for the Modern Orthodontic Office.

Orthodontic aligners are changing the practice of orthodontics. This system of orthodontic appliances is becoming the mainstay appliance of choice for orthodontic offices in many countries. Patient preferences and lifestyle needs have made this appliance the primary choice when seeking care. In the early days, appliances lacked the efficiency and effectiveness of traditional bracket-wire systems, but modern systems are now able to handle a more comprehensive orthodontic caseload. Current systems provide newer biomechanical strategies and artificial intelligence-driven tooth movements for bette…

Multidisciplinary orthodontic treatment in adult patients: the future of orthodontics.

There is currently great demand among adult patients for aesthetic solutions. In the great majority of cases, patients present with serious oral problems in their mouths, such as over-crowding, ageneses, edentulous spaces from old extractions, periodontal problems, etc. In the face of all these problems we need interdisciplinary strategies that will help us carry out the complex and imaginative treatments that these cases require. In this article we are going to describe the interdisciplinary treatment that we provided to two adult patients. 1--On a 25 year old male patient with significant up

Artificial Intelligence in Orthodontics: From Laboratory Benchmarks to Clinical Care.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is now used in routine orthodontic practice, not only in research, but how well it works depends heavily on the application. This narrative review synthesises peer-reviewed studies published between 2019 and early 2026 across seven task domains: cephalometric landmark detection, cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) staging, treatment-decision support for extraction and orthognathic surgery, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) segmentation, aligner monitoring, treatment-outcome prediction, and large language model (LLM) patient communication, which differ markedly i

Integration of Digital Twin Technology in Orthodontics: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital twin technology (DTT) is an emerging concept in healthcare enabling real-time patient and process simulations and predictive analytics that enhance personalized treatment and clinical decision-making. Orthodontics, being a comprehensive subject involving technicalities associated with diagnosis and treatment planning, the specific role of DTT, remains underexplored. This gap presents a crucial opportunity to harness its power to create dynamic virtual models for truly personalized and data-driven care. OBJECTIVE: The objective is to map the extent and type of evidence avai…

Temporomandibular Disorder Education Amongst Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Postgraduate Programs.

PURPOSE: The increasing prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) amongst youth highlights the importance of ensuring that pediatric dentists and orthodontists receive proper education and clinical training in TMD diagnosis and management. This study compared the extent of exposure to TMD education among pediatric dentistry and orthodontics postgraduate programs. METHODS: An electronic survey was distributed among pediatric dentistry (N = 100) and orthodontics (N = 69) program directors investigating competency, type, and number of teaching modalities, faculty expertise, practice (i.e.,…

The role of orthodontics in the management of tooth wear.

Pathological tooth wear is a dental problem that affects all age groups and appears to be increasing in prevalence. A subset of these patients may benefit from a combination of orthodontic and restorative care which will be discussed in this article. Orthodontics can help to create the necessary vertical, anterior-posterior and mesio-distal space for restorative work, reducing the need for tooth reduction and lessening the biological costs of restorative care, helping to reposition the gingival margins where this impacts upon aesthetics, as well as correcting co-existing malocclusion.

Longitudinal Microbiome Changes in Supragingival Biofilm Transcriptomes Induced by Orthodontics.

INTRODUCTION: Common oral diseases are known to be associated with dysbiotic shifts in the supragingival microbiome, yet most oral microbiome associations with clinical end points emanate from cross-sectional studies. Orthodontic treatment is an elective procedure that can be exploited to prospectively examine clinically relevant longitudinal changes in the composition and function of the supragingival microbiome. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted among 24 adolescent orthodontic patients who underwent saliva and plaque sampling and clinical examinations at time points: before
