OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to analyze the relationship among the three electrophysiological tests and visual fields in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) in order to find some more sensitive and specific parameters in earlier and early diagnosis of patients with POAG.
METHODS: Thirty-six(70 eyes) patients with POAG, 8(12 eyes) glaucoma suspects and 30 (60 eyes) normal subjects underwent pattern electroretinogram (PERG), oscillatory potentials (OPs), pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEP) and Humphery automated perimetry tests respectively.
RESULTS: The abnormal rate of PERG was the h

In radiology and in traditional visual search tasks, the detection of a first target in an image tends to impair the detection of additional targets, a phenomenon termed satisfaction of search (SOS) or subsequent search misses. The original explanation for SOS focused on early termination of inspection after having found a first target. Tests of this hypothesis have yielded mixed results, however. Here, we developed a novel task to examine the potential role of early termination in SOS. In our "Ghosts in the Forest" task, the visual search backgrounds were contour-dense natural scene images, a

Object detection and recognition are fundamental functions that play a significant role in the success of species. Because the appearance of an object exhibits large variability, the brain has to group these different stimuli under the same object identity, a process of generalization. Does the process of generalization follow some general principles, or is it an ad hoc bag of tricks? The universal law of generalization (ULoG) provides evidence that generalization follows similar properties across a variety of species and tasks. Here, we tested the hypothesis derived from ULoG that the interna

This study explored the modulation of perceived time based on subjective visual perception, mainly focusing on object recognition. Unlike physical time, psychological time is subject to various influences, such as attention and stimulus characteristics. We conducted two experiments using images comprising dots to systematically vary stimulus clarity and visual recognizability. Experiment 1 revealed that perceived time was longer when an object was identifiable within the stimulus. Experiment 2 extended this finding by offering three response options related to object recognition and naming. Th

Fast and accurate object recognition is crucial for effective behavior in dynamic visual environments. In some cases, the visual system must overcome ambiguity in visual input during object recognition, such as when an object is partially hidden behind another. Recurrent processing between higher- and lower-order areas is thought to play a role in resolving such ambiguity, enabling the filling in of missing visual information. Here we examined this claim using a novel paradigm in which partial object images appear "occluded" by an illusory Kanizsa figure, perception of which also depends on re

In the present study, we introduce parafoveal letter confusion matrices for the Russian language, which uses the Cyrillic script. To ensure that our confusion rates reflect parafoveal processing and no other effects, we employed an adapted boundary paradigm (Rayner, 1975) that prevented the participants from directly fixating the letter stimuli. Additionally, we assessed confusability under isolated and word-like (crowded) conditions using two modern fonts, since previous research showed that letter recognition depended on crowding and font (Coates, 2015; Pelli et al., 2006). Our additional go

Previous studies have shown that attention deployment in visual search tasks is modulated by face race and emotional expression, with a search asymmetry in favor of those faces that are less efficiently discriminated and recognized at the individual level (i.e., other-race faces and angry faces). Face age is another dimension affecting how faces are remembered, as it has been widely reported that young adults show significant deficits in recognizing other-age faces. By comparing adults' search efficiency for own- and other-age faces in a visual search task in which face age was the target feat

The last two decades have established that a network of face-selective areas in the temporal lobe of macaque monkeys supports the visual processing of faces. Each area within the network contains a large fraction of face-selective cells. And each area encodes facial identity and head orientation differently. A recent brain-imaging study discovered an area outside of this network selective for naturalistic facial motion, the middle dorsal (MD) face area. This finding offers the opportunity to determine whether coding principles revealed inside the core network would generalize to face areas out

This study examines how brain damage can affect the cognitive processes that support the integration of sensory input and prior knowledge during shape perception. It is based on the first detailed study of acquired ventral simultanagnosia, which was found in a patient (M.T.) with posterior occipitotemporal lesions encompassing V4 bilaterally. Despite showing normal object recognition for single items in both accuracy and response times (RTs), and intact low-level vision assessed across an extensive battery of tests, M.T. was impaired in object identification with overlapping figures displays.

Conflicting findings have led to uncertainty about the sensitivity of eye movements to unaware memory when materials are manipulated scenes. Here, we examine several factors (e.g., task instructions, manipulation type) that may determine whether and when unaware memory-based viewing effects are evident and detected in the data. Forty-eight young adults completed two encoding blocks, an indirect test block (i.e., eye-movements used alone to examine memory), and two direct test blocks. Test scenes were new, repeated, or manipulated, with an object removed from, or added to, the picture. Three ex

Efficient written word recognition is crucial for effective reading and comprehension. However, whether deaf people recognize written words through the same psychological mechanisms as those of hearing individuals remains controversial. The present study utilized mouse-tracking technology to examine the differences in the transposed-character effect and the substituted-character effect during the recognition of four-character Chinese words between prelingually deaf adults (PDAs) and their hearing counterparts. The PDAs were found to experience greater difficulties in recognizing Chinese writte

The human ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC) has evolved into specialized regions that process specific categories, such as words, tools, and animals. The formation of these areas is driven by bottom-up visual and top-down nonvisual experiences. However, the specific mechanisms through which top-down nonvisual experiences modulate category-specific regions in the VOTC are still unknown. To address this question, we conducted a study in which participants were trained for approximately 13 h to associate three sets of novel meaningless figures with different top-down nonvisual features: the

Regions sensitive to specific object categories as well as organized spatial patterns sensitive to different features have been found across the whole ventral temporal cortex (VTC). However, it is unclear that within each object category region, how specific feature representations are organized to support object identification. Would object features, such as object parts, be represented in fine-scale spatial tuning within object category-specific regions? Here, we used high-field 7T fMRI to examine the spatial tuning to different face parts within each face-selective region. Our results show

The purpose of the present study was to explain the moderating role of rapid automatized naming (RAN) in word reading with a cusp catastrophe model. We hypothesized that increases in RAN performance speed beyond a critical point would be associated with the disruption in word reading, consistent with a "generic shutdown" hypothesis. Participants were 587 elementary schoolchildren (Grades 2-4), among whom 87 had reading comprehension difficulties per the IQ-achievement discrepancy criterion. Data were analyzed via a cusp catastrophe model derived from the nonlinear dynamics systems theory. Resu

Humans perceive illusory faces in everyday objects with a face-like configuration, an illusion known as face pareidolia. Face-selective regions in humans and monkeys, believed to underlie face perception, have been shown to respond to face pareidolia images. Here, we investigated whether pareidolia selectivity in macaque inferotemporal cortex is explained by the face-like configuration that drives the human perception of illusory faces. We found that face cells responded selectively to pareidolia images. This selectivity did not correlate with human faceness ratings and did not require the fac

Human object recognition is dependent on occipito-temporal cortex (OTC), but a complete understanding of the complex functional architecture of this area must account for how it is connected to the wider brain. Converging functional magnetic resonance imaging evidence shows that univariate responses to different categories of information (e.g., faces, bodies, and nonhuman objects) are strongly related to, and potentially shaped by, functional and structural connectivity to the wider brain. However, to date, there have been no systematic attempts to determine how distal connectivity and complex

Most written systems share basic shape features with natural objects such as line junctions, a commonality thought to be at the basis of fluent reading. Studies that compared reading acquisition for different scripts used line-based scripts and investigated them in terms of complexity, novelty, or associations of stimuli from different categories. Here, we directly compared visual Braille, a script that only includes patterns of dots and no line junctions, to Line Braille, a novel, custom-made script based on line junctions drawn between Braille dots. For four consecutive days, two groups of p

The recognition of actions presented as static photographs has been suggested to be modulated by the scene context-or image background -in which an action is presented, particularly for actions that are hard to recognize. This suggests scene context as an important feature when retrieving action representations, and poses the question whether scene context directly modulates the representational space of actions. Therefore, in this preregistered virtual reality (VR) study, we investigated in a group of N = 24 healthy participants how scene context by means of the (virtual) environment affects

Recent work has shown that people are sensitive to coarse differences in network topology, including network features like "holes," "crosses," and "T-junctions." Even children as young as 4 years old will readily distinguish between items that differ slightly in their network topology. But how robust is this sensitivity? Here, we evaluate whether people are not only sensitive to differences in the presence or absence of certain topological features, but also to their exact spatial arrangement. In a first experiment, we show that people distinguish figures which possess all the same topological

Forgetting is a core dynamic of memory which follows a rapid loss that slows into gradual decline. Notably, recent evidence suggests that selective retrieval strengthens recalled items, benefits nonretrieved ones, and reinstates the forgetting curve. A central question is whether these retrieval benefits depend on prior knowledge or reflect a domain-general mechanism. We tested 216 participants who studied high-knowledge (common) or low-knowledge (rare) Chinese characters and were assessed either directly or after a selective retrieval phase. Across conditions, retrieval boosted recall for bot
