Errores más comunes al redactar artículos médicos originales.

One of the skills that is more in need to be strengthened in the medical area is the dissemination of knowledge. For this reason, it is necessary to provide elements that promote training in scientific writing. Identifying the most common problems when writing medical original articles for publication will provide useful resources that should contribute to the generation of knowledge. There are multiple reasons that intervene for an original article not to be accepted in a medical journal, among which failure to follow instructions for authors and methodological, design and structural problems

Prevalence of Skin and Skin-Related Diseases in the Rochester Epidemiology Project and a Comparison with Other Published Prevalence Studies.

In Olmsted County, Minn., USA, reliable, population-based epidemiologic research studies can be performed because of a unique medical records linkage system, the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP). Our objective was to summarize the epidemiologic data describing the prevalence of skin and skin-related diseases derived from the REP and to compare the findings with those from other studies worldwide. Retrospectively, we reviewed the results of population-based REP studies reporting the prevalence of skin and skin-related diseases over more than 4 decades and compared them to other published pr

[What's new in clinical dermatology?].

2013 has been the year of large genetic studies of the GWAS type (Genome wide association studies) in common diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, aimed at localization of candidate genes. It was also the year of population-based studies from huge public or private registers. Thus, epidemiologic correlations have been put forward: psoriasis and vascular risk, psoriasis and rhinosinusitis, rosacea and migraine, acne and food habits, eczema and basal-cell carcinoma, vitiligo and lower risk of skin cancer, cutaneous Ro/SS-A pos lupus and cancer, chronic eczema and calcium-channel inhl

Ocular surface flora and prophylactic antibiotics for cataract surgery in the age of antimicrobial resistance.

According to the World Health Organization alert about the antimicrobial resistance crisis released in 2015, clinicians should strongly reconsider the prolonged use of antimicrobials. In this review, we focus on the ocular surface flora with respect to the trend of fluoroquinolone resistance, and its upset and restoration after topical administration of antimicrobials and preservatives. Even 3 weeks of topical administration of levofloxacin (LVFX) yields a selection of fluoroquinolone-resistant isolates bearing genetic changes in the ocular surface flora. One month of topical prophylactic admi

Efficacy and safety of serial glycolic acid peels and a topical regimen in the treatment of recalcitrant melasma.

Melasma is a common acquired disorder of facial hyperpigmentation. In this study we investigated the efficacy and safety of a combined treatment regimen including serial glycolic acid peels, topical azelaic acid cream and adapalene gel in the treatment of recalcitrant melasma. Twenty-eight patients with recalcitrant melasma were enrolled in a prospective, randomized, controlled trial lasting 20 weeks. The patients of the group receiving chemical peels underwent serial glycolic acid peels in combination with topical azelaic acid 20% cream (b.i.d.) and adapalene 0.1% gel (q.i.d., applied at nigh

[Safety of topical tacrolimus and pimecrolimus in children with atopic dermatitis].

The use of topical immunomodulators in pediatric patients is an important topic in the clinical practice. Their prescription for chronic diseases suggests the necessity of evaluating their efficacy and safety profile in a long term period. In children they can develop systemic adverse events after their application, though sometimes they are useful to reduce the long consumption of other drugs, as topical steroids, or to have influence in the critical aspects of immunomodulation. Pimecrolimus and tacrolimus are two topical calcineurin inhibitors, from which there are several reports that suppo

[Topical agents used in the treatment of burns].

INTRODUCTION: Understanding of fluid shifts and recognition of the importance of early and appropriate fluid replacement therapy have significantly reduced mortality in the early postburn period. After the burn patient successfully passes the resuscitation period, the burn wound represents the greatest threat to survival. HISTORY: Since the dawn of civilization, man has been trying to find an agent which would help burn wounds heal, and at the same time, not harm general condition of the injured. It was not until the XX century, after the discovery of antibiotics, when this condition was fulf

Topical nadifloxacin 1% cream vs. topical erythromycin 4% gel in the treatment of mild to moderate acne.

Topical antibiotics are the mainstay of therapy in mild to moderate inflammatory acne. Topical erythromycin is one of the most common prescribed topical antibiotics. Nadifloxacin, another topical antibiotic for acne, was recently introduced into the market in our country. In this study, we compared the efficacies and safety of topical nadifloxacin 1% cream and erythromycin 4% gel in acne. A total of 86 patients with mild to moderate facial acne were randomized into two treatment groups. The efficacies of the drugs were assessed by lesion counts. An acne severity index (ASI) was also calculated

Four cases of facial discoid lupus erythematosus successfully treated with topical pimecrolimus or tacrolimus.

Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), which is a cutaneous form of lupus erythematosus (LE), is generally refractory to a wide range of topical or systemic therapies. Although the main treatment option for DLE is topical steroids, it is often ineffective or likely to produce long-term side effects. New drugs, including tacrolimus and pimecrolimus, have been developed to overcome the adverse effects of steroids and treat the lesions of DLE for a prolonged period. We herein report 4 cases of facial DLE successfully treated with therapeutic adjuvants, topical tacrolimus or pimecrolimus.

Iatrogenic Cushing syndrome due to topical corticosteroids after skin graft surgery for giant nevus: A case report.

Iatrogenic Cushing syndrome (ICS) may be caused by exposure to corticosteroid therapy. We report a case of ICS caused by topical corticosteroids applied to the skin after skin graft surgery. We presume that the development of ICS, in this case, was attributed to a combination of skin barrier disruption, usage of high-potency corticosteroids, broad application area/ large quantity of the corticosteroid, and the extended treatment period. Patients may be at risk for ICS after extensive skin graft surgery if large amounts of very potent topical corticosteroids are applied for an extended period t
