Testing the Bivalent Fear of Evaluation Model of Social Anxiety: The Relationship between Fear of Positive Evaluation, Social Anxiety, and Perfectionism.

The Bivalent Fear of Evaluation (BFOE) model of social anxiety proposes that fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and fear of positive evaluation (FPE) play distinct roles in social anxiety. Research is however lacking in terms of how FPE is related to perfectionism and how these constructs interact to predict social anxiety. Participants were 382 individuals from the general community and included an oversampling of individuals with social anxiety. Measures of FPE, FNE, perfectionism, and social anxiety were administered. Results were mostly consistent with the predictions made by the BFOE model…

Social appearance anxiety, perfectionism, and fear of negative evaluation: distinct or shared risk factors for social anxiety and eating disorders?

Social anxiety and eating disorders are highly comorbid. Social appearance anxiety (i.e., fear of negative evaluation of one's appearance), general fear of negative evaluation, and perfectionism have each been proposed as risk factors for both social anxiety disorder and the eating disorders. However, no research to date has examined all three factors simultaneously. Using structural equation modeling in two diverse samples (N=236; N=136) we tested a model in which each of these risk factors were uniquely associated with social anxiety and eating disorder symptoms. We found support for social …

Self-oriented perfectionism and psychological well-being in medical students: cross-sectional indirect associations involving perceived cognitive flexibility and shame.

BACKGROUND: Medical students encounter sustained academic, evaluative, and emotional demands that are relevant not only to psychological symptoms but also to positive psychological functioning. The present study focused on psychological well-being to capture eudaimonic dimensions of functioning, including self-acceptance, autonomy, purpose in life, and personal growth. Guided by multidimensional perfectionism theory, self-conscious emotion theory, and cognitive-regulatory accounts of rigidity and flexibility, this cross-sectional study examined the indirect associations of self-oriented perfec…

Clinical Perfectionism in Anorexia Nervosa: Associations with Eating Disorders' Specific Symptomatology and General Psychological Symptoms in Italian Young Adult Women.

Background/Objectives: Existing literature has consistently identified perfectionism as a core feature of anorexia nervosa (AN). However, much of the research has focused primarily on its association with eating disorder-related symptoms. At the same time, less attention has been paid to understanding how perfectionism affects the overall psychological functioning of individuals with eating disorders, and in particular AN. The present study aimed at investigating the association between perfectionism and both eating disorder-specific symptomatology and general psychological symptoms in a sampl…

Young women's body image following upwards comparison to Instagram models: The role of physical appearance perfectionism and cognitive emotion regulation.

The present study examined whether trait physical appearance perfectionism moderates young women's body image following upwards appearance comparison to idealized body images on social media, and whether cognitive coping mediates the relationship between physical appearance perfectionism and resulting body image from social comparison processes. Female undergraduate students (N = 142) were randomly assigned to either 1) compare the size of their body parts to the body parts of attractive Instagram models, or 2) an appearance-neutral control condition. All participants completed measures of tra…

Perfectionism predicts disordered eating and gambling via focused self-concept among those high in erroneous beliefs about their disordered behavior.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Perfectionism, a focused self-concept, and erroneous beliefs have been implicated in the development and maintenance of various disordered behaviors. However, researchers have yet to examine how these factors combine to explain different disordered behaviors. Herein, we addressed this gap and hypothesized a moderated-mediation model whereby perfectionism fosters the development of disordered behaviors through a focused self-concept. Critically, the effect of a focused self-concept on disordered behaviors is specific to people with erroneous beliefs about their disordered b…

Enduring value of perfectionism and maturity fears for predicting eating disorder maintenance over 10-, 20-, and 30-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: The Eating Disorder Inventory provides a theoretically informed multidimensional assessment of eating disorder symptoms and associated psychological factors widely used to examine the development and maintenance of eating disorders. Yet, mixed findings for some factors raise questions about whether their prognostic value varies as a function of duration of follow-up or type of eating pathology studied. METHOD: The current study compared prognostic value of perfectionism, maturity fears, and interpersonal distrust as predictors of restrictive versus bulimic symptom patterns at 10-, …

[Relationship between two aspects of self-oriented perfectionism and self-evaluative depression: using coping styles of uncontrollable events as mediators].

Self-oriented perfectionism has two aspects: pursuing perfection simply as a goal (Personal Standard: PS) and not accepting imperfection (Concern for Mistake: CM, Doubting of Action: D). The former is said to enhance mental health, while the latter deteriorates it. The latter aspect may also have vulnerability to uncontrollable events. The present study used causal modeling to investigate the relation of these two aspects, self-evaluative depression (composed of Self-Esteem and Depression: SED), and styles of coping with uncontrollable events. A questionnaire measuring these concepts was compl…

Perfectionism as a risk factor for psychopathology in a community sample of young women: disorder-specific pathways to disordered eating or obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Perfectionism has been suggested as a risk factor relevant to multiple psychological disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders (ED). However, it remains unclear how perfectionism contributes to general and specific psychopathology. Disorder-specific processes (e.g. body dissatisfaction, responsibility) between perfectionism and subsequent symptoms may offer an explanation. The current study examined longitudinal associations between perfectionism, body dissatisfaction or responsibility, and symptoms of ED or OCD. A community sample of 499 women (18-30) compl…

Targeting Self-Oriented Perfectionism Through a School-Based CBT-Informed Program Integrating Excellencism: A Pilot Study in Final-Year High School Girls.

Adolescent academic pressures may intensify self-critical perfectionistic processes, particularly in senior-secondary cohorts navigating high-stakes transitions. Excellencism has been proposed as an alternative motivational construct, but its viability within school-based interventions remains untested. This pilot examined feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of a four-session classroom-delivered CBT-informed program augmented with excellencism principles for final-year girls (N = 80 at baseline). Linear mixed models examined self-oriented perfectionism (SOP) and excellencism a…

Within-person Relations among Paternal and Maternal Child-oriented Perfectionism, Harsh Parenting, and Child Social Anxiety: A Five-wave Prospective Study.

While extant research has well established multiple familial risk factors for child social anxiety, scarce research has examined how parental child-oriented perfectionism may contribute to children’s social anxiety. This study tracked 2228 Chinese adolescents (baseline Mage = 12.95 ± 0.79 years, 46.3% girls) with five measurements over three years. Using the Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM), results indicated that harsh fathering can predict subsequent fathers’ and mothers’ child-oriented perfectionism, but fathers’ and mothers’ child-oriented perfectionism fail to predict s…

A parental burnout modelling based on perfectionism mediated through self-compassion in parents of students suffering from specific learning behavioral disorder.

The association between parental burnout and perfectionism, and whether and to what extent it is mediated by self-compassion, in case of mothers of children with Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) were rarely investigated in the related literature. To fill the gap felt, the present study aimed at providing a model for self-compassion, parental burnout, and perfectionism. The participants were 305 mothers of children with SLD, from Hamedan province, Iran, who had been referred to the relevant treatment centers between 2020 and 2021. Selected through convenience sampling, they took part in the stu…

The cognitive engine of evaluative threat: socially prescribed perfectionism and Music Performance Anxiety-a moderated mediation analysis of rumination and self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Socially Prescribed Perfectionism (SP) is a robust risk factor for Music Performance Anxiety (MPA), yet the underlying cognitive and regulatory mechanisms remain inadequately understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to delineate these pathways by constructing a moderated mediation model, examining rumination as a cognitive mediator and Self-Compassion (SC) as a multi-stage moderator. METHODS: Data were collected from 606 university music students. Analyses were conducted using Hayes' PROCESS macro (Model 59) to test the moderated mediation, controlling for academic grade and perfo…

Predictors of Running-Related Injury Among Recreational Runners: A Prospective Cohort Study of the Role of Perfectionism, Mental Toughness, and Passion in Running.

BACKGROUND: The health benefits associated with recreational running are challenged by the occurrence of running-related injuries (RRIs). Effective preventive measures require knowledge of sport injury etiology. Psychological factors such as perfectionism, mental toughness, and passion are believed to predispose to sports injury by influencing training behaviors, motivation to run, and suppression of feelings of fatigue and pain. Yet their association with RRIs are understudied. HYPOTHESIS: Perfectionism, mental toughness, and passion predict an increased risk of RRIs in recreational runners.…

Perfectionism and Intolerance of Uncertainty are Predictors of OCD Symptoms in Children and Early Adolescents: A Prospective, Cohort, One-Year, Follow-Up Study.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive models of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) identified four types of beliefs, which would develop during childhood and play a role in the aetiology and maintenance of OCD: Inflated Responsibility, Threat Overestimation, Importance/Control of Thoughts, Perfectionism/Intolerance of Uncertainty. Whereas research produced consistent evidence in adults that these beliefs constitute vulnerability factors for OCD, no study examined whether the obsessive beliefs prospectively predict OCD symptoms over time in youth. The current study investigated the role of the obsessive belief…

The Eating Disorder Inventory-2 Perfectionism scale: factor structure and associations with dietary restraint and weight and shape concern in eating disorders.

The Eating Disorder Inventory-2 Perfectionism subscale (EDI-P) was originally construed as a unidimensional measure of perfectionism. However, research in non-clinical samples suggests that the EDI-P measures two dimensions of perfectionism: self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism. This study aimed to investigate the factor structure of the EDI-P in a transdiagnostic sample of females seeking treatment for an eating disorder, and to determine the unique association between EDI-P dimensions, weight and shape concern, and dietary restraint in anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (B…

Moderating Effect of Metacognition on the Relationship between Perfectionism, Body Image Disturbance, and Body Mass Index in Anorexia Nervosa: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite theoretical concepts about the key role of perfectionism in the formation of the symptoms of anorexia nervosa (AN), the aspects of the mutual influence between body mass index (BMI), perfectionism, and body image in patients with AN remain insufficiently studied or contradictory. Studying integrative cognitive processes, such as metacognition, may reveal new mechanisms of perfectionism's influence on the clinical manifestations of AN. AIM: The assessment of the moderating effect of metacognition on perfectionism associated with BMI and body image in patients with AN. METH…
