The latrophilins, "split-personality" receptors.

Latrophilin, a neuronal "adhesion-G protein-coupled receptor", is the major brain receptor for alpha-latrotoxin, a black widow spidertoxin which stimulates strong neuronal exocytosis in vertebrates. Latrophilin has an unusual structure consisting of two fragments that are produced by the proteolytic cleavage of the parental molecule and that behave independently in the plasma membrane. On binding an agonist, the fragments reassociate and send an intracellular signal. This signal, transduced by a heterotrimeric G protein, causes release of calcium from intracellular stores and massive release o

Link between personality and cancer.

Personality refers to an individual's enduring and pervasive personal motivation, emotion, interpersonal style, attitudes and behavior that are stable over a long time after young adulthood. In relation to the cancer trajectory, three basic and one other personality traits have been studied with some frequency, namely neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness and optimism. The considerable stability of personality over time makes it a potential long-acting etiological factor for the development of cancer. However, the studies performed so far do not give much support to personality as a cau…

Personality subtypes of suicidal adults.

Research into personality factors related to suicidality suggests substantial variability among suicide attempters. A potentially useful approach that accounts for this complexity is personality subtyping. As part of a large sample looking at personality pathology, this study used Q-factor analysis to identify subtypes of 311 adult suicide attempters using Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure-II personality profiles. Identified subtypes included internalizing, emotionally dysregulated, dependent, hostile-isolated, psychopathic, and anxious somatizing. Subtypes differed in hypothesized ways on c…

[Psychopharmacologic treatment of personality disorders].

There is only a paucity of studies concerning the pharmacological treatment of personality disorders per se. On the other hand the clinical use of medication in these conditions is quite high, although there is no effective psychopharmacological treatment of distinct personality disorders. The psychopharmacological treatment of patients suffering from a personality disorder focuses on distinct symptoms and its comorbidity. Some symptoms could also be associated with other disorders like depression or psychosis, which often makes an exact differentiation of these disorders and a personality dis…

Personality disorders and violence potential.

Violence associated with personality disorders is usually best viewed separately from psychiatric diagnosis, as a syndrome of violence rather than a syndrome of diagnosis. The authors describe eight categories of violence associated with personality disorders that may help clinicians choose treatment or management techniques: purposeful, instrumental violence; purposeful, non-instrumental violence; purposeful, targeted, defensive violence; targeted, impulsive violence; nontargeted, impulsive violence incidental to emotional escape; random but purposeful violence; violence related to perceived …

Personality and depression in women.

Personality disorders and traits should be assessed in studies concerned with the etiology and treatment of depression in women. There has been a considerable amount of research concerned with the effect of personality functioning on the etiology and treatment of depression, and much of this research has concerned personality traits and disorders for which significant gender differences and issues apply. The importance of personality functioning, and the particular relevance to women and gender-related issues, is illustrated in this paper with regard to dependent personality disorder and depen…

Personality traits in social phobia.

The purpose was to assess personality traits in subjects with a DSM-IV diagnosis of social phobia. Thirty-two subjects were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV for Axes I and II disorders (SCID I and II). Personality traits were assessed by means of the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP). Current and lifetime axis I co-morbidity was diagnosed in 28% and 53% of the subjects, respectively. In total, 59% had at least one personality disorder and 47% were diagnosed with an avoidant personality disorder. The social phobics scored significantly higher than a Swedish normati…

Psychoanalytical personality types and agoraphobia.

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between psychoanalytical personality types and agoraphobia. Thirty-two panic disorder with agoraphobia patients and 18 agoraphobia without panic disorder patients attending an inpatient 11-week behavioral-psychodynamic treatment program were assessed repeatedly from pretreatment to 2 years after the end of treatment. On personality scales measuring oral, obsessive, hysterical, and reality-weak traits, there were no differences between agoraphobic patients with and without panic disorder. The examined traits correlated across the period from…

Personality traits associated with fear.

The extent to which personality characteristics are associated with fear was investigated. The amount of fear and the attributional style of 91 college students (74 women, 17 men) were measured using the Fear Questionnaire, the Fear Survey Schedule, and the Attributional Style Questionnaire. Analysis indicated that fear was significantly correlated with the responsibility for bad outcomes and with the tendency to generalize all outcomes to many situations. Findings are consistent with the view that significantly different attributional profiles emerge as fearfulness increases.

Dimensions of multiple personality disorder.

Research on multiple personality disorder (MPD) has burgeoned, and large-scale investigations indicate that a typical MPD patient is a woman, a victim of childhood abuse (especially sexual abuse), a person whose symptoms meet criteria for other psychiatric disorders, and a person who would employ many psychological defenses. Treatment approaches have frequently included hypnotherapy, which requires skill and caution.

Multiple personality: a psychiatric misadventure.

Though multiple personality disorder has been diagnosed with increasing frequency over the past decade, its validity has been called into question. A brief review of the literature indicates a likelihood of socio-cultural influences and iatrogenicity in many if not most cases. Symptoms of multiple personality disorder parallel other psychiatric syndromes but are usually given diagnostic priority. The author has described five cases diagnosed multiple personality disorder by another health professional in which iatrogenic influences are clearly evident. All renounced both the diagnosis and the …

Microprocesses in perception and personality.

This paper utilizes an ontogenetically validated personality test, the Meta-Contrast Technique (MCT). The instrument focuses on the microdevelopment of perception (percept genesis) reflecting the process of individual adaptation to and construction of reality. Empirical evidence for the adequacy of the MCT paradigm in neuropsychological personality research is presented. In all, 45 patients were tested; thirty-three patients with various forms of supratentorial brain tumors were examined and compared with a group of 12 cerebrovascular disease (CVD) patients. Without the examiner's knowledge of…

Biology, violence, and antisocial personality.

Previous reports have examined separately the role of perinatal biology in the etiology of violent criminal behavior and the etiology of antisocial personality disorder (ASP). This paper brings together those two studies to test the hypothesis that violent behavior and ASP may result from different etiological factors. The two studies are on Danish birth cohorts, examined both for perinatal health and for violent, aggressive, and antisocial behavior later in life. Results suggest that while perinatal factors may be important in the etiology of violent criminal behavior, they do not appear to b…

[Acting out and schizoid personality].

The Authors examine the crime-symptoms, sole index of an asymptomatic clinic history, and make some remarks on the indexes of social dangerousness. By this point of view, the structural traits of pre and post-critic personality seem to be a first predictory index. In relation to this question the Authors make mention to schizoidia.

[Personality disorders related to schizophrenia].

Personality disorders related to schizophrenia were described since Kraepelin's works. According to the DMS III-R those disorders are gathered into the A cluster of personality disorders consisting in: schizotypal, schizoid and paranoid personality disorders. Schizotypal and paranoid personalities are biologically linked to schizophrenia and support the concept of "schizophrenia spectrum". Until now such a link is not found between schizoid personality and schizophrenia. Future research in the field of those personality disorders will bring a better knowledge in the pathogenesis of schizophren…

[Personality characteristics of hypertensive patients].

Essential hypertension, as well-known specialists believe, is due both to genetic and external environment factors. Apart from the steadily growing complexity of social life and various important life events, high-risk factors may also be seen in a certain way of behaviour and man's psychophysiological reactivity. Recent literature on this topic informs about some common characteristics found in the behaviour of hypertensive persons, for example: anxiety in social contacts, suppressed hostility, manifestations of perfectionism, suppression of emotions, exaggerated behavioral adaptability and d

Personality factors and pathological gambling.

Pathological gambling is a disorder in which personality factors are thought to be important. Therefore, we compared 19 male pathological gamblers with 18 male normal controls for their scores on 3 personality questionnaires. Pathological gamblers were found to have significantly higher psychoticism and neuroticism scores on the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire than controls. Gamblers also had significantly higher total hostility scores on the Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire. The possible implications of these findings are discussed.
