Assessment of Particle Size-Resolved Surface-Charge Density Distributions of Polymer Nanoparticles by Capillary Zone Electrophoresis.

Polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) are widely used in paints, coatings, and as drug carriers. Surface charge density (SCD) is a key performance parameter of PNPs to ensure PNP stability and adhesion to surfaces, but its detailed assessment is challenging as PNP synthesis yields intrinsically heterogeneous results, exhibiting both SCD and particle-size distributions (PSDs). We present a new method for the determination of PNP SCD distributions using capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and chemometric deconvolution. For method development, polystyrene NPs of certified size (50-350 nm) were analyzed

Coupled Transport and Reaction Modeling of Sorbent Particle Size Effects in Nonisothermal Packed-Bed CO2 Adsorption.

Recent studies have shown that solid sorbents offer a promising route for post-combustion CO2 capture. This potential remains uncertain because the influence of particle size on the capture efficiency and reactor performance has not been fully characterized. Here, we developed a two-dimensional CFD Eulerian-Eulerian model, validated it against experimental data, and applied it to simulate CO2 capture in a packed-bed reactor filled with spherical particles of 0.5, 0.8, and 1.5 mm diameter. A carbon-based sorbent impregnated with potassium carbonate (K2CO3) was chosen for this study due to its r

Scoping the applicability of the KOC concept for pesticides across soil particle size and carbon content.

Soil organic carbon (OC) is generally considered the determining soil fraction for pesticide sorption in soils. It is common practice to normalize the sorption distribution coefficient (Kd) to OC (KOC) to compare sorption across different soils. This approach ignores the potential role of mineral soil components and may lead to sorption overestimation in carbon poor soil fractions. This study investigates how OC contributes to sorption of 11 pesticides across different soil types and particle-size fractions and evaluates to what degree KOC can account for variability in sorption. Sorption affi

Projection of Target Drug Particle Size in Oral Formulations Using the Refined Developability Classification System (rDCS).

Dissolution limitations to oral absorption can occur if the time required for dissolution is longer than the transit time across the small intestine and/or if dissolution is slower than the drug's permeation through the gut wall. These limitations most often occur for poorly soluble drugs. A standard method for overcoming dissolution issues is to reduce the particle size of the (solid) drug. Building on the refined Developability Classification System (rDCS), this work establishes a novel set of equations with which the appropriate degree of particle size reduction needed to mitigate dissoluti

The effect of particle size on oral bioavailability and bioaccessibility of soil Ni from different sources.

The goal of the work was to contribute to a unified approach to assessing the risk to human health of soil ingestion, for contaminated sites with elevated [Ni]. Robust relationships between in vitro bioaccessibility and in vivo bioavailability of Ni in various soils, with mechanistic understanding, would enable site-specific assessments of human exposure through soil ingestion. Four soils (three ultramafic Brunisols with geogenic Ni and one Organic soil with anthropogenic Ni) were sieved into PS < 10 μm, 10-41 μm, 41-70 μm, 70-105 μm, 105-150 μm, and 150-250 μm, the [Ni]T for which ranged from

Influence of Particle Size and Extraction Methods on Phenolic Content and Biological Activities of Pear Pomace.

The main goal of this research was to investigate how particle size influences the characteristics of pear (Pyrus Communis L.) pomace flour and to examine the impact of different pre-treatment methods on the phenolic content and associated bioactivities. Pear pomace flour was fractionated into different particle sizes, namely 1 mm, 710 µm, 180 µm, 75 µm and 53 µm. Then two extraction methods, namely maceration with methanol and two-step extraction with hexane via Soxhlet followed by ultrasound extraction with methanol, were tested. Total phenolic and total flavonoid contents ranged from 375.0

Ageing of copper, zinc and synthetic pesticides in particle-size and chemical fractions of agricultural soils.

The transformation and mobility of heavy metals and synthetic pesticides in soil depend on ageing, involving their chemical and physical distributions among soil fractions over time. Heavy metals and synthetic pesticides often co-occur in soil, although their ageing is usually evaluated separately and in bulk soil. Here, contrasting vineyard and crop soils were spiked with copper (Cu; 700 mg kg-1) and zinc (Zn; 200 mg kg-1) a and/or synthetic pesticides (5 mg kg-1), i.e., the fungicide metalaxyl (MTY) and herbicide S-metolachlor (SMET), to evaluate within 200 days their distribution among soil

Particle size reduction along the digestive tract of fat sand rats (Psammomys obesus) fed four chenopods.

It is generally accepted that microbial digestion contributes little to digesta particle size reduction in herbivores, and that faecal particle size reflects mainly chewing efficiency, and may vary with diet. Nevertheless, a decrease in mean particle size (MPS) along the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) has been reported, especially in hindgut fermenters. However, to what degree the very fine particle fraction (non-food origin, especially microbes) affects MPS is unclear. Fat sand rats (Psammomys obesus, diurnal herbivores, n = 23, 175 ± sd 24 g) consumed one of four chenopods (natural dietary ite

Particle size and pH effects on remediation of chromite ore processing residue using calcium polysulfide (CaS5).

A long-term bench scale treatability study was performed to assess the ability to remediate chromite ore processing residue (COPR) using calcium polysulfide (CaS(5)). COPR materials were characterized with respect to particle size, pH, curing period and mineralogy. A stoichiometric ratio of sulfide species to hexavalent chromium (Cr(6+)) of 2 was used for the long-term treatment of COPR. The effectiveness of CaS(5) treatment was assessed using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP), alkaline digestion, and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analyses. Size-dependent and sex-specific negative effects of micro- and nano-sized polystyrene particles in the terrestrial invertebrate model Drosophila melanogaster.

Microplastic pollution is believed to be one of the most widespread and long-lasting changes on a global scale. Our understanding that microplastics significantly impact terrestrial systems and are a global change stressor continues to grow. In the present study, we investigated the negative effect of long-term (28 days of exposure in food) polystyrene particles of micro (1.0-1.9 µm, 0.4-0.6 µm) and nano (0.04-0.06 µm) scale, in low doses, on the fruit fly - representing a common, globally distributed terrestrial invertebrate, and a model species in many fields. Our observations involved such

Exposure to nano-size titanium dioxide causes oxidative damages in human mesothelial cells: The crystal form rather than size of particle contributes to cytotoxicity.

Exposure to nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes has been shown to cause pleural mesothelioma similar to that caused by asbestos, and has become an environmental health issue. Not only is the percutaneous absorption of nano-size titanium dioxide particles frequently considered problematic, but the possibility of absorption into the body through the pulmonary route is also a concern. Nevertheless, there are few reports of nano-size titanium dioxide particles on respiratory organ exposure and dynamics or on the mechanism of toxicity. In this study, we focused on the morphology as well as the s

Particle-size control of radionuclide enrichment and environmental risk pathways in slurry from the Wandan mud volcano.

Mud volcanism acts as a natural conduit for transporting deep geological materials, saline fluids, and naturally occurring radionuclides to the surface, potentially generating complex environmental hazards. Despite extensive research on the geochemistry of mud volcanoes, the role of particle-size-dependent processes in controlling radionuclide mobility and exposure risk remains insufficiently understood. This study presents an integrated physicochemical and radiological investigation of slurry samples collected from the Wandan mud volcano in southern Taiwan. Particle-size analysis demonstrates

Effect of Salivary Flow Rate, Particle Size, and Concentration on Sensations and Liking for Fiber-Fortified Beverages.

Xerostomia (perceived oral dryness) is a common problem in older adults, often due to hyposalivation, which can cause difficulty in eating and swallowing, resulting in insufficient dietary fiber intake. Recent work shows salivary flow rate, particle size, and concentration are major factors for particle perception in beverages. Given that disliking drives non-consumption, here we explore how particle size, concentration, and salivary flow rate may affect liking in a fiber-fortified model beverage. Beverages made with 2 particle sizes of wheat brans (D90 = 976 μm and 209 μm) in 3 concentrations

Effects of phospholipid type and particle size on lipid nanoparticle distribution in vivo and in pancreatic islets.

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have recently been used as nanocarriers in drug delivery systems for nucleic acid drugs. Their practical applications are currently primarily limited to the liver and specific organs. However, altering the type and composition ratio of phospholipids improves their distribution in organs other than the liver, such as the spleen and lungs. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of LNP components and particle size on in vivo distribution through systemic circulation to pancreatic islets to achieve better targeting of islets, which are a fundamental therapeutic target

Development of a human-size magnetic particle imaging device for sentinel lymph node biopsy of breast cancer.

In this study, a novel human-size handheld magnetic particle imaging (MPI) system was developed for the high-precision detection of sentinel lymph nodes for breast cancer. The system consisted of a highly sensitive home-made MPI detection probe, a set of concentric coils pair for spatialization, a solenoid coil for uniform excitation at 8 kHz@1.5 mT, and a full mirrored coil set positioned far away from the scanning area. The mirrored coils formed an extremely effective differential pickup structure which suppressed the system noise as high as 100 dB. The different combination of the inner and

Validation of a stereological method for estimating particle size and density from 2D projections with high accuracy.

Stereological methods for estimating the 3D particle size and density from 2D projections are essential to many research fields. These methods are, however, prone to errors arising from undetected particle profiles due to sectioning and limited resolution, known as 'lost caps'. A potential solution developed by Keiding, Jensen, and Ranek in 1972, which we refer to as the Keiding model, accounts for lost caps by quantifying the smallest detectable profile in terms of its limiting 'cap angle' (ϕ), a size-independent measure of a particle's distance from the section surface. However, this simple
