BACKGROUND/AIM: Parotid oncocytomas typically present as benign, unilateral, slow-growing, painless, and solitary masses that are histologically firm and multilobulated. They are often misdiagnosed as pleomorphic adenomas, hemangiomas, or other forms of oncocytosis. However, in our case, the parotid oncocytomas initially mimicked bilateral parotid gland metastasis of advanced oropharyngeal cancer. Here, we present a case of oropharyngeal cancer with bilateral parotid oncocytomas treated with chemoradiotherapy (CCRT).
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 74-year-old man with a sore throat, nec

Of 0.5% all epithelial salivary gland malignancies are oncocytic cancers, a rare kind of parotid gland cancer. Clinical signs include discomfort and swelling in the cheek region, and the facial nerve is occasionally affected, leading to unilateral facial paralysis. Currently, surgery is the preferred choice of therapy. In this paper, we aimed to provide a case of an 84-year-old male who had an oncocytic carcinoma in the right parotid gland. A heterogeneous, poorly defined hypoechogenic lesion with minor vascular proliferation was seen by Doppler ultrasonography in the superficial lobe of the r

Parotid granular cell tumor (GCT) is a very rare tumor, with only 11 previously reported cases in the English-language literature. This report describes an uncommon case of multiple GCT involving the tongue and parotid gland and provides a review of the literature. A 58-year-old woman presented with a slow-growing mass involving the parotid region, which measured 3.0 cm in diameter. In addition, during the oral exam a submucosal painless nodule was detected sited in the tongue apex. Right superficial parotidectomy with conservation of the facial nerve and excision of the tongue nodule were per

A 67-year-old man with a high position carotid plaque presented with severe pain in ipsilateral parotid region several days after carotid endarterectomy (CEA). The pain occurred at the first bite of each meal and resolved as further bite. We diagnosed the pain as first bite syndrome (FBS). FBS is infrequent but known as a complication associated with parapharyngeal space surgery. The pain is characterized by sharp pain in the parotid region associated with mastication. The cause is unclear but thought to the result from sympathetic denervation of the parotid gland, followed by parasympathetic

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: First bite syndrome is the sudden onset of acute and severe pain in the parotid region at the initiation of mastication. Although it generally lasts less than a minute, it is disabling for these individuals and leads to a fear of oral intake. It is typically seen after parapharyngeal or deep parotid space surgery. Intraparotid injection of botulinum toxin A (BTA) has been suggested as a treatment for this condition, but there is little supporting literature to this effect. The purpose of this study is to document our experience using this treatment method for first bite

Depression of facial contour after parotidectomy is still challenging to many of surgeons. A 68-year-old man presented with a 4-month history of a painless swelling in both parotid area. The mass was multiple and fixed at the parotid region. We conducted a parotid duct preserving bilateral superficial parotidectomy by one-stage operation to remove the multiple tumors. A lazy S incision was made in both preauricular area and the peripheral branches of the facial nerve were identified using surgical landmark. After dissecting the branches of the facial nerve and parotid duct, main parotid duct w

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the sites of nodal failure (NF) of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
METHODS: We reviewed the records of 165 patients with nonmetastatic NPC treated with IMRT between July 1998 and April 2011 at our institution. Recurrent nodes were delineated on imaging and coregistered with the original treatment planning computed tomography. Failures were assessed as in-field, out-field, or marginal based on the relative volumes of the recurrent nodes covered by the original dose distr

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis of the parotid gland is a rare clinical entity which causes some difficulties in diagnosis because of the similarities in presentation to that of a neoplasm. Diagnosis mainly relies in the treating physician having a high index of suspicion. The diagnosis is generally overlooked by otolaryngologists and most cases are undergoing unnecessary surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old male presented with a mass in the right parotid region. The mass had been present for one year. Physical examination revealed a mobile, non-tender mass occupying the superficial lobe of t

Warthin tumors (WTs) are the second most common salivary gland tumors, most commonly found in the tail of the parotid gland. The lymphoid components of a WT may also serve as a site for tumor-to-tumor metastasis. This report describes the metastasis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) from the preauricular region to a parotid WT. A 68-year-old male patient was admitted to the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland, with a two-year history of a growing, painless skin tumor of the right preauricular region. The patient was eligible for

Anatomical studies of the parotid gland are important for mid- and lower face filler, botulinum toxin, and thread lifting procedures. The purpose of this study was to observe the topographic anatomy of the parotid gland using cadaveric dissections. The superficial lobe of the parotid gland was studied in 30 hemisected heads. Reference lines were made on the lateral aspect of the face. A reference line (the line connecting the mandibular angle to the upper margin of the zygomatic arch, along the posterior border of the ramus) was divided into four sections (P1, P2, P3, and P4). The superior, in

UNLABELLED: Parotid abscess is a rare complication of acute parotitis in children. Acute parotitis occurs due to infection of intra-parotid or para-parotid lymph nodes or glandular parenchyma of the parotid gland which may progress to parotid abscess.
OBJECTIVES: To document the causative organism, clinical behaviour and response to treatment in paediatric parotid abscess.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was done in our tertiary rural hospital from May 2007 to May 2015 to identify and analyse paediatric parotid abscess in 80 unilateral parotitis cases.
RESULTS: 7 cases of parot

Warthin's tumor (WT) is a benign and frequent salivary gland tumor primarily affecting the parotid gland. In some cases, this tumor can involve the extra parotid region and affect cervical lymph nodes. Fine-needle aspiration can be the first step in the diagnostic approach to lymphadenopathy; however, specimens from intra-nodal WT can present a potential pitfall, leading to a misdiagnosis of metastasis. Here, we report an unusual case of a patient with bilateral WT in parotid lymph nodes misdiagnosed as metastases. In addition, we highlight the cytopathological aspects of WT to alert cytopatho

Acinic cell carcinoma of parotid gland as cause of distant metastases are rare. The patient was a 60-year-old woman who had in 1993 a acinic cell carcinoma of right parotid gland. Tumour can be resected through total parotidectomy with facial nerve anastomosis and modified radical neck dissection (T (3) N (2b) M (0)). Since the operation the patient has remained symptom-free without any sign of tumour recurrence. After 12 years the patient noted swelling in the region of sternum and biopsy was necessary. Histologically and immunohistochemically the diagnosis of distant metastase on acinic carc

Salivary gland tumours comprise one of the most complex and rare groups of heterogeneous lesions encountered in oral pathology. Large clinical and population-based epidemiological studies are inherently limited. This multicentre prospective study was conducted between 2017 and 2021 using the Polish Salivary Network Database (PSND). A dataset of 2653 cases of salivary gland tumours was analysed, focusing on the submandibular gland (n = 173), accessory parotid gland (n = 100), and parotid gland (n = 2375). Epidemiological and pathological factors were considered to identify the risk of malignanc

A 73-year-old man was presented with painless, bilateral swelling of the submandibular salivary glands and unilateral swelling of the parotid gland on the right side, and complaints of dry mouth. A parotid biopsy was taken and a serologic exam was carried out, resulting in the diagnosis of IgG4-related disease. IgG4-related disease is a rare systemic disorder that can cause symptoms in the head and neck region. Usually there are complaints of bilateral, painless swelling of the submandibular, parotid and/or lacrimal glands, with or without complaints of dryness of the mouth and eyes.

BACKGROUND: In treatment of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), human papillomavirus status (HPV) plays a crucial role. The HPV-positive subtype tends to affect younger patients and is associated with a more favorable prognosis. HPV-associated lesions have been described in the parotid gland, which is included in routine imaging for OPSCC. This work aims to explore the ability of an ML system to classify HPV status based on imaging of the parotid gland, which is routinely depicted on staging imaging.
METHODS: Using a radiomics approach, we investigate the ability of five contempora

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid is an uncommon, aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. The diagnosis is made after excluding metastasis from other sites in the head and neck or other primary malignancies of the parotid.
METHODS: Tumor registry data from 1974 to 1994 were reviewed at three University of Louisville-affiliated hospitals. Of 370 parotid tumors, 40 (11%) were initially classified as squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid. Chart review and histological specimen re-examination were conducted to confirm diagnosis.
RESULTS: Only 8 (2%) of the 370 case
