The Effects of the PLAYTOD Program on Children's Physical Activity at Preschool Playgrounds in a Deprived Urban Area: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Interventions to improve children's physical activity in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) settings are needed. This randomized controlled trial examines the effects of a preschool-based playground program for ECEC teachers in a deprived urban area. On intervention preschools, the PLAYgrounds for TODdlers program (PLAYTOD) was performed. It focused on teacher's knowledge and skills in order to create a challenging outdoor environment in which young children (2.5 to 4 years old) are able to practice their motor skills. Observations were performed before and after the program with a modi

Assessing the Control of Preservational Environment on Taphonomic and Ecological Patterns in an Oligocene Mammal Fauna from Badlands National Park, South Dakota.

Comparisons of paleofaunas from different facies are often hampered by the uncertainty in the variation of taphonomic processes biasing the paleoecological parameters of interest. By examining the taphonomic patterns exhibited by different facies in the same stratigraphic interval and area, it is possible to quantify this variation, and assess inter-facies comparability. The fossil assemblages preserved in Badlands National Park (BNP), South Dakota, have long been a rich source for mammalian faunas of the White River Group. To investigate the influence of the variation of taphonomic bias with

The residential context of health in Australia: No longer the lucky country?

This paper introduces the special issue focused on the relationship between residence and health in Australia. We present six papers conducted in different Australian states that demonstrate different elements of the complex impact of residential context on health. Through this series of papers, we demonstrate the impact of housing quality and safety on vulnerable populations, but also the way in which processes around housing (e.g., data collection, renewal, allocation) can have either negative or positive outcomes. The broader residential context (i.e., neighborhood, community, geographic lo

Detections of Yersinia pestis East of the Known Distribution of Active Plague in the United States.

We examined fleas collected from black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) burrows from 2009 through 2011 in five national park units east of the known distribution of active plague across the northern Great Plains for the presence of Yersinia pestis. Across all national park units, Oropsylla tuberculata and Oropsylla hirsuta were the most common fleas collected from prairie dog burrows, 42.4% and 56.9%, respectively, of the 3964 fleas collected from burrow swabbing. Using a nested PCR assay, we detected 200 Y. pestis-positive fleas from 3117 assays. In total, 6.4% of assayed fleas were

An outbreak of bovine tuberculosis in a fallow deer herd (Dama dama) in Sicily.

Wild ruminants have an important role in the epidemiology of bovine tuberculosis (bTB). This study describes an outbreak of bovine tuberculosis occurring in a fallow deer herd in Sicily. In 2012 a Sicilian herd of 47 animals was referred for cachexia. Pathological examination of 2 dead animals revealed disseminated granulomas predominantly involving the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Tissue samples were submitted for histological analysis, bacteriological culture, and biomolecular assay. PCR analysis identified Mycobacterium strains. Genotyping by spoligotyping and MIRU-VNTR profiles identifie

An online tool for obesity intervention and public health.

BACKGROUND: Though the United States of America (U.S.A.) obesity rate shows signs of leveling off, rates remain high. Poor nutrition contributes to the development of obesity, and physical inactivity is an important cause of numerous diseases and directly linked to obesity. Efforts to improve diet, increase physical activity and pursue other behavioral changes seem imperative. However, the effective management of intervention strategies for large number of participants are challenging because services in primary, secondary, and tertiary cares are often under-resourced, relatively uncoordinated

The Occurrence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus Ticks Collected from Nature-Educational and Tourist Trails in the Poprad Landscape Park.

Throughout Europe, including Poland, Ixodes ricinus ticks are the main vector of numerous pathogenic agents that pose a serious threat to public health. Southern Poland attracts many tourists with its scenic landscapes and abundant recreational opportunities. These areas are ideal habitats for wild fauna, which serve as the main reservoirs and hosts for these pathogens and ticks. The large population and biodiversity of these hosts facilitate the proliferation of ticks. The aim of this study was to determine the potential exposure of humans to ticks and tick-borne pathogens such as Borrelia bu

Landscape Preferences and Leisure Constraints in Age-Friendly Community Parks.

Community parks are public spaces frequently used by older adults for outdoor physical activity. This makes age-friendly renewal increasingly important in urban planning. However, the mechanisms through which landscape characteristics influence serious leisure participation via leisure constraint negotiation remain insufficiently understood, particularly in mountainous cities. We surveyed 939 physically active older adults in 66 community parks in Chongqing, China and adopted a mixed-methods approach that reorganized the hierarchical/negotiation model by redefining the order of latent variable

Greenspace attributes influence the associations between greenspace exposure and mood among preadolescent children: A daily diary study.

Spending time in greenspace is widely recognized as beneficial for the mood of preadolescent children. However, the day-to-day associations between greenspace exposure (the amount of time spent) and mood remain unclear, particularly regarding the moderating role of greenspace attributes. This study examines the day-to-day associations between greenspace exposure and preadolescent children's mood (including happiness, anxiety, and depression) and explores how greenspace attributes (including environmental quality and safety) moderate these associations using a daily diary approach. Data were co

How Mountain Park Spatial Environments Affect Physiological and Psychological Perceptions of Young Adults Based on Real Time Sensor Monitoring.

Gathering spaces within urban parks serve as primary outdoor leisure venues, playing a critical role in facilitating social interaction and restoring the physical and mental well-being of this demographic. This study uses the example of Pipa Mountain Park in Chongqing, China to explore the psychological and physiological perceptual effects of spatial environmental characteristics on young adults in four typical gathering spaces: path platform, elevated point, viewing boundary, and key node. To this end, we employed onsite experimental methods using wearable ergonomic devices to collect partici

Spatial distribution and cluster detection of zoonotic dog endoparasites in public parks from Gran Santiago, Chile.

The interaction between dogs and humans has increased significantly. This close contact could affect people's health by transmitting zoonotic parasites present in canine stools. Parks and public squares are places of contact with these agents. In this context, this work aimed to characterize the occurrence of zoonotic risk endoparasites in canine stool collected from the main urban parks of Gran Santiago and to determine whether spatial clusters were present among the detected parasites. For this, 468 stool samples were collected from 26 urban parks, and each sample was analyzed using the modi

Urban parks and public health: A multi-scale assessment of park and Covid-19 dynamics on public health in the US.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, urban parks emerged as vital public spaces, experiencing surges in visitation as people sought safe environments for physical and mental relief. While many other social infrastructures faced sharp declines due to gathering restrictions, parks played a crucial role in supporting public health during this time of heightened need. In such a context, where public health was already under immense strain, ensuring access to health-promoting environments without introducing further risks became especially critical. This study adopts a multiscale approach, analyzing data

Assessment of potentially toxic elements in the soils of Moscow playgrounds: pollution sources and human health risks.

Playgrounds serve as the primary play areas in metropolitan areas for children - a demographic that is particularly vulnerable to environmental contaminants. Accumulation levels, spatial distribution, sources, and potential health risks to children of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in soils from 97 Moscow playgrounds were studied. Concentrations of 17 PTEs (Be, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sb, Ba, W, Pb, Bi) in bulk soil samples and PM1/PM10 fractions were determined using ICP-MS and ICP-AES. Most PTEs exceeded regional background levels. Compared to bulk samples, PTE concentr
