[Accurate diagnosis of Pseudomonas luteola in routine microbiology laboratory: on the occasion of two isolates].

Pseudomonas luteola which was previously known as Chryseomonas luteola; is a gram-negative, non-fermentative, aerobic, motile, non-spore-forming bacillus. It is frequently found as a saprophyte in soil, water and other damp environments and is an opportunistic pathogen in patients with underlying medical disorders or with indwelling catheters. It has been reported as an uncommon cause of bacteremia, sepsis, septic arthritis, meningitis, endocarditis, and peritonitis. Thus, early and accurate identification of this rare species is important for the treatment and also to provide information abou

In vivo bio-imaging using chlorotoxin-based conjugates.

Surgical resection remains the primary component of cancer therapy. The precision required to successfully separate cancer tissue from normal tissue relies heavily on the surgeon's ability to delineate the tumor margins. Despite recent advances in surgical guidance and monitoring systems, intra-operative identification of these margins remains imprecise and directly influences patient prognosis. If the surgeon had improved tools to distinguish these margins, tumor progression and unacceptable morbidity could be avoided. In this article, we review the history of chlorotoxin and its tumor specif

CONORM-DEID: Robustness Evaluation of a Multilingual De-Identification System for Clinical Texts.

Clinical narratives contain rich, detailed information that is essential for medical research but often locked behind privacy constraints due to the presence of personally identifiable information. To enable secondary use while protecting patient confidentiality, these texts must undergo de-identification. Because even a few missed instances can lead to disclosure, systems must achieve high recall. In this work, we present CONORM-DEID, a multilingual model for clinical text de-identification, and investigate how large-scale synthetic pre-training and the availability of human-annotated data im

First case of human spondylodiscitis due to Shewanella algae.

We present the first case of human spondylodiscitis due to Shewanella algae. Our patient did not have any predisposing factors. The portal of entry was probably a cutaneous lesion on the leg, exposed to seawater. Bacteria were isolated in pure culture from a needle biopsy specimen of the vertebral disk. Automated identification systems identified the organism as Shewanella putrefaciens. However, molecular biology identified it as S. algae. Treatment with ceftriaxone and amikacin, then ciprofloxacin successfully addressed the infection. We also review four published cases of human osteoarticula

Eye movements in neurodevelopmental disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this paper is to review the literature on eye-movement abnormalities associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. Eye-movement testing is a non-invasive quantitative approach for evaluating brain systems across the age spectrum. It thus provides a promising methodology for characterizing and documenting maturational abnormalities in brain systems associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent oculomotor studies have made significant contributions to the understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders, most notably in autism, attention-defici

Marfan syndrome-diagnosis and management.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is the most common inherited disorder of connective tissue that affects multiple organ systems. This autosomal-dominant condition has an incidence of 2-3 per 10,000 individuals. Although genetic testing is available, the diagnosis is still primarily made using the Ghent criteria. Early identification and appropriate management is critical for patients with MFS who are prone to the life-threatening cardiovascular complications of aortic dissection and rupture. Advances in the understanding of the cause of MFS, early recognition of the disorder, and subsequent institution o

Candida palmioleophila isolation in Italy from two cases of systemic infection, after a CHROMagar and Vitek system mis-identification as C. albicans.

A correct, fast, reliable identification method is pivotal in nosocomial environments to guide treatment strategies, whereas misidentification might lead to treatment failure. For routine identifications the Vitek system and CHROMagar are widely used but not always reliable, especially now with an increasing number of new emerging fungal pathogens that need careful identification. Here we describe two cases of candidemia, due to Candida palmioleophila previously misidentified as Candida albicans by using the Vitek2 system and CHROMagar. The first case is a 54-year-old man with an infected ulce

The STAR/HOP system: a newly proposed abbreviated descriptive clinical coding system for craniopharyngiomas.

Craniopharyngiomas are complex and challenging tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) which require multidisciplinary and tailored management plans. An extensive variety of clinical presentations, treatment options, and patient outcomes exists. It is crucial to accurately and effectively distinguish the clinical status and the patient's specific roadmap to ensure proper disease status identification, patient-tailored care, follow-up, doctor-doctor and doctor-patient communication, and research. The author proposes the four-tier STAR/HOP craniopharyngioma clinical coding system to facilitat

Outbreak of Human Pneumonic Plague with Dog-to-Human and Possible Human-to-Human Transmission--Colorado, June-July 2014.

On July 8, 2014, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) laboratory identified Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes plague, in a blood specimen collected from a man (patient A) hospitalized with pneumonia. The organism had been previously misidentified as Pseudomonas luteola by an automated system in the hospital laboratory. An investigation led by Tri-County Health Department (TCHD) revealed that patient A's dog had died recently with hemoptysis. Three other persons who had contact with the dog, one of whom also had contact with patient A, were ill with fever an

Trigger-Based Referral and Needs Assessment in the Intensive Care Unit: A Narrative Review and Conceptual Synthesis.

Background/Objectives: Trigger-based referral systems are widely used to identify intensive care unit (ICU) patients who may benefit from palliative care, but the extent to which trigger status corresponds to multidimensional patient and family need remains uncertain. This narrative review examines trigger-based referral, needs assessment, and integrated approaches to ICU palliative care. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and reference lists were searched, and a purposive thematic synthesis was conducted. The original identification-stage record counts were unava

[Digitalization in trauma networks : Teleconsultation, real-time situation mapping and artificial intelligence-assisted triage].

The care of severely injured patients within a trauma network requires cross-sectoral coordination from the prehospital setting through to rehabilitation. Digital applications, such as teleconsultations, real-time situational mapping and artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted decision support have the potential to accelerate information flow, enable more targeted use of resources and improve the quality of care. An analysis of the TKmed® transfer statistics at the University Medical Center Göttingen demonstrated a continuous increase in import and export volumes between 2015 and 2025. Teleconsu

A practical approach to preparing your ICU for epidemics and pandemics.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Major outbreaks of infectious diseases, including epidemics and pandemics, are increasing in scope and frequency, threatening public health and straining the capacity of health systems worldwide. High-consequence infectious diseases (HCIDs), including highly pathogenic respiratory viruses and viral hemorrhagic fevers, are both contagious and virulent, and these pathogens thus are topics of special concern for pandemic planning. RECENT FINDINGS: The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how a major disease outbreak can negatively impact all aspects of hospital functioning. Identifi

FGFR3 oncogenic activation drives oxidative metabolic reprogramming in bladder cancer: a systems metabolomics approach.

Bladder cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, impacting public health systems due to its high rate of recurrence. Metabolic alterations enable the identification of novel, needed prognostic markers and therapeutic vulnerabilities for precision oncology. Here, we use a systems metabolomics approach that integrates metabolic functional data with multi-omics, transcriptomics and metabolomics, through biostatistics and mathematical modelling to characterise metabolic rearrangements associated with FGFR3 oncogenic activation, one of the most frequent lesions in bladder cancer. An IgG autoantibody which inactivates C1-inhibitor.

Antibodies are considered to play a specific pathogenic role in certain disease states such as myasthenia gravis, Graves' disease and autoimmune haemolytic anaemia. Autoantibodies which interfere with the function of enzyme cascade systems have also been described in diseases such as acquired haemophilia (anti-factor VIII antibodies) and glomerulonephritis (C3 nephritic factor). The identification of these autoantibodies is crucial to an understanding of the aetiology of such diseases and is also of importance in revealing the inter-relationships of the immune system with other biological path

Refining High-Risk Multiple Myeloma: Advancements in Genomic, Clinical, and Prognostic Criteria.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a heterogeneous disease, with MM patients experiencing different clinical outcomes depending on the disease's biological features. Novel insights into the molecular mechanisms of MM have led to the introduction of sophisticated drugs, which dramatically improved patient treatment and survival. To date, young patients with newly diagnosed MM could experience a median overall survival (OS) of 10 years. Nevertheless, a small proportion of patients still undergoes early disease progression and death. Indeed, cases defined as ultra-high-risk MM (uHRMM) and high-risk MM (HRM

Unbiased avidity-based isolation of antigen-specific T cells.

BACKGROUND: Cancer immunotherapies have significantly improved treatment efficacy and patient survival by exploiting antigen-specific T cells to eliminate cancer cells. However, current approaches for identifying and isolating antigen-specific T cells typically require prior knowledge of target antigens, limiting discovery, and reducing the ability to consistently detect rare tumor-reactive T cells. We therefore sought to develop an unbiased platform for the identification and enrichment of antigen-specific T cells using naturally processed and presented tumor antigens. METHODS: We developed
