Occlusal reconstruction comprising orthodontic treatment, autotransplantation, and implant treatment was performed in a 30-year-old woman with missing maxillary anterior teeth. An initial examination revealed marked root resorption of the maxillary anterior teeth. Both the maxillary canines were missing, causing constriction of the dental arch. Conserving the right maxillary central and lateral incisors, which were dislocated due to trauma, was considered to be too difficult, and a bridge was not selected as there was insufficient load bearing capacity in the adjacent abutment teeth, making th

The goal of this study was to provide data relative to the use of a new implant system (Mac System, Cabon, Milan, Italy) with a Morse taper implant-abutment connection for single implant restorations. The implant system is composed of an endosseous screw made of commercially pure titanium grade 2, while the abutment is titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V). A total of 80 single implants were placed in 69 patients (36 women and 33 men, mean age 42 years, range 16 to 61). All patients gave their informed consent and received a thorough clinical and radiographic examination. Smokers and diabetics were exclu

INTRODUCTION: Defining the best treatment for maxillary lateral incisor agenesis is a challenge. Our aim in this study was to determine, with the evidence available in the literature, the best treatment for maxillary lateral incisor agenesis in the permanent dentition, evaluating the esthetic, occlusal (functional), and periodontal results between prosthetic replacement and orthodontic space closure.
METHODS: Electronic databases (CENTRAL, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and LILACS) were searched in September 2014 and updated in January 2015, with no restriction on language or initial date. A

Granulomatous cheilitis (GC) is an uncommon disease and the pathogenesis of GC has not been clear. Here, we present two cases of GC associated with calcium deposition caused by chronic inflammation owing to dental metal allergy and periodontitis. Histopathologically, intralymphatic histiocytosis (IH) in addition to non-caseating granulomas was seen in both cases. The results of a patch test were positive for some dental metals. Qualitative analyses by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy detected calcium from biopsy specimens. We considered that partial destruction of teeth by chronic inflamma

Periodontal disease and arthroplasty prosthesis loosening and destabilization are both associated with osteolysis, which is predominantly caused by abnormal bone resorption triggered by pro-inflammatory cytokines. Osteoclasts (OCs) are critical players in the process. Concerns regarding the long-term efficacy and side effects of current frontline therapies, however, remain. Alternative therapies are still required. The aim of this work was to investigate the involvement of Tenacissoside H (TDH) in RANKL-mediated OC differentiation, as well as inflammatory osteolysis and associated processes. I

The aim of the current study was to gather information about time and etiology of tooth loss, and to analyze the reasons for treatment needs with a questionnaire used among edentulous patients. 60 patients (age 44-98 years) who requested dental treatment were included. More than half of the patients were edentulous before the age of 60, in almost all cases the maxilla was affected first. This difference was more pronounced in women, who experienced tooth loss in the maxilla 17 years prior to the mandible. At the time of edentulism women were about ten years younger than men. According to patie

This case report describes the comprehensive treatment of generalized, advanced periodontal disease and full-mouth rehabilitation in an adult patient. Given the extensive periodontal tissue destruction, a systematic approach was needed to determine restoration possibilities and patient expectations. Subsequent oral rehabilitation was accomplished with fixed dentures in the mandible and a removable denture in the maxilla. In the maxilla, strategically important anchor teeth were replaced with implants and a palate-free horseshoe-shaped removable denture was fabricated, using telescopic crowns a

In this two-part treatment planning series, the case of a 63-year-old woman with severe attachment loss at the maxillary incisors is presented. In part 1, pretreatment strategies, eg, use of intra- and extraoral photographs, analysis of periapical radiographs, and examination of occlusal and periodontal status, are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of six treatment options using both conventional and implant therapy are presented. In part 2, the treatment selected will be revealed and the rationale governing the decision will be discussed.

The present paper describes 18 consecutively-treated non-human primates (Macaca mulatta) as part of a balanced block design study of 36 animals to examine osseointegration in root- and plate-form implants prepared by atraumatic preparation of bone. Clinical measurements around selected teeth and digital radiology were utilized to monitor periodontal disease and bone deposition around the unloaded implants. Once a month scaling procedures were utilized as a means of preventing further advance of periodontal disease. Results indicate that once-monthly regimen of scaling and root planing can prev

PATIENTS: A 56-year-old man with a left-sided cleft lip and palate was referred to our department due to mastication and speech difficulties. His existing prostheses have become unstable owing to changes in the remaining dentition over 10 years. For the fabrication of the new interim maxillofacial prostheses, a digital impression technique was selected as the conventional technique posed medical risks due to hypermobile teeth and maxillary defects. New interim maxillofacial prostheses were fabricated using a combination of the digital impression technique and a bite-seating impression, perform

BACKGROUND: Peri-implantitis is an oral inflammatory disease with increased incidence across the population as linked to the wide use of dental implants to replace missing teeth. While the recent World Workshop Classifications provided a framework for clinicians to diagnose and assess the severity of peri-implantitis, an objective assessment of the mucosal inflammatory burden around the dental implant is still lacking. Based on the periodontal epithelium surface area (PESA) and periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA) scores previously reported, a study was conducted to explore a similar appro

Patients presenting both severe maxillary atrophy and dental malposition require a multidisciplinary treatment approach to achieve optimal esthetic and functional results. This case history report demonstrates how digital treatment planning and teeth set-up can serve as a reference for surgical, orthodontic, and prosthodontic procedures, leading to an all-ceramic full-arch implant-supported fixed prosthesis.

OBJECTIVE: This clinical case describes a multidisciplinary retreatment of a patient with anterior fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) using minimally invasive restorations and a biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT).
CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: A 56-year-old female patient, treated 30 years ago with a metal-ceramic FDP due to dental agenesis, presented a misfit prosthesis at the gingival margin, black spaces, and food retention at the pontics. Notably, tooth number 2.6 was absent, and she exhibited a left crossbite. Her chief complaint was the compromised esthetics of her restorations.

Implant-prosthetic rehabilitation registers multiple variants, but their short- and long-term evolution has been a frequent concern. This study aimed to evaluate the peri-implant bone resorption at the level of the tilted implants in the SKY fast & fixed restorations, with reference to clinical and treatment parameters. An observational study was conducted on a convenience sample of patients with implant-prosthetic rehabilitation in one or both jaws, according to the SKY fast & fixed protocol (Bredent, Germany). Bone resorption was assessed on panoramic radiography. Other data were collected f

This review was undertaken to address the similarities and dissimilarities between the two disease entities of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. The overall analysis of the literature on the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontitis and peri-implantitis provided an impression that these two diseases have more similarities than differences. First, the initiation of the two diseases is dependent on the presence of a biofilm containing pathogens. While the microbiota associated with periodontitis is rich in gram-negative bacteria, a similar composition has been identified in peri-implant disea
